A couple of times in the past, I've bumped into a Fetchie in the wild, and they've said something like "I haven't been on the site much, it's not like it used to be". It's everyone's right to choose whether to join in on the site, but when coupled with that second part, it does tend to hit me right in the feels. As users of the site, you are not passive consumers of some flavour that I've concocted in a lab. You are *part* of that flavour, and if you step away, then of course it will make the site just a bit less like something you want to taste.
The blog title refers to one of the later chapters in Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince (side note: it actually has older origins in tarot - but I prefer my fictional wizardry labelled as such). It's my favourite book in the series. It was published nearly 20 years ago, so hopefully what follows won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it.
In the chapter, Dumbledore and Harry return from a mission in the fight against Voldemort, but are ambushed by Voldemort's Death Eaters. Ultimately, Dumbledore is killed. In terms of the story, it's one of the most pivotal passages, and represents a well-crafted low point for our heroes. It's one that you can read a second time after finishing the story, and see exactly what was going on. The chapter title itself is symbolic. Up until now, Dumbledore has been a strong and reassuring presence, wise and powerful, rescuing Harry and the gang, or gently directing their efforts in the background.
And then he's gone, and the loss feels huge. The book that follows does a good job of dealing with the grief and uncertainty that comes with someone's passing - with Harry asking question of himself that Dumbledore can no longer answer. But throughout the book, Harry and his friends embrace those qualities that Dumbledore held. They do brave things, and take tough decisions, and show the world what they are capable of.
That's what we can do too. This week we lost a wonderful member of our community with the passing of swittle. All week I've read blogs and posts recalling all those things that made him special - his kindness; his broad smile; his willingness to support others; his keenness to photograph badgers; and his tenacity and joy when it came to running. And we can make sure that those characteristics are woven ever deeper into the fabric of this place and ourselves. I think he'd like that.

I had a message from Hanneke yesterday, on behalf of the folks on the 'Mundane Thread'. They were worried that swittle had not been seen online for several days. I emailed him, but had no reply - and today I contacted his local police force, and shared my best guess at his address. They agreed to do a welfare check.
Sadly they found him deceased at his home. The policeman thanked us all for helping to bring the situation to light. I've told him to please give my contact details to any family members, and so presumably at some point we may find out about a funeral. I will share any details that come my way.
I hope you're all ok. I am pretty shaken. I never had a chance to meet him, but he was a colourful character online, and always wonderfully kind, generous and supportive. It would be lovely to hear your recollections of him.
Here's a picture of him from August 2023, looking absolutely fabulous in his running attire:

Argh bugger. Such sad news and he has left a gap. Thank you Fetch and Hanneke for your concerns and sense of community, especially for having to do the heavy lifting of passing on the news, that also carries a heavy responsibility. The great dollop
I've not spent much time on fetch in the past years, but Swittle was a constant and just reading down the names of fetchies here has reminded me of how much you all have meant to me without even knowing and the impact and sense of community it has engendered.
This is the second time I've had this sort of news in two weeks from my running communities and it's so sad.
Thoughts are with everyone here and with, and for, and of, dear Swittle.7:40pm, 28th Feb 2024 -
😢 So many kind comments made by Swittle. So sad to see this news.JCB2:47pm, 3rd Mar 2024
I had a blood test for an annual review of my blood pressure meds, and have been told that my 'bad' cholesterol is up from 2.51 to 3.45. In conjunction with my blood pressure, the doctor felt that this was an indication that we should take some sort of action. I have a Q score of 4 apparently.
I was offered (a) statins, or (b) the opportunity to improve my diet to see how this would impact on my cholesterol with a follow-up blood test in six months time. Knowing what I do about my eating habits over the last year, I've gone with (b).
My focus has been on reducing saturated fat, but the information out there feels a bit confusing at times. I've switched from real butter to Flora Light (is that a good thing? It's definitely lower in saturated fat, but is it all smoke and mirrors?); I've given up snacking on cheddar and crackers; ditto for biscuits; and ditto for crisps. I've also been counting my alcohol units, and in the last two weeks, I've had 10 units per week. I only tend to have meat a couple of times a fortnight, and I'm trying to increase my vegetable intake. In that fortnight, my saturated fat only went above 30g in a day on one occasion, when we had fish and chips - but most times it's mid-20s, and on some days it's less than 10g.
I've lost about 5lbs in that time (I was 13st3, but am down to 12st12), which is an encouraging side-effect that will hopefully help with the focus, but I want to make sure I am doing the best things. This morning I noticed that I have denty bits under my ribs where my belly goes in a bit, not out a bit. I read on the internet that a pound of fat would be about the size of a 'generously filled pint glass' - so hopefully I've shifted some of my stored fat.
Stuff like eggs and cashews - I find the messages confusing. I could really do with there being one reference that I could turn to for advice on what I should (a) cut out, (b) limit, or (c) eat more of.
There's a (fairly old) thread that I bumped yesterday - so for longer-term cholesterol chat, you can call in there:

Or of course you can just leave a snappy comment here or some such

I wouldn't rush to take a statin with a QRISK3 score of 4 either, and I'm quite positive about statins, bearing in mind that although the evidence to support them is compelling it's based on statistics, not individuals, so you don't necessarily know that YOU will benefit from taking one and there's a tiny risk that you'll be harmed. I'd go back to the butter but be mindful of portion size/frequency, and the other changes you've made are in line with recommendations.Raptors claws are coming to town5:41pm, 20th Feb 2024

I had a colleague who used to manipulate his cholesterol by diet alone just so he could take part in his own research studies, so diet can definitely help.Grast_girl
Oily fish, particularly sardines, mackerel etc have good fats that should help.
The flora light may be better than butter in some ways, but it also depends on whether it contains interesterified fats or not, which have limited evidence for and against. It doesn't contain trans fats, which is good. The naturally occurring trans fats in butter probably aren't doing harm, but industrial ones do.
Most UK foods have removed industrial TF now, but look for partially hydrogenated oil and avoid like the plague. Anything containing solid fat (flaky pastry) that has a longish shelf life may contain TF or IEF (interesterified fats that don't need to be labelled).
You might want to include something with plant sterols (Benecol etc) instead of the flora.
The other good thing for cholesterol is beta-glucans, which are found in oats and barley, so porridge and pearl barley could be helpful.
Eggs shouldn't have an effect.
Cashews, I'm not so sure of, but walnuts are good.
The DASH diet is good for lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol. A few sessions with a dietitian may be a good investment if funds permit.
NB, I'm not a nutritionist, just a food scientist.6:09pm, 20th Feb 2024 -
Is sat fat still a baddy? I thought it had been somewhat rehabilitated and seed oils were the new no-no - sunflower, rapeseed etc. Olive and avocado oil are now being touted as the best plus coconut to some extent. Everything goes full circle. I would just avoid processed food (including margarine - even rats won’t touch it!) and sweet stuff except fruit (sorry) cook from scratch from real ingredients if possible. See what happens.Non-runner6:45pm, 20th Feb 2024

"..my saturated fat only went above 30g in a day on one occasion, when we had fish and chips". I never eat takeaways and avoid pre-prepared food as much as possible. Is this part of your "problem"? (There's a question mark there because I'm still not sure what higher levels of the wrong sort of cholesterol might be good or bad for.)Oranj
My bus pass is imminent so I do an off-the-shelf cholesterol test from time to time, just to make sure I've not made any serious errors lately. Those tests are undoubtedly not as precise as a test at a GP but they can give you an indication.8:39pm, 20th Feb 2024 -

Food is a minefield and what works for you may not work for someone else, and vice versa. It’s all down to your gut micrbiome, innit? Of course it’s also not just important what you eat but when you eat it. Worth looking at if those cheese & crackers are a late night treatCheeky’s Dad9:39pm, 20th Feb 2024

Overnight Oats for breakfast (or porridge) as both are supposed to be good for lowering cholesterol. BaronBR had a similar high result and was given statins initially but is now concentrating on diet only until his next test. He has those yoghurt drinks that are supposed to lower cholesteral too - Benecol do them but supermarkets do their own brand at about £2 cheaper.BaronessBL10:18pm, 20th Feb 2024

definitely one of the problems with the low fat diet that has been the staple of "healthy eating" for several decades now is that the fat is replaced in your diet with something else and for most people that ends up being carbs. Diversity in diet is key to finding a sustainable approach.DingDocMerrily10:19am, 21st Feb 2024

This is exactly of what happened to me a couple of months ago. I am heavier and the count was slightly higher too. I cant do oily fish (a whole gag reflex thing) so am trying to get this via tablets (I know not ideal). The idea of going to statins seemed drastic and am seeing how it goes before taking that leap. The information online i found was truly awful. Being told you need to correct by diet but then most evidence seems to indicate this is not effective for most people. I know people who have been able to reduce their count via diet and more that have not .Spanners9911:20am, 21st Feb 2024

Mine is 7.5 and statins have been suggested I have asked for a couple of months to reduce it failing that I expect I will have to go on them. My downfall is real butter which I have sadly got rid of. I think it's going up with age and my diet isn't really the problem. I have got the nasty spread and will see what happens at the next blood test.Looby Loo4:32pm, 21st Feb 2024

I'm growing garlic. It's going absolutely gangbusters.
Katie made me some special chocolate for Valentine's Day.
I boarded out our loft. The previous owners took an interesting approach to insulation.
I took no chances.
I've done some lovely long runs. The weather has been mostly kind. Sometimes it's been very generous.
My sister's dog decided to bite my arm and attempted to rip my trousers off me (I'll put this behind a spoiler tag, but it just looks like some heavy scratches). Arm is fine, trousers retired.
And The Boy continues to be very tall and impressive.

February 18th marks three Noahs (120 days) since our flood (see fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2023/10/473835 for details).
I last blogged about it after one Noah had passed. It took exactly 40 days for the loss adjustor to visit the house, and tick the box marked "yes, this house has been flooded". At that point I was hoping it'd trigger some progress and get us some place a bit more permanent than the hotel I'd been staying at to have time with my boy.
Eventually we got approval to rent a place. With a hired van, and help from Katie, we moved two beds, the special rug, a desk and a telly in on December 15th. We found a free sofa on the local Facebook group (which now no longer smells of Glade Plugins), and a free man to help me lift it; and picked up a TV stand and a little chest from the local BHF furniture place. We'd also had a payout for the ruined contents of the flooded house, so we spent a few hundred quid on replacement kitchen and bathroom items to help us settle in.
My boy seems pretty happy with the location, because it's within Breaston's golden triangle of pubs (which he's now in the habit of frequenting with his mates); plus he works at one of them a couple of evenings a week so he can walk there and back. It's also close enough that he *can* walk to and from school, although that's only happened a couple of times through necessity. I keep telling him it'd be good practice for EfM, but instead he's been working on seeing exactly how late he can get up in time for school. I am really glad he has some sort of settled place in plenty of time that he can focus on his A-Levels. Is it just me, or do kids not seem to get much homework these days?
Meanwhile, back at the flooded house, the drying equipment was still running. I got a call on January 3rd from the company that put it all in - they'd gone to check the progress of the drying, and broken the key in the lock. I made arrangements with them to bring the back door key on my next trip up on January 10th. At this point, I don't mind some delays, because it takes us one week closer to being able to stay where we are until the boy goes to university in September (fingers crossed). I let the guy in, and he returned the key to me later that day.
And then... there's been very little. Apparently the drying company have signed off that the house is dry - and I assume now that they took their equipment during that visit. I haven't been back for a look. I don't believe that they've replaced the lock on the front door (although they admitted responsibility), so I don't think anyone's been in since Jan 10th. That's five weeks of absolutely nowt.
My claim handler has been in touch a couple of times. Once to ask for my power tariffs so they could pay out for the electricity that the driers used; and also to see if I wanted a cash settlement for repairs, or whether I wanted them to appoint contractors to do the job. Given that there are dozens and dozens of houses now requiring repair in the area; and that anecdotally it was difficult in the first place to find a builder-type-person, I've asked them to do it all.
The company overseeing the repairs called me a week or so ago, and booked an appointment to come and visit on February 21st. That's just to look and see what needs doing. Even though in theory this would all have been in the loss adjustors report.
And that's about it. I am still fine about it all, more so now because the boy is happier, and because I'm in a very lucky position really compared to some. At some point I will get back to the flood house and sort out our upstairs belongings. We've had the house since my boy was little, so there are still toys in his room that he's long since grown out of - and so I need to bite the bullet and sort them into charity/keep piles, and will probably make some use of the loft in Bromham which I spent a few hours boarding out a couple of weekends ago.
Another update in forty days and forty nights Keep raving, you filthy animals.

If you add an event to our race listings, I normally send you an fmail about 10 months later, asking for your help in relisting it. Lots of you are very epic about this, and will spend a couple of minutes digging following the link to the listing, and finding out the date of the current year's edition. Sometimes I also get sad messages saying "it's not on this year"
As with just about everything on Fetch, our listings are only as strong as we are as a collective. To help share the load, I've built a page that brings together all of the listings that happened around this time last year, and the year before. And then it filters out all the ones that *have* happened this year, leaving the ones that have dropped off the radar.
If you'd like some brownie points*, it would be overwhelmingly terrific if you could pick half a dozen events off the list, and try to find the dates of their 2024 editions. Once you have the relevant date, you can visit the 2023 version, and just click the 'Copy Listing' button. This takes you to a page where you can insert the new date.
Here's the page. As I write, there are 410 races on the list. How many can we re-list?
fetcheveryone.com/race-helplist.php
You can also find the link on the 'Race' page here:
*not exchangeable for anything of worth, unless cuddles count.
EDIT: Oh heck, I didn't mean for the list to turn into a reminder/shaming for the folks who had kindly added the events in previous years. If anything, it was a way of showing the folks who *do* add listings. I've removed nicknames from the list now.

Worth noting that before setting up a 2024 version folks should check if the race is listed under a slightly different name on that date already. For instance, I checked for the 'Wymondham 20' on 24/03/24 and found 'Wymondham AC 20 miler' in the listings on that date.Funky Chicken5:13pm, 9th Feb 2024

Having found a few other listings like the one I mentioned in my previous post, is there a way that those of us with the time and inclination could perhaps try to get some of the historic race information more in order? i.e., where a listing has gone by a different name in different years, could it be linked to the previous ones so that all the reviews/results carry through rather than it just seeming like a standalone? Also, it might then be good if people are able to post updates on the latest status of that race, e.g. I recently looked up the first Half I'd ever run and found a post from the organiser indicating they were stopping it after many years.Funky Chicken5:38pm, 9th Feb 2024

Half formed thought, forgive me if this doesn't make sense, but I'd find it easier to see a list of those near me...to that end could you return these as "unconfirmed" or something in the race finder and ask people to yes/no if they think it's on this year - and if so which date?JustCommando!7:19pm, 9th Feb 2024

Even though I'm not racing at the moment, I still like to do my bit and update; I also correct previous errors in naming (often removing sponsor names, too) so that previous versions of the same race all appear on the dropdown for the current raceSigh7:19pm, 9th Feb 2024
-
That’s useful to know Sigh - I hadn’t realised that renaming it would immediately forge the connection with prior races - I thought it was only if the person creating the listing had actively rolled it forward from the previous entry. I’ll try to get some of my local race histories in order at some point.Funky Chicken7:38pm, 9th Feb 2024

The races I organised last year will not be going ahead as 'annual events' this year. That said I may well organise some races this year but the venues, distances, names of events and dates will probably be different. I'll add them of course if I do them though!BaronessBL9:35pm, 9th Feb 2024

Just picked one I’d heard of and had a look ‘Berkhamstead 5 miles' is listed but as 'Berkhamstead 5M' instead. I wonder how many of the others had had a slight name change.chunkyblizzard10:03pm, 9th Feb 2024

It's all about matching titles. If two instances of an event have different titles (even if only slightly) they are seen as different events. I am guessing that this is the issue.fetcheveryone10:04am, 12th Feb 2024

In another bout of 'not actually training for the thing, but instead sitting indoors imagining doing it', I've been looking at some numbers for the notional 100k that I might, maybe, possibly be aiming for at Escape from Meriden. The race is still (*checks watch*) 40 weeks away, but I thought I'd look at the 26 week (i.e. six month) period prior to the event, so that I know what I'd be letting myself in for.
In this blog, I've looked solely at running, but I did consider the amount of walking I'd do in a previous blog - see fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2024/1/478013 for that.
I looked at a slightly different data set this time - people who had recorded a 100k run in their training log having never achieved that distance in the past. I wanted to see the first time 100k attempts. Firstly, here's a distribution of the times that people got:
(excuse the lack of titles on any of the graphs, I'll explain what each one refers to)
The numbers along the bottom is the finishing time, rounded to the nearest hour. And the numbers up the side are the number of people in that finishing bracket. So there are some speed merchants on the left, but the bulk of runners are somewhere between 11-17 hours. Seems doable
The next graph shows the number of days of running that runners in each time bracket did. Once again, finish times are along the bottom, with the number of days training up the side:
At the speedy end, the six hour runners train for ~132 days out of a max of 182, or about 5 days a week. Meanwhile, finish times ~18 hours came off the back of 78 days of running, or 3 days a week. At the moment I'm managing three days a week, but would like to do more. I need to get a bit tougher as far as weather and apathy are concerned
Next up is a 'total training distance' graph. Finish times along the bottom; total miles of training up the side:
At the crazy end, the six hour runners do ~1325 miles in the six months before the race - that's about 50mpw. Our 18 hour runner knocks out about 700 miles of running, or 27mpw. I've been hitting the mid-20s so far this year, so it feels like it's a good starting point for me.
And finally, I looked at the longest run, longest five runs, and longest ten runs. Race outcome along the bottom; the blue line shows longest run; orange shows the sum of the longest five runs; and yellow the sum of the longest ten runs. I've drawn a trend line through each one:
The blue line is flattest - suggesting that irrespective of distance, most 100k runners do some sort of 30-40ish mile run (~50k) at some point prior to the big day. The orange and yellow lines have an increasing slope, suggesting that the nuttier runners do more longer runs than than their real-world counterparts. The six hour runner does five runs totalling 150mi, whilst our 18 hour runner totals more like 130. It's more pronounced with the yellow line, with maybe ~255 across ten runs for the six hour runner; and more like ~220 for the 18 hour runner. Although as you can see from the graph, the 18 hour runners in our data did a bit more than the trend line suggests.
I'd take all these numbers with a pinch of low sodium salt - each data point hides a different person and a unique story, and as per the walking blog, it's *really* not all about the running with ultra distances. But I had fun playing with the numbers, so I thought I'd share.
In the real world, my running January went pretty well. I went through 100 miles with one 12 miler and a couple of 10s. I was happy to finish each of them, but equally I didn't end up in a heap, and could have done more if needed. My trundling along pace is creeping down into sub-9mins/mile territory every now and then. And February started with an 11.5mi during which I listened to the Test Match for most of it, so it felt like it all went by pretty quick; with a 10k the following day to get my legs familiar with the idea of getting back running with a short turnaround. I don't hit the six month mark for EfM until mid-May - so for now I'm just getting out there. Trainers up to 1162 miles, and still going strong New hydration vest to be debuted soon Recorded another podcast today

Time on feet, there really isn't an alternative to it in my mind.Sam Jelfs
Take a look at something like the Relentless Forward Progress training plans. For a 100k race, there is a plan that peaks at 50miles per week, with 1 think only one 30+ Mike run in it.
Back to back long runs are a favourite for me, make sure you do a decent length run on tired legs.5:13pm, 7th Feb 2024 -
It totally depends, on so many factors. Unless you're at the sharp end, I think the only important thing, is, are you enjoying the journey. I've seen so many people hate the training and then beat themselves up because they have 'failed' to hit some arbitary goal.Fenners-Reborn7:41pm, 7th Feb 2024

You know this already, right? I'm sure I've mentioned it.
Anyway, the reason I'm mentioning it is that I've just been a guest on the 'Running is BS' podcast with Stewart Harding and Amy Cuthbert-Genders. I've been trying to do what I can to get the website into a few heads, and so I asked if they'd be willing to have me on as a guest. And they said yes!
You can probably find them on your favourite podcast app, but here's a web link with an in-page browser if you'd like to listen:
runningisbs.com
Prior to the show, I'd listened to a few back episodes to get the idea, and it's a fun experience with two real-world runners. And they get a big bonus point for a Fawlty Towers reference in the episode description! You can also follow Stewart, with his training log currently importing to his new Fetch profile here: fetcheveryone.com/userprofile.php?id=111475
I'm hoping to get on a few other podcasts in the coming months

There Are Some Really Sexy Girls On Fetch
Comments
My original reasons for joining the site have, in the main, gone; and yet I feel a stronger connection on here than ever. It is a truly wonderful place.
And didn’t Dumbledore also say something about no one being truly gone, while they are remembered?
Wait... what? Dumbledore dies?! *Throws book aside*
And FWIW, if I don't join in much these days, it's because *I* am not what I was; not the site – which remains as important and life-changing as ever it was.
Am going to try to spend a bit more time around here, as I realise its been missing from my life.
Thanks for the thoughtful blog and for being you Fetch and having to bear the message this past week - it's a duty we don't volunteer for.
