Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Lethargic Great run, 15min PB, half splits of 75 + 79, dropping off not as bad as previous 26.2. With the Champs start got into a good pace quicker, and actually saw more of the course than last year. Highlights, running around Cutty Sark with two other runners, no one else around, and also going over Tower Bridge with a club mate who I followed for most of the race and another local runner. Enjoyed this years race than last years damp and cold run, the crowds much bigger, and cheering everywhere.

milemonster Race number: 620. Championship position application form sent mid October. Can't wait for the acknowledgment form which will be returned in the stamped addressed envelope. This will be my 4th Marathon. Done London in April 2007 (3h 1m) , Blackpool in April 2008 (2h 35m), Angelsey in Sept 2008 (2h 47 (Hilly!)) and now, hopefully 2h 34m for London April 2009.
I am pleased but disappointed at the same time. Basically I got to 20 miles in 1h59 and thought that was too fast and might blow up if I didn't slow down. So I slowed a little and when I got to 25 miles I felt OK (tied but OK); it was too late then to do anything; I should have kept it strong back at 20miles. I think also at the 20mile mark the sun was out so I felt a little heat exhaustion.

tom_craggs Missed out on going under 3 at Berlin by a minute...not this time.**Update** Well that was tough going. I wanted sub 2.50 an felt good passing through halfway dead on time but really struggled to hydrate myself and felt the heat badly in the second half. Took on a bit too much water and a few too many gels and felt very ill. So overall still satisfied with sub 2.55 and GFA. Well done everybody, good running on a challenging day.

clairevmc Watch time for now. So pleased with a 22 min PB!! Really struggled in this one though, was half a minute down on my intended time at half way and slowed - legs feeling like lead from about mile 20 onwards. Managed to keep the pace for sub3 til about 24 miles and it was then all I could do to keep running. So upset not to have got sub3 but it was an outside chance and I'm pleased to say I didn't blow the whole thing by my gamble to go off at 6.45min/mile pace. Championship Start added to the day but I won't be running London again.

Should be my 2nd crack at 26.2m distance, looking to avoid cramp in the last couple miles & shave 5 to 10min off p/b depending how crowded the course is. 20/4/09 then again maybe not picked a slight niggle.

skoorb Poorly run first marathon, bad pacing as I actually went for 3 hours as golden time and 3.15 as worse case scenario. Maintained 6.52 m/m until 14 when it started to slip, pushed on when I should have cut right back, let HR come down and then run at adjusted pace. Cramp over last 6 miles meant lots of stopping to stretch and a poorly set up Garmin saw me miss GFA by one minute !

I'll be back to lay the demons to rest

ding_dong Fantastic event with an elecrifying atmosphere. Felt like I ran a good race with the second half nearly as fast as the first (1:39:36 followed by 1:40:04) but I probably started too far back as I was moving up the field throughout and my pace was quite badly hampered in the early miles. Even at the halfway point I was still having to weave and dodge to overtake. Mile times (as best I could take them):

(1) 08:33, (2) 08:04, (3) 7:30, (4) 7:22, (5) 7:19, (6) 7:43, (7) 7:36, (8) 7:19, (9) 7:34, (10) 7:32, (11) 7:22, (12) 7:24, (13) 7:27, (14) 7:25, (15) 7:18, (16) 7:19, (17) 7:33, (18) 7:21, (19 & 20) 15:35, (21) 7:58, (22) 7:31, (23) 7:46, (24) 7:39, (25) 8:09, (26) 7:39

podrunner What an amazing day! unbelievable experience. Right itb started at 14 miles and peaked at about 18 but didn't get any worse and nothing was going to stop me finishing. First 3-4 miles a bit slow due to the crowds but this helped me finish very strong. Even managed a negative split. Support was fantastic probably due to the nice weather. Might even do another one now????

Went of to quick for the conditions, should have been doing 8mm in that heat and gone for a 3:30 instead of 3:15. Still you live and learn!

Was 5 mins down in 5 miles and knew any attempt to get that back would be suicidal .....Found it hard from 21 miles on and had to take a walk at 24 miles but got back into it again -too busy , too warm and too hard !! Ticker It was hot and far too crowded for the first 20K despite starting in pen 5 (out of 1 to 9), we were walking for the first 2 miles. I managed to claw some back in the second half and finished 3:45. It was wonderful, the support was fantastic. Even around docklands there were people everywhere; cheering and whistling. I didn't want it to end. I loved it!

Run/walked second half averaging 10mm... only the thought of my sponsors got me round and the people waiting on embankment.

Rapid Snail Loved every minute. Had pretty even splits (01:58:40 and 01:59:32) and managed a good finish despite a bit of cramp at 22 miles. The crowds were extraordinary..nothing could have prepared me for the amount of support out there. Had a couple of blips in training but am now convinced after following Hal Higdon's Int II plan that there is no need to run further than 20 miles in training.

Bob! Trod on a water bottle at about mile 5 and turned the ankle, had a shooting pain a few times in the achilles area, and was worried about making it round

Struggled from mile 15, but kept going at about 9.30 pace cos I could see that a sub 4 was on the cards. The positive half of my brain wan the battle against the other half trying to get me to stop!

RogerB Preparation confounded by a niggle picked up in hilly Sydney the week before the race. Seriously considered pulling out on Saturday. Right calf in pain as soon as I started and never eased off. Finally went ping properly after 24 miles.

Simon L Ran steady to half way. 1 hour 50mins. Started to feel lack of energy. Guess due to heat. Got cramps above knees at 19 miles. Never had that before. Nursed home with regular stops. Disappointed with over 4 hours. Must do another one make myself feel better.

Sorry to those who bet on me. I had a mare of a race - half-way in 1:39 (good), hamsting cramp at 14 miles, race over by 15 miles. Ran on slowly to 19 mile where family was waiting, then really struggled to the end.

MadJonny Fantastic run under the circumstances. Realised early on I wouldn't get under 4hrs due to heat, but felt good most of the way and only really tired in the last six miles. Managed to keep a constant pace of around 30 min per 5k and only 43 secs slower in second half of race. Beat previous PB by 21 seconds.

Laudy It is with trepidation that I have added this to my portfolio, as a cursory glance at my recent races entered shows a distinct lack of finishing times, inlcuding the Berlin and Frankfurt marathons. I've managed two 10ks in the last 18 months, but providing the second op (to remove some of the metalwork from the first) goes well in a couple of weeks, I'll be at the start in April - fit(ish) and raring to go.

ninemins Hope to beat the just sub 4:00:00 Robin Hood time. maybe even 3:45:00 - Well I was gutted with 4:45:10 but reading all the other reference to cramp and feeling wacked at 18 and that is what happened to me to. I spotted a short loo queue in the shade @18 and that settled my stomach and a quick stretch impoved my calf. But all the early stop starting and painfully slow bits meant I was not on to even match my PB.

Glad I eased right off and survived without any serious damage - never seen so many poor folk being attended to by St John's - quite a few being helped by other runners etc.

Not sure quite how to train for the conditions because I have never run it that that before!

Amazing experience with great organisation.

Bintmcskint Got my place through a charity. Desperate to do under four hours and, with a year to prepare, might just manage it. Also currently training for my first triathlon (September of this year) so won't start dedicated marathon training until October. Really looking forward to the race.
Update 08/04/09 - still going to run but carrying two maltracking patellas. It will be both painful and slow but am determined to get round. No 4 hours for me this time. Will be happy with less than 5.
Update 27/04/09 - I did it! Barely ran at all in the 2 months previous due to knee pain. Physio helped a bit but in the end I broke 5 hours and am pleased with myself. Want to do it again now!

Nic.1 Very Hot. Just completed my 14th London the hardest yet and slowest. Struggled with the amount of people that just stopped at water stations from 17 miles to 23 then it became easier again. Next year will be the 30th anniversary and as my husband and I ran the first in 1981 we are hoping we will both get in next year. What do you think.

I'm in on a charity place and besides myself with excitement. I shall enjoy this as much as I enjoyed my first ever marathon.

As I invented Fetchpoint (and then Stumpy did all the work making it happen) and have spent the last 4 years supporting at London, it will be lovely to be on the receiving end at FLM.

Enjoyed the day - was too hot for my liking as had not trained in hot weather (blame Bristish weather!)

Felt sick and dizzy at mile 12, which affected the remaining of race.

Burto Consistent pace from start until halfway - legs turned to jelly at Tower Bridge. Walked/hobbled the second half. Fair to say I underestimated the training quite significantly...

Spotty Dog Was going ok up until 13 miles when the old runners knee raised its ugly head, run/walked up to 21 miles when my knee went completely and I had to hobble the rest of the way (apart from the obligatory jog over the line).

Despite an awful time, had a cracking time in the sun and in complete agony.... :o)
