DESIGNS REVEALED: Fetch 20th anniversary shirts and vests
2:32pm, 27 Aug 2024
After a lot of effort by our designers, and some to-ing and fro-ing between me and various kit manufacturers, I am very pleased/petrified to share the pre-order link for our 20th anniversary shirts and vests!
Long-standing Fetchies phal and Sombrero submitted two excellent designs:
phal's design features a signpost, to illustrate our journey over the last 20 years. And the shirt itself has lots of tiny Fetch nicknames all over it. We've tried to make the nicknames large enough to be legible, but small enough that if your first appearance is in an armpit, you've got a good chance of appearing somewhere else too
Sombrero's design features his wonderful linocut prints, showing runners, swimmers, cyclists and walkers. And we've used different colour combos to create a Warhol-style montage to represent the diversity and inclusion that makes our community a nice place to be.
I've kept the prices the same as when I last did a batch of shirts a year or so ago. Inflation can go do one. And I'll donate £2 from each purchase to the relevant artist.
If it's ok with you, I will leave the pre-order open until I come back from my holiday (see previous blog). As soon as I'm back, I can place the order with the manufacturer, and they will have the kit with me by mid- to late-October. A big day of packing and labelling, and I'll get the stuff in the post to you ASAP.
As always, if you want some kit but don't have the cash until payday or something, please put your order in anyway. I know you're good for it.

Back in 2020, Katie and I had saved up enough money to book ourselves on a nice two week trip to Egypt. I hadn't been on a two week holiday since I was a teenager, so it felt like a real extravagance. Then, for reasons I can't really recall, the holiday was cancelled. Something about a global virus, and it being much better if we stayed home. TUI need to switch to Linux obviously.
Then in 2023, Katie and I were all set to go to India for two weeks, with a plan to take a train ride down the west coast, and see some of the countryside. Then on our trip to North Wales, the car ate its own insides: fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2023/7/469726 and we had to spend about seven grand getting the engine repaired (either that or sell it for a pittance as scrap and start again). Of course a few months later, the car then drowned in flood water, and was completely written off. No holiday for us.
So with no small amount of trepidation, with the help of a flood contents insurance payment, and a bit of inheritance money from Katie's dad and stepmum, we are trying again. We are hoping beyond hope that tomorrow we will go to a Premier Inn in Reigate (it gets better, I promise), and then on Thursday morning, fly to Jamaica for two weeks in the sun. My boy and Katie's youngest are joining us.
I will take my laptop - I always do - so that if there are any major site issues I can get straight on it. There's usually at least one crisis any time I go away But I'll just be happy to be there.

Hope you had a fabulous trip, we had a brilliant 2 weeks in Jamaica a few years ago. We found warm sunshine, lovely people and a relaxed culture. My only advice is if you're being driven anywhere in anything other tan a large coach/tank - keep your eyes closed as they didn't seem to have agreed on which side of the road to drive. Have a lovely holidayLisrun2:06pm, 3rd Sep 2024
I had an email from northernslowcoach telling me to expect a parcel today! Inside was this lovely bucket hat It has the Fetch logo on one side, and on the other side it says "a trundle across the moors".
A bunch of Fetchies are running the Yorkshireman half this year, and decided to get some bucket hats to commemorate Swittle's unique outlook on distance running. I said I'd like to buy a hat too, but coachy refused payment.
Also inside the box were some lovely mugs and a drinks bottle with Fetch branding - definitely some options for doing some anniversary mugs later on this year.
I was given an option of either S/M or M/L - I went for the larger size, as I've got an absolute unit of a head. I wasn't expecting it to fit, but it does! It's a good job I've had my hair cut this week though, as there's not much room to spare!
Thank you coachy, and to all of you who keep the spirit of the site alive. By coincidence, today I paid for the memorial bench that we've arranged for Swittle. Donations from Fetchies have already covered the cost and then some!

Thanks for all the encouraging comments on my previous blog. The boy fell short of the grades required for his first choice (Sheffield), but did enough to be accepted by his second choice (Sheffield Hallam). After some initial disappointment, he's started looking forward to student life. It's a very exciting time.
There has also been some progress with The Flood House - it's now just over 300 days (or 7.5 Noahs) since the downstairs was host to two feet of water. And there's been very little tangible progress - until this week. The artex on the walls and ceilings all contained asbestos - so it had to be tested and then removed by a specialist company.
Here's the front room - they've taken it back to bare walls - and exposed the laths on the ceiling. They stopped using laths with the introduction of plasterboard midway through the 20th century - so they've been up there a while. Hopefully these will disappear too, but the asbestos company would have seen it as beyond their remit.
Happily for me, the artex clearance extends all the way up the stairs - so all the horrible textured coatings are now gone:
And here's the back room - similar story. There were fake exposed beams in this back room, but these have all been removed too. I'm pretty glad about that - I wasn't mad keen on them either.
Finally, here's a close up of some very suspect wiring in the front room. You can see two channels leading up from the socket, running at about 15 degrees off vertical. I'm not a qualified electrician, but whoever put these in was clearly an absolute psychopath. Luckily, they are defunct. They used to feed some switches under the stairs that controlled the old boiler - but that was decommissioned at least five years ago.
Luckily for the boy and me, we've been in a nice rental house since mid December. And it's no bad thing that the flood house will not be habitable before he goes to Sheffield - it means far less upheaval for him (and me) if he can go straight to university without another house move to contend with in the middle of it all.
You'll have to please forgive me if I seem a bit distracted over the next month. The flood house will progress in its own sweet way - I'm sure of that. And the boy will fly the nest in mid-September, which I'm both very excited for, and a bit sad about. But mostly excited and hopeful, to see how things develop for him. Before that, we have a lovely holiday planned (the sort of holiday we've been hoping to have for at least five years) with me, the boy, Katie and her youngest - more on that in a forthcoming blog I reckon

Good luck with the University - my eldest is also starting this time. He's still my little boy..Mushroom
My friend was flooded in Carlisle (back in 2005 I think?). It took them the best part of a year to get back in - which sounds like you might be similar. Hope that goes well for you too. The electricians changed the cabling - to be ceiling down, rather than a floor up - as much of the old UK houses tend to be - so possible future proofing 'should' there be any future water ingress.2:29pm, 20th Aug 2024 -

Blimey I was only thinking about Your flood house the other day and wondered if you back in. Clearly not!!runningmumof3boys11:42pm, 31st Aug 2024
I am laughed at in my house for pronouncing it 'UC-ASS' instead of 'U-CASS'. But back in my day, it was a new organisation, created by the union between PCAS and UCCA. And that's how Mr Bradley, our head of sixth form, used to pronounce it. And he was a legend.
Katie and I are driving up to Derbyshire in a bit, so we can be with my boy when he gets his results first thing tomorrow morning. He is hoping to get the grades he needs to do a journalism degree.
I have *everything* crossed. Good luck to students, and parents of students over the next 24 hours.

Here's the final tea towel:
I will accept avatar changes over the next few days - but ONLY if you let me know.
I have filled the bottom row with lost Fetchies - not enough spaces for all of them unfortunately, but I have done my best to pick out those that played the biggest part in our community.
It would be lovely if you could fill in your pre-order - I'm assuming only those who are on the towel will want one BUT everyone is welcome.
Here's the link: fetcheveryone.com/shop-preorder-teatowel.php
Thank you everyone for turning an idea into reality

The other day we were looking at old tea towels that Katie's boys got when they were at nursery/infant school. Each one featured self-drawn pics of all the kids in the class. Very cute - especially the kid who looked indistinguishable from an angry cookie on fire
I wondered if it'd be good to make a commemorative tea towel to celebrate 20 years of Fetcheveryone (alongside the shirts and vests I have planned).
I've made a very simple design, with spaces for those of you who would like to join in.
The idea is that if you want a tea towel, leave a comment - and I'll build it using your avatars and names. I've added Katie and me as examples - and the finished product will be way more colourful once all your various avatars are added.
I've had a quote for £5.56+VAT (£6.67) for each tea towel - so I was thinking that once I add postal costs on top of that, a price of £16 (including p&p to the UK) for the tea towel sounds about right in terms of raising a few quid for the Fetch hamsters.
The number of spaces on the tea towel is obviously limited, so if you want one, please leave a comment and I'll add you to the grid. And be sure that your avatar is up to date

Yeah, I'd buy one of these Fetch. You probably can accommodate more names by just doing a second and third and so on version? Unless you *want* to make it a coveted place and get people to bid £millions for inclusion?! GHappyG(rrr)9:20am, 9th Aug 2024

Sorry, I haven't read all the comments but if nobody has said it would it be possible to include the Fetchies we lost this year? I guess there might be permission issues thereRunningbauble219:40am, 9th Aug 2024

I am working through the requests - I've got as far as compartmental, and am adding them in order received. Just uploading whilst I have a break from doing it Regarding avatars - as you can see I'm adding them right now - so if you are planning on changing your avatar for this, get on it sharphish AND LET ME KNOW. But you look lovely as you are, honest.fetcheveryone
I have held back from adding other halves for now (even though initially I was adding them) - my hope is to sell one towel per avatar - but let's see how we do for space.
As for mugs - I'd love to - maybe with the same or similar design - but I'll stick with one thing at a time.10:26am, 9th Aug 2024 -

You'll be pleased to hear that the itchy legs that I've had since running through the wheat field on Sunday morning are almost back to normal (I hope). They itched like heck at night, and there was quite a bit of inflammation. Not pleasant really - I'm in no hurry to repeat the experience
I've made some updates to the virtual orienteering game that I announced last week. If you go run a course, it will track your attempt, you'll get a notification showing you how you did, and there are leaderboards for each course. The game now has a permanent place in the site menu at Games > Orienteering.
Most exciting of all, I've just added some new badges for you all to collect. There's one for designing a course - you can do that one without even standing up. Then there's one for collecting all the flags on (any) course. Another for collecting all the flags on *someone else's* course. And a slightly more hardcore one for completing any five courses.
I've also updated the 'Game Guide' - there's a link to that in the header of the main orienteering page:
fetcheveryone.com/ori.php
(probably a good idea to at least skim read that to get a grip on the rules).
I've also been enjoying some potatoes that Katie dug up from the garden. 200C for 12 minutes in the air fryer, with a few squirts of fry-light, some salt and pepper, and some chilli powder and paprika. The mayonnaise was a good choice because I put a bit too much chilli powder on

Hello mate. I fed your back but I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do. I’ve cocked up a wee route and can’t make any alterations now it’s public.Angus Clydesdale5:54pm, 9th Aug 2024
I remembered one thing about my 'pilgrimage' run in Wales. You'll know from the blog that I bailed out after reaching the back of my childhood home, and headed for the station. Unbeknown to me, Dad was about 200 yards further down the road, standing outside Aldi in Tir-y-berth, waiting to take my picture and cheer me on. Lovely nutcase
I had a good week of running, after waiting until Thursday to get going I'm attempting the '100 miles a month in 2024' challenge (see fetcheveryone.com/forum/100-miles-a-month-in-2024-62881/ ), and as I'd ticked off July last Sunday, I wanted to keep my powder dry until we reached August 1st. Side note: there are 323 people still in contention here: fetcheveryone.com/league-centurions.php
Thursday was a fairly bog standard nine miles. My left achilles has a bit of an ache to it at the moment - but over the course of this year I've had so many issues in so many different parts of my legs that I *think* I know when it's ok to run through it [aka 'Shut up Legs!'], and when I need to take a few days off. My calves were both a bit tight when I woke up on Friday, so I had the day off running.
On Saturday, we were all up early as Katie's youngest was heading back for his final year at university. He drove his new car (his dad's old one), and Katie followed in our car with all his stuff! So I had some time for a longer run. I headed vaguely in the direction of Great Denham parkrun, thinking I could use the run there as a decent warm up. But I had more time than I'd thought - so my warm up got longer - to the extent that I'd done over five miles by the time I was hurtling towards the gathered runners at the start line. I reached the pack on the '1' of '3-2-1', so there was absolutely no respite before the harder running started.
Legs were a bit tired, but I managed 25:03 (benchmark) or 25:14 (results). I'll take the former - it's my fastest this year as I've been totally focused on distance rather than speed. Ideally I'd like to get under 25 at some point, to continue a streak that goes back quite a few years now. On my way round, there was obvious discomfort from the effort - but I tried to think about it as something other than me. Tried to be an observer of the pain, and to imagine myself existing beside it, rather than letting it be an all-encompassing thing. It still bloody hurt though
Easier (and more direct) run home after a quick drink with the local Fetchies, and got home with a strong urge to eat everything in sight
Yesterday, Katie was supporting her couch-to-triathletes in Emberton - so I planned a route to run there and get a lift back with her. I'm conscious that I've been shying away from off-road stuff again - so I went for the most direct route, which in my head was a fair bit of off roading, but (I've just added it up) was more like two-thirds small country roads, and one third fields. Still, better than nothing.
My top got sweaty after about half an hour, so I had to make the choice between life-threatening moob chafing or frightening other pedestrians. I hadn't met a soul since leaving the house, so I opted for the latter. I also took a video, to see just how much everything was wobbling (TLDR: "a lot"), but that's only suitable for publication on my OnlyFans channel. I found this to be the best vest configuration:
I am learning as I go when it comes to off-road stuff. A lot of the fields are reasonable underfoot at this time of year, and I can cope ok with a few nettles. Finding that one's path has been obliterated and rendered almost un-walkable by a plough is quite a downer though. I stumbled and swore my way across a few like this:
But the most uncomfortable bit had to be running through a field of wheat (I have a lot more respect for Teresa May now - she must be hard as nails or a bit of a deviant). It was all bone dry, and the footpath felt like it was no more than a foot wide. Luckily the crop didn't reach my naked torso, but it ripped the feck out of my legs. When I did finally reach Emberton, the look of shock on Katie's face upon seeing the number of cuts and grazes on my legs was priceless. I'll forgive the wheat though, because it was quite fun at the time, and I got to look at some lovely turbines. I am still waiting for the itchy redness to subside in my legs though, and it woke me up a lot during the night.
I found Katie at the changeover point from swim to bike, and once she'd established that I hadn't been attacked, and wasn't about to bleed out, I went to buy a can of pop from the burger van.
"Is it ok if I buy a can with a card?" I said.
"Yeah" said the lady, "here's what we've got" revealing a variety of cans and cartons.
"Oooh" I said, "I want something with a bit of sugar to give me a lift".
Bang. She grabbed one and thumped it down on the counter.
"This one will give you ADHD" she said triumphantly.
It tasted like water from a stream near a nuclear power station, but it did the job.
After watching a few more triathletes exit the transition area on their bikes (including one who only had one shoe clipped to his bike - he dumped the bike and ran back and get it, to catcalls such as "you've only got one shoe" and "you've forgotten your bike") we took a steady jog back to the car and home.
I hope you had a decent weekend
