It's been a nice week
On Monday, I discovered that the little code next to my nickname on my user profile had changed from MS to M40 - and all my current race times would earn me an extra 0.5% WAVA. If I can just maintain my current 5k speed until I'm 83, I should be the world record holder. Playing the long game, see.
Other than that, nothing seems to have changed. My wife is still epic, and gave me nice presents an took me to lunch:
and then, when I thought we'd settled in for the evening, the surprises kept coming, and our local running/cake-eating friends turned up for drinks and nibbles, and a game of Cards Against Humanity. It's a bit like the Stamford Experiment - tell people they have to take on the role of someone with dubious morals, and see who makes the most of it I thought I did ok, but I was ashamed to admit to some of the answers. The red wine helped, as did being 40:
I also got some champagne from the Big Folks in London, which was also a nice surprise!
On Wednesday, we drove to the Isle of Wight and back, to see Katie's dad - so we got a nice meal in a restaurant overlooking a very choppy sea (with a surfer on it!), and a walk along the sea front. The unpleasant bit was the traffic-laden drive there, and the serving person in the cafe on the ferry, who seemed to take great pleasure in making us feel as uncomfortable as it's possible to be whilst ordering two coffees and some toast.
I did my random act of kindness yesterday - I bought a sandwich for the Big Issue lady. I didn't buy a Big Issue, because the few I've read have been a bit lame - but she looked hungry, and it was piddling down. I've also been trying to encourage my local parkrun to do a food bank collection - it's not happening yet, but I am optimistic that it still will. It's been really good to hear about all the other donations, acts of kindness, and spin-off projects - makes me feel like the right sort of Christmassy.
Yesterday, the boy and I watched Star Wars. No spoilers here, but there's a thread for those that have seen it. I would just like to say that I pants-wettingly loved it, and I'm hoping my wife will let me take her to see it this weekend Here's the thread: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/forum__58463__the_force_awakens_contains_spoilers
Today I ran with three of the beginners group, and they treated me to an end of term / birthday coffee and cake, which the cake shop put a candle in, and then I nearly blushed myself to death when they all sung happy birthday.
Laters, taters.

Not me, thankfully.
It occurred to me a few weeks ago, having seen a friend of ours go through a whole bunch of cr*p, that a big network of people has a lot of potential to help each other. We don't just have to be about running - and we're not.
So I've spent a couple of hours today building this:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/jobs (you can also find it under the 'People' menu).
It's a very simple list that you can add to if you're either searching for employment, or conversely if you have a job that needs filling.
I've no idea if or how this will pan out. But I know of at least three jobless Fetchies, and I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg really. If we can get just one person a job, then it's totally worth it.
---
Today we ended our run at the supermarket, where me, Katie, and two of her running ladies, all grabbed a basket each and collected a tenner's worth of food to go in the food bank basket. It was nice to see that the big basket was already pretty full - and it's been fantastic reading about all your generosity today. There are some very lovely people who use this website, and plenty more in the wider world.

Great idea, I don't need it right now after landing on my feet, but there's no saying I won't again in the futureDiogenes9:24pm, 9th Dec 2015
I'd been completely unsure, and a bit dithery about entering this race - to such an extent that by the time I'd made up my mind (Tuesday), the race had sold out, and I had to scramble around to get a place. Luckily, sarabop knew a poor chap who'd broken his ankle, so I was able to do a transfer.
The run that made up my mind was this one from Tuesday:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=11927777
I'd set out to push myself a bit, and was really pleased with the way that I held everything together. And I told myself that if I felt *that* bad after running 5 miles at 7:30/mile, then I would be feeling considerably better after running 5 miles at my goal pace (8/mile).
So after thankfully getting hold of my place, I tried to have an easy running week - including being timekeeper at parkrun, where I had the pleasure of watching Binks cross the line as 'first finisher' at parkrun. Or, as I couldn't help yelling to everyone else there that I knew, and despite that ohsireemateybob it certainly is NOT a race, "James is bliddy winning!!!... and he's wearing a Fetch top!!!".
Saturday afternoon was some skirting board work in the new office (aka 'The Panic Room') - I managed to get one wall done. It was the easy one in the sense that it was like butter to drill in to, but it was the difficult one in that I had to get in behind all the furniture.
At 5pm I went with JenLov's husband to help set up the baggage hall - a masterpiece of taurpaulin and bluetak!
Race day came, and I dropped Katie at the station to go do her course in London (mercifully we hadn't heard anything about the stabbings, otherwise we'd have both been pretty scared I think), and after a bit of faffing time, I drove off to the race car park to jump on the official bus to the start.
I hadn't counted until just now, but this was my fifth attempt at this race, so I had a pretty good idea of where everything was. I did the usual faffing about, and said hello to a few people. I'd had a message from Mick (and Phil) to say that they'd be there, and setting off a little earlier than everyone else. I walked up to the start at about 9.45, just in time to give them both a hug, and to see them set off, which was lovely - Phil was clearly loving it, and Mick was just as stoic and determined as always.
Walking back, some Redway Runners ladies ran past me and said hello - I wasn't quite sure what their Fetch names were, sorry - but hello anyway I joined the masses (for warmth as much as anything), and pretty soon, we were coraled out onto the road - and I had my last moment of "why don't I just turn around and walk the other way".
1) 1m - 7:54(7:54/m) 98/143bpm
2) 1m - 7:47(7:47/m) 143/163bpm
3) 1m - 8:06(8:06/m) 159/164bpm
The first three miles shot by, and I guess I overcooked it a wee bit, but there was enough wind, and the view of the slopes ahead to keep me vaguely sensible.
4) 1m - 8:08(8:08/m) 160/169bpm
Mile 4 starts by going up the sharpest hill of the course, immediately followed by the sharpest descent - so it's hard work, but you get a decent bit of time coming back down to get yourself back together.
5) 1m - 8:16(8:16/m) 164/170bpm
6) 1m - 8:13(8:13/m) 164/169bpm
There's an ever so gradual, but very definite climb over these next two. Enough to make you feel it - and feel it I did. It also has a few bits where you pretty much have to stay in line (a narrow, banked lane, with cars creeping past the other way; and a short section on the A422, which is a 60mph road, albeit fairly wide).
7) 1m - 7:55(7:55/m) 162/167bpm
Mercifully you get a little breather in mile 7, whizzing downhill, and going past the half way point, which always has a time clock on it. My watch was telling me that I was just under 53 minutes, which would be great if I could sustain it
8) 1m - 8:35(8:35/m) 165/169bpm
9) 1m - 8:19(8:19/m) 165/170bpm
It's back to the grindstone though, as you have to earn back all that altitude you used up in mile 7 - but I managed to take it in turns to pass a few other runners, and tried to latch on to the back of any groups that were within range.
10) 1m - 7:51(7:51/m) 160/169bpm
The nine mile marker corresponds almost exactly to the highest point on the course, so you get a lovely drop in mile ten. I managed to eke back a second or two on my average pace, but I think I was still slightly the wrong side of it. I was still delighted to have broken the back of the course, and I was pretty confident of getting my best time on it, even if I couldn't get my HM best.
11) 1m - 8:10(8:10/m) 162/167bpm
There's still a lot of downhill here, but it's much shallower, and there's a little kick up right at the end to help finish your legs off. But you can start telling yourself that you've less than a parkrun to do, and working out how many more minutes of discomfort there are. This is usually where Lakes is stationed, playing what sounded very much like The Beastie Boys from his car stereo. I made him a very weak devil sign, and tried to headbang ever so slightly - but I was very pleased to see him, and he gave me a big cheer from Katie
12) 1m - 8:23(8:23/m) 161/165bpm
Towards the end of this mile, I felt my legs start to really tire. There were a few speedy people whizzing past me at this point, and I just tried to stay positive, and remind myself that I was well inside my course best.
13) 1m - 9:01(9:01/m) 160/166bpm
My legs were really fading now - I could feel my stride length getting shorter as I stiffened up at the top of my legs (matron!). Despite that it was quite a fun mile. I yelled encouragement at a walking bloke, who then ran past me a few minutes later, saying thank you for the encouragement. I also saw Binks, strolling back down the course, and he yelled something at me, so I mimed blowing my brains out at him. There's a nasty little incline in the back half of this mile, and it takes a LOT of swearing to get up it.
14) 0.13m - 1:02(8:00/m) 168/172bpm
Over the top of the incline, and there's a nice little down-the-slope-and-round-the-bend to the finish. Some people in the crowd were shouting out the name of a bloke just behind me, and it helped give me a little bit of energy to make sure he didn't come whizzing past (although looking at the times, he actually beat me on chip time - well done sir!).
I swore in exhaustion and delight at the man cutting the chips off our trainers. "F*&k me", I think I said, before you imagine that I was swearing *at* him. He smiled, and declined my offer
Having a slight tendency towards being a bit dizzy post race, I got some water, got my bag, and made my way back to the sports hall. Being a veteran of five Bedford HMs now, I know that the queue for grub can get big, so I made a beeline for it, and got myself a bacon roll, a Twix (the Snickers were sold out - travesty!), a can of coke, a cup of tea and a cup of coffee. I have to be careful after a hard run, because it seems that my stomach takes a while to boot up again - so I nibbled at my roll, and drank all my drinks.
I was joined by Nightjar, and this bloke: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/forum__58426__401_marathons_in_401_days_401runwithben - look him up if you can, and see if you can support him. He was very complimentary about my Christmas pudding hat.
The all-important finishing time was 1:47:38 (provisional), which I am massively pleased with. It's only 9 seconds quicker than my time at Bath back in March, but I think the course here is a bit more sapping. And it's 2m18s quicker than my course best at Bedford too
And (sorry, this'll be the last one), it's my highest ever WAVA at half marathon, at 56.87%, beating Bath, which got me 56.77%. I will be 40 years old next Monday, which seems pretty weird - but ever so slightly annoyingly, if I'd been 40 years old yesterday, I'd have snuck another 0.5% on top of my WAVA. Bring it on

I will code for 'sprout', but anything fancier than that might not get picked up.fetcheveryone10:45am, 4th Dec 2015

So will it pick up sprouting since that also contains sprout? My hope is "yes, by searching a wildcard after sprout"...so it would get sprout, sprouts, sprouter, sprouting, sproutable etc.Wine Legs10:55am, 4th Dec 2015

yes, anything with those six letters in that order, with no spaces, will be fine. So oewrgouhergsproutjegoiergj would be fine, for example.fetcheveryone10:57am, 4th Dec 2015
