Just sharing a little coffee-time coding project...
I know at least some of you use other services (like goodreads) to record your reading lists, but just in case you want somewhere simple to do that, I've built a very quick prototype for storing book lists:
fetcheveryone.com/mybooks.php
If it ends up being just me that uses it, I'm fine with that - but if it turns into something that gets good usage, there's an opportunity to turn this into something really useful / fun.

A lovely lady told me that she'd always make sure there was Marmite in the cupboard; that, if we were in trouble, she'd trust me to fly our Millennium Falcon out of trouble; and that if I ever chose to wear a fez, she'd support me.
She's always supported me, always trusted me, and there's currently a 500g jar of Marmite sitting in the cupboard, plus a tiny emergency heart-shaped pot (the kind you get at hotel breakfast) at the back, although it has never come to that.

Today's calendar challenge is to describe an outdoor place that makes you feel very happy. And today's events have inspired me to join in (although of course I'm not entering the draw).
Anyway... the short story is that I was hoping to get a batch of Fetch shirts in on December 10th, to send out to the folks that preordered them in plenty of time for Christmas. There was trouble at t'mill at Ron Hill Specials, with machinery problems and a Covid outbreak, which meant that they only got the last bit of the order dispatched yesterday. And then, the crowning turd in the water pipe is that DHL claim to have delivered it today... you can guess the rest.
So I sent out a bunch of fmails to the people who ordered, with my tail between my legs. I fuckin g HATE it when stuff like this happens.
But the replies have been absolutely lovely. They were all along the lines of "s'ok matey", but I've got all emotional. My favourite place outside of home is everywhere, because you lot are everywhere.
There's plenty of things going on in the world to make us sad, and plenty of sad things that happen to us all too. And when placed against that scale, this annoyance is a gnat bite on an elephant really. But the love and support isn't. The love is a big slobbery elephant snog, and I'm not gonna wipe my face for the rest of the day.

A few more updates to the hill analysis:
fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-hillfinder.php
Mainly I've just been working on allowing a bit more flexibility for small downs that come in the middle of big ups.
As ptb said in the comments on my last blog, any definition of 'hill' in this case will always divide opinion. So whilst I may carry on tweaking it, I'm pretty happy with the overall performance.
The examples posted have been very useful to test on, thank you
I will aim to do a bit more to the page, and then to link to it somewhere within Train > Summary & Analysis, as a starting point.

Is it time for a hillfinder update blog?Dvorak11:38am, 29th Jan 2022
First, some updates to the hill finder... I've made some amendments to the page to make the units more familiar, and I've amended some of my terminology, as I think some folks may have misinterpreted the previous column titles. The training entry IDs have been replaced with dates to make them a bit more friendly. I've also added a bit of colour-coding to the gradient values in the last column; and there's a new row right at the bottom of the table which shows sum totals and your average gradient.
Have a play here:
fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-hillfinder.php
And now, here's my conundrum:
It turns out that one of the most difficult parts of finding your biggest hills is working out where they start and end.
Here's part of an elevation trace from a walk by um - (x axis is metres travelled, y axis is altitude in metres).
My hill analysis has given him a hill from 10,780 metres up to 11,190 metres.
But I agree with him, that it would probably be fairer to say that this hill begins at about 10,475 metres at sea level, and continues to about 11,400 metres.
As I've mentioned in my previous blog, the problem comes about because of small downhill sections, like the one from 10,600 to 10,700 metres, and the sharper one at about 11,200 metres. It's these two short downhill portions that have convinced my algorithm to give the hill narrower bounds.
But the algorithm isn't just inferring "downhill reading => end of hill". You can see that between 10780 and 11190, there are a few kinks in the data that it's successfully ironing out.
Which brings me back to the question. How much downhill is enough for us to say that a hill has ended? How do we remove 'noise' from this information?
Here's the raw data, if you fancy playing about. I'll put it in a spoiler tag so it doesn't make the blog massive

I'll put it in a spoiler tag so it doesn't make the blog massive

not a clue, looks at a chart is far easier than looking at the data! Could the downhill that doesn't count be viewed as a maximum percentage of the hill if that makes sense? ie on a longer hill it can have no more than 10% of downhill in the up?chunkyblizzard9:50am, 17th Dec 2021
-
That's something I'm considering - for every metre of 'up' accrued, there's a certain percentage that's allowed to be 'down' before the hill is abandoned and steps then traced backwards to return to the summit.fetcheveryone10:00am, 17th Dec 2021

Not an answer, yet, but I see your data is different to my data. Well, Garmin's. Is the Garmin Connect data not from the watch? Or do you reset it in someway?um

fetcheveryone.com/t-19490760 thats a 'run' i did up from Ennerdale to Steeple and beyond which has a huge climb out of the valley to the top of the ridge as well as more ups and downs over the rest of my trip. The initial climb is broken into several chunks so i guess what wants to be happening is looking ahead and seeing if there are a bunch of net up's in a sequence. It's often the case up in the Lake District tops to do a climb to a fell which has some downs due to the slopes yet are still essentially climbing up to the ridge topkstuart10:14am, 17th Dec 2021

Looks much nicer, but I've got a particularly glaring oddity as my first entry - says total climb is 264m yet the individual run only goes from more or less sea level to more or less 95m, and the total elevation in the summary of the file shows 137m of climb. This entry fetcheveryone.com/t-19003417 (which was before I got my watch with a barometric altimeter so should be unadulterated Garmin info; though could have massive GPS altitude errors I suppose?)larkim10:18am, 17th Dec 2021

Aha, so in Garmin Connect I've always had elevation corrections "enabled", so I don't see wild data. But in fact the watch recorded (as it will with GPS for altitude) some pretty wild figures which is what is skewing that activity (I've just unticked the elevation correction on GC for that activity and can now see a massive, but nonexistent, hill at the start). So not visible to me on GC, not visible to me on Fetch, but present in the raw data. I suspect this will be an issue for quite a few activities for quite a few users which might need a rethink about how clean the data you're getting and analysing is.larkim10:22am, 17th Dec 2021

Same as larkim - I've also been comparing GC data (with elevation correction enabled) vs raw watch data, and I see they are only 'loosely' connectedum10:37am, 17th Dec 2021

Here's the two graphs of offending data on GCwith the top one being wildly wrong. Bad elevation data from a GPS-only watch is pretty par for the course I think (hence some of my pan flat canal routes are showing up with hills in my running hills table).larkim10:46am, 17th Dec 2021

Maybe like the benchmarks, it could be tweaked to allow for an "ignore" option.larkim10:47am, 17th Dec 2021

I wonder, if an 'easy' fix, unless you find a wonder smoothing cure, is to allow us to extend or shrink the hill - a bit like the trim options on an activity, let us edit your auto parameters on the hills that matter to extend either end?um
And maybe have some default correction for elevations below zero. Unless diving or my trip to Death Valley.10:47am, 17th Dec 2021 -

Also whatever you do on hill algorithm, some people won't be happy. Include some downs and folk will complain that the 'true' gradient of the effort isn't reflected. Draw the bounds at the downs, and folk will complain the 'true' length of the effort isn't reflected.
Also - that could even be the same user, about the same climb. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯11:44am, 17th Dec 2021 -

I've made some adjustments to the algorithm for my hill finder. I am mostly interested in getting the data looking sharp before I consider the presentation aspect, or how best to integrate it with the rest of the site. The suggestions along those lines are all good though.
Of note, I've added some filtering that will remove spikes in the data e.g. Fitz's London Marathon hills looked to be single spikes in elevation, probably caused by the dodgy GPS around Canary Wharf. And um's mystery hill is because there are some -75m readings in the raw data (not sure if what I've done will cure that yet). Elsie's climbs in Liverpool Docks still elude me - I have to be careful that adding a safeguard for one user doesn't obliterate legitimate hills for other users.
I've also added some leeway for hills that have small downhills embedded in them e.g. K5 Gus's big hill has a tiny downhill portion in the middle of a frick-off big hill It won't be quite right yet, I'm sure, but I can keep tuning.
And so it's not lost in the comments, this table works *if and only if* your watch generates retrievable elevation data on the spot. If it doesn't send us elevation data, I use sample locations from along your route to retrieve an elevation profile, but I'm not using this imported profile in my hill finder. Sorry.
The table has also been trimmed to show your top 100 hills by climb., and the table is based on your last 365 days of training. It got me thinking about more applications for this e.g. collect 100 x 10m+ climbs for the bronze badge, 100 x 25m+ for the silver, etc. It'd be interesting to see who has the biggest collection of hills. How big is your hundredth highest hill? For my cycling, it's 11.8 metres, for walking, it's 10.4, and for my running, I don't have enough that are bigger than the 10 metre limit I set as the minimum definition of 'hill'

That’s definitely loads better. My biggest offenders are now in Milton Keynes so I guess due to buildings getting in the way of satellite data. No suggestions on how to fix it though cos the data looks real enough.Elsie Too
Maybe just an option for us to say ignore this training entry so we can manually fix the list? But you won’t want to do that until you have given up trying to fix in a more clever way. Good luck.5:48pm, 16th Dec 2021 -

Stevce - your #1 hill shows a 129 metre climb which, looking at the elevation for that run in detail, begins at about 0.8km, and continues through to about 1.4km (the section where it looks like you leave the main road). Your #100 hill (a 27 metre climb about 1.9km into the run) is part of a run that also included your #9 hill (a 47 metre climb at about 5.1km into the run). I am still adjusting the algorithm, because it's very sensitive to small dips in the middle of an ascent - so some larger hills maybe being cut in two. And quite how one determines how much 'down' marks the end of one 'up', I'm not quite surefetcheveryone10:31pm, 16th Dec 2021

I've been playing with some code that will attempt to find the biggest hills in your training. It's just a prototype at the moment, but it will show you your biggest uphills (if your watch does decent elevation), along with some other stats. Those extra stats are just proof of concept at the moment, so it doesn't display anything in 'friendly' units just yet
Have a look at your biggest hills from the last 365 days:
fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-hillfinder.php
A few potential offshoots from this:
1) improvements to gradient analysis.
2) some sort of biggest hill database for you / for everyone.
3) auto-detect whenever you go up one of your hills (Fetch Slices, anyone? Segments are for chocolate oranges, and chocolate oranges are for the bin. QED.).
Toodles!

Disappointing to discover that my watch doesn’t appear to produce acceptable data (given that I live in such a hilly place) On the upside it gives me another justification for buying a new watch. I’m assuming that Garmin produces the requisite data?Cheeky’s Dad3:16pm, 16th Dec 2021

A great idea Fetch. But looks a little iify - eg my top 2 walk hillsum
1) 19279818 101.4 looks way overstated
2) 19764969 66.8 looks way understated
If you progress things, how about a date on the display, and a route name (ir there is one), or the ability to add a name to the hill / training.3:28pm, 16th Dec 2021 -
My worst climbs is my nearest short run that I have done the most cool.Frosty The Bowman 🇸🇪3:34pm, 16th Dec 2021

@um - in your case, the raw data for 19279818 has some altitudes of minus 75 metres. When you view this in your training log, I think it's ignoring these heavily negative points.fetcheveryone3:39pm, 16th Dec 2021
-
@K5Gus - levelling off is accounted for, but any drop in altitude is currently seen as the 'end' of the hill. I can factor in some leeway, but the question is how much? And the answer is probably something to do with the length of string.fetcheveryone3:40pm, 16th Dec 2021

Oi! I've just been eating a chocolate orange. And I don't have any hills (Forerunner 35: there's definitely elevation data. Like this one fetcheveryone.com/t-19643266Dvorak4:03pm, 16th Dec 2021

Dvorak - this doesn't work with elevations that are generated by taking a sample of points from your route - so if your watch doesn't provide the data first up, it won't work. I can't see elevation values in the raw data for that training entry. And I'm sorry to hear about your chocolate orange. I hope it doesn't affect you too badly.fetcheveryone4:07pm, 16th Dec 2021

On any badge page, you should now see a new square-brackety code that you can copy-paste into forum posts and blogs. And I've added a new badge today - it's called 'Never Tell Me The Odds':
you can get it by entering all the doors in the calendar
If you've missed some out, there will be one more amnesty day at some point between now and the 24th.

I've been nurdling the People page around today, to try to make it a bit more useful.
Here's the old one:
and here's the new one:
I wanted to work on this page to make some improvements for the folks who aren't following anyone and aren't being followed by anyone. This is one of the things my boy picked up when I got him to do some usability testing for me. The page was blank and pointless for noobs - so hopefully it's a little better now.
Anyway... for those of you with followers and followees, I've done a little bit of tidying / messing with the list of people that you are following at the top, but I've also added a list of all the people who are following you, and added some 'Follow Back' buttons. So you can see who all your stalkers are in one easy glance
That's about it really, but I hope it's useful. I had my booster today. I thought I was getting a headache, but then I didn't. Good story, huh?

If you dont have the Crimbo skin on, then the run red box against a red background doesn't look great. They do look very slightly different shades of red, but a different coloured box or background would be better, or some other solution.K5 Gus
Us regulars know the colours for different activity types, but if one of the reasons for the change was for the benefit of noobies, then they won't know what a red/blue/green/pink box means, before at least there was a bit of a clue with the R,S,B,W in the header. Any room in the header to show red = run, green = bike, etc ?
Before you could look down the bike column and compare, now if some in the list don't swim ( say ) then the green boxes are not lined up, so more difficult to compare. Can you include a zero box for activities to keep the columns all for one activity type ?
So, all in all, I like the addition of who is following you at the bottom, but think the bit at he top is a backward step5:46pm, 8th Dec 2021 -
In the bit that says "Give friends access to more of your profile by adding them to your buddy list." when you follow the link to that page, the people who follow you could be listed there so you *can* add them to your buddy list. (Maybe under the "People Who Have Buddied You" bit?)Oranj7:29pm, 8th Dec 2021

[I've also posted this on the 'Map Lovers' thread, which is worth a gander if maps get you going: https://www.fetcheveryone.com/forum/map-lovers---this-is-the-thread-for-you-61634/]
Here's a challenge for you, map fans.
I would like to give people the option of putting their training graphics e.g.
on an actual map, rather than against a plain background.
I'm looking for an online service that would let me access free map tiles for the whole of the UK. Ideally, these would be image files (like PNGs) that I can either download en masse, or that I could retrieve by sending a latitude/longitude to a web service.
I figure that the main thing driving up the cost of the tiles would be the level of detail. But I also think that for my purpose here, a low level of detail would be fine. So just listing town names, major roads, larger bodies of water etc would be sufficient. I held my nose and looked at some of the maps that the orange place use for sharing on social media - and they really don't have much detail. So these could be quite small scale tiles.
All suggestions welcome.

There are nearly 200 Fetchies who have a running streak of 7 days or more. And to break into our top ten streakers, you'd need to run every day for nearly three years.
"How do you know this?" I hear you ask. Well, I've built a league table that shows you everyone with 7 days or more. You can see it here:
fetcheveryone.com/league-streaking.php
You can also use the dropdown to look at cycling, swimming and walking. Not many swim streaks at this time of year!
I've also amended the current streak analysis page so that it shows your complete current and best-ever streaks, for those who are interested:
