It's a nice day over on the '100 miles every month in 2024' thread, as folks are getting over the line with their final runs of the month. But I wanted to give a shout out to being cautious, before you put your running shoes away for the final time this month.
fetcheveryone.com/forum/100-miles-a-month-in-2024-62881/
When you view your monthly totals in your training log, they are rounded to the nearest whole number. This rounding is necessary because 14 columns (12 months plus month name, plus annual total) means each one doesn't have a lot of room.
But.
Some folks are chasing the '100 miles every calendar month in a year' badge. It does *not* do any rounding, so if you've run 99.99999999999999999 miles, well that's not 100. If you're not worried about badges, you can disregard the rest of this blog.
You can see your monthly total to one decimal place in your training log. Here's what you need to look for:
The first circle highlights your chosen time period (in January you can just use 'all of 2024'); the second one is the 'Totals' tab; and the third one shows your mileage to one decimal place.
I can see eleven Fetchies who currently have a run total of between 99.5 and less than 100 miles for January. I would hate for anyone to miss out on a badge so soon in the year.
Once round the block should do it. Depending on the size of your block. Exercise caution!

Thanks to everyone for your comments on the future of our Member of the Month award. All I wanted to add to them is that I have never seen it as a popularity thing. People have shared parts of their lives, both the good and bad parts; or they've got involved with threads and blogs; or they've run epic races and shared their adventure - and earned that right for recognition.
But I've made the decision that it's time to retire it as a concept. As for whether we do something to replace it - I'm not sure about that just now. Let's see how we go.
I've removed the nomination links from user profiles, and removed the MOTM page from the menu. But I'll keep the MOTM interviews on the server for the time being. It's nice to look back at them sometimes. I maybe have a couple more to add to the list (if I get images from a couple of winners) - but here's the archive that dates back to March 2009: fetcheveryone.com/motm
Just look at all those earnest and (mostly) happy faces. That's you lot that is.
And because I've made the call to drop it, I didn't just want to run down the clock with our sponsor. So instead we'll have a couple of free-for-all competitions with the two remaining prizes. All you've got to do to enter is bung your email address into the following page, and I'll pick a winner at random on February 7th (and then a second one for March):
fetcheveryone.com/competition-ledlenser.php
(if you're feeling charitable or grateful to our most recent sponsor, do please tick the box that shares your email address with them. You can always unsubscribe from their mailing list if you don't like what they send you.)
The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change.

I'm with minardi that the past interviews should be kept. The lovely folks at Ledlenser are stepping down as sponsor of our Member of the Month award after February's winner is announced in early March. They have provided awesome head torches to winners every month since late 2022. My contact there is lovely; and I've got a Ledlenser head torch which I think is awesome. NB no money changed hands for me to say that, I just wanted to credit them for being a great supporter of the FE community. I've no doubt that they will get involved again in some capacity.
When March arrives, there are two options. I can either attempt to find a new sponsor and things keep going as they are. Or we can put our collective noggins together and rethink the whole thing. On the whole, I'd say the interest in the current concept has waned. There are fewer questions being posed in interviews, and fewer votes being cast at the end of each month. I think something needs to change. This could be as simple as acknowledging that it's time is over, and quietly retiring it. Or you folks in the comments might come up with some sparks that set the whole thing on fire. The only thing that comes to mind is something that used to happen at school with 'merit marks' that you could pick up in various places around the site, and each one could be a ticket in a monthly draw. But then the music teacher gave everyone in his music club a shitload of merits at the end of the year, and spoiled it for everyone. I'm not sure how it'd work really.
I'm off to Asda to collect my shopping. If you've got any thoughts or feelings, leave me a comment. Ta

Reminds me of the house points and commendation card system we had at my old school - teachers could give points for pretty much anything a pupil did well. The points were collected by the houses each pupil was in, and there was a cup that went to the house with the most points at the end of the year.Raemondo
I'm not suggesting formalising fetch cliques into houses or anything, bit a system where Fetchies can award a point to each other for being generally excellent could be good, with some sort of prize or acknowledgement awarded periodically.
Maybe even badges for reaching certain point totals.11:24am, 24th Jan 2024 -

It would be a shame to see it completely slip away without some form of replacement, but I'm not sure what to suggest.westmoors

I thought it was waning somewhat. Still voted occasionally and asked a question occasionally, but certainly less than in the past. Well done for getting sponsors generally interested Fetch. Don't think it's fair to say it was just a popularity contest HK. I occasionally read about a Fetchie that I hadn't heard of before, or an achievement that I didn't know about and would vote for that. Don't know what a good replacement would be. House points might be fun. We could have a shout of "50 points to Gryffindor" for different achievements here or there? GHappyG(rrr)12:25pm, 24th Jan 2024

I became disillusioned with it a while ago. I'm not saying the winners were not worthy of their prize but lesser known Fetchies seemed to have little chance of winning.DoricQuine12:31pm, 24th Jan 2024

I've nominated a couple of people in the past (and one who won!), but think it's had its day. It seems that most of the 'well known' Fetchies have already won and I tend to agree with DoricQuine re: lesser known Fetchies. FWIW I don't think you need to replace it with anything.stilldreaming12:40pm, 24th Jan 2024
-
I'd like to see it continue, even if it doesn't have any prize; the award and recognition itself should be enough. I was thrilled when I won; the memory of that will outlast any prize.Sigh
I'd maybe re-think the questions part, as they are becoming predictable and stale. Maybe a set of standard simple questions, and then an open "what would you like to share" part where the winner can say whatever they want; a bit like prompting a blog from the winner, even if they just say "Thanks" as some folks may be uncomfortable with the intrusion. (And with that - maybe give the winner a chance to decline, in which case the second place gets it).
Apologies for rambling.12:54pm, 24th Jan 2024 -
It strikes me as a bit of a popularity contest and even who nominates someone could sway the vote somewhat. Maybe it could be replaced with some kind of "Hall of Fame" like they have in baseball (?) Fetchies contact you and suggest why someone should enter the hall of fame and you, Ian, decide who should be listed in there. That way it needn't be done every month, just when someone particularly deserving comes along. It also might be a good way to honour some of the lesser known Fetchies and the ones sadly no longer with us.2:52pm, 24th Jan 2024 -

Well clearly it's a flawed system as I've never won... Seriously though I do think it's tailed off somewhat in the last few months. I like the idea of some sort of recognition for 'services to Fetchies' in some way, whether the contribution is to the forums, blogs, race listings or whatever. It may need to be less structured? Perhaps people can submit a sentence of so on why someone should win and once an individual has garnered enough support they get a special mention? Counting by the man behind the curtain. No voting as such. Don't know, thinking out loud and I know I'm probably echoing at least some of what has been said above.Winniefree3:41pm, 24th Jan 2024

I was hugely chuffed to be nominated (several times) before I won, - and I too still wear my Red Venom leggings which I love. I do vote - and I have often voted for a Fetchie I don't 'know' but whose nomination seems deserving, I don't tend to ask a question these days as I struggle to think of non-mundane ones! I've always liked the diversity of choices as I think it reflects the site - so there have been winners through real running/sporting achievements, but also for all sorts of other reasons.Autumnleaves4:05pm, 24th Jan 2024

I'm on the side of it having run its course. Caveated by the fact I am not a massive user of the site anymore (*sorry*) I haven't voted, nominated or questioned for a long long time. Looking at the list of winners it's interesting that even quite recent ones are often prominent people from the early days, which fits in with observations about newer members not being able to win.Boycie
If the desire is to create something to drive engagement in a community based way, then the "merit points" idea definitely has some mileage. You are in a position to use it encourage certain behaviours if you felt it suited the site at the current time (e.g. there was a post a while ago about wanting more "running based" threads in the forum, so you could offer 2 merit points for engagement with a running thread, 1 for non-running etc. and that could change over time in response to need).
I'm sure there are partners out there who could mutually benefit from a relationship with Fetch5:44pm, 24th Jan 2024 -
I was thinking about how sad it would be to let it go but then reflected on how, from my perspective at least, the FE site has changed from what it was 10 years ago. That’s Ok, you shouldn’t halt change or progress. With that, I do think it’s time to let it go.Windsor Wool
Perhaps there’s a way to reward overall engagement instead. I always looked at MotM as a way to reward an outstanding achievement. If that achievement is posting on most threads or helping people count up to a big number then I’m sure there’s a way to recognise that in a different way.
Thanks Ian for having kept it going so long. I know I was immensely proud when nominated and won. I can still remember grinding for hours over the answers to the questions as I felt it was my duty to give back to the site in a thoughtful way 👍🏻6:21pm, 24th Jan 2024 -

I’m not sure a merit system would be very different to people doing stuff to earn badges? Also some people have far more time to engage than others so it might favour those people? I think there are many ways where people can “win” using Fetch already e.g. all the different leagues, badges, standards, games, and perhaps that’s sufficient. Otherwise maybe an annual awards night, but I think an independent panel would be needed and it’s hard to know about everyone who has done something great on the site. Anyway, easy for me to say etc, thank you to the sponsors..B.8:41am, 25th Jan 2024

MOTM was great and I was delighted to win a couple of years ago. But I think the concept may have reached the end of its natural life. I have seen this on another large community/hobby website where they ran "Geek of the Week" for over ten years and it ran out of steam eventually; it's no bad thing to be able to recognise when something has run its course.♪♫ Synge ♪♫
More and more nominees are completely unknown to me. In a way, I guess that's a good thing, but it does suggest that many of the higher-profile and busier Fetchies have already won MOTM.
I don't like the idea of merit points, as badges do that kind of thing perfectly well. I would suggest a "Blog of the Month", a "Race Result/Performance of the Month" and maybe a "parkrun of the Month" to go with the current Route Picture of the Month; together these could have a feature on the home page to showcase the best of Fetch and Fetchies, updated monthly. How you decide which was the best, I don't know. And there's no particular accolade for the person whose Blog, Performance or parkrun is selected, it would just be about celebrating the wide range of stuff we do.11:39am, 25th Jan 2024 -
Oh, and probably a Photo of the Month too? I'm trying to think of ways of having not-too-many categories, without making anyone feel completely left out.♪♫ Synge ♪♫11:44am, 25th Jan 2024

Tricky. Merit points may drive traffic and good for super users. I remember people saving their merits and collecting in one week to win the prize at school meaning those of us who were constantly mediocre seldom got recognised.2triornot2tri
I like Synge’s points - almost like the one of those newsletter lists - something I’ve read, listened to etc . Now ignoring the business of clicks it’s be a good way to highlight a great race performance, some consistent training or photo worthy of wider praise/engagement? Maybe people self submit as any data-led option will still be a popularity competition?
Anyhow not sure if added much to the debate 😂12:22pm, 25th Jan 2024 -

I wonder if a change to something that highlighted new members would be doable - maybe have a random set of badges that earn those with less than 18 months (random timeframe selected) points and when a total points is achieved they are celebrated somehow? I am in favour of something like a ‘hall of fame’ but perhaps named a ‘hall of achievement’ in which nominated individuals would lodge an account of a noteworthy achievement (e.g. a race in which a challenging goal was achieved; the completion of a challenging training programme or other challenge, etc). I enjoy reading blogs in which people describe such achievements. However a reader might miss a noteworthy blog at the time. Blog readers might nominate a particular blog reporting an achievement for inclusion in a list of achievements for consideration for adding to the ‘hall of achievement’. If five other readers supported this, the blogger and the blog would be added to the ‘hall of achievement’.Canute5:57pm, 25th Jan 2024

Change is a good thing and new ideas are a good way to move on and adapt. For me, my own thoughts are to try and recognise those that are struggling and trying to put in the miles on a very competitive application. Encourage and enable those that need that push to continue and feel they are part of a wonderful community of like minded people.
I have been inspired by the Fetch user @toks who has inspired me that plodding through the miles is about getting something done rather than aiming for great times and Personal bests. Toks has allowed me to take things at my own pace and don't be dragged into PBs and breaking records.
So I think a system where we can encourage those, like myself, that struggle and need something to push us would be superb. Or, maybe a person who inspires, helps or encourages6:19pm, 25th Jan 2024 -
Hmm, tricky one. I really enjoy reading the answers. I find it a good way of learning a bit more about Fetchies - especially when I was a new Fetchie. But I agree that only getting a handful of votes and questions suggests that the concept has done its time. Keeping the site dynamic and streamlined is important.Pothunter10:25pm, 25th Jan 2024

Can it. It’s had its day.Angus Clydesdale1:30am, 26th Jan 2024
Here's the old page for reference:
and here's the newer version:
I wanted to make the training home page more like a control panel for your training - so I've brought in some more stats and hopefully useful elements.
1) the top half of the page is mostly unchanged, except I've added a 'Log Reps' link into the 'Add Training' bar at the top of the page.
2) if you've no training plan on the go, a yellow box pops up inviting you to check out the training plans.
3) I've hopefully smartened up the 'annual targets' box, and compacted it a bit, whilst fitting in the *actual* targets you're aiming for. Do you like it?
4) Brought the distance league up a bit, and styled it the same way I'm styling all my boxes at the moment.
5) added your 12 month benchmarks. I find them a useful motivator. Good move?
6) added a 'Your Metrics' box to house weight and blood pressure. This is partly so I can remove them from the sub-menu. There's probably a bit of room to add other metrics too.
7) trimmed down the weather box and demoted it.
8) made sure all of the above has sensible and enticing information for people with no data i.e. those with new accounts, or not-signed-in users. The hope is that it showcases and guides them towards getting involved.
There's probably more I could do here, but in the spirit of iterative design, I'm sharing these amendments for your feedback.
--
And there's one other change that I'm trying.
When an anonymous (i.e. not signed in) user visit restricted pages e.g. the blogs or the training log page, they are bumped to the 'sign in' page. You have to be signed in to see them. If they have an account, they can sign in. If not, there's a link to the register page.
However... it's my theory that a large proportion of the people who are bumped to the sign in page are actually people without accounts. So it would make more sense to bump anonymous users to the 'register' page instead. There's a big green 'Already a Fetchie? Sign In' button on the register page, which is hopefully enough to catch the eye - so people *with* accounts are just one click away from signing in.
The 'sign in' page gets ~700 hits a day, whereas the 'register' page gets ~180 per day. If I swap them round, suddenly the register page gets nearly four times the amount of traffic. As far as I can see it, the trade-off is a potential extra click for people who like to sign out, which appears to be about a dozen people per day. I've made the change - let's see what happens

Picking up on FDNB's suggestion, I must say that, when looking at my own recent training, this is the view I go for most often. On a mobile I can't say I would have noticed the difference 😀. Some suggestions... The add training takes up a lot of space and with so much automation this must be wasted for many. Could it be big green + in the top header next to the faves star? When i select swim / run etc in the summary line above add training, I feel that should be applied to the whole page (with an option for all for people that love it like it is). Calendar view would be nice, though not so much for people with little or no recent entries.Nightjar1:08pm, 19th Jan 2024

In case I haven't banged on about it enough, this November I am doing Escape from Meriden: escapefrommeriden.co.uk - it's a 24 hour race where you have to get as far away from the start as you can.
If you know anything at all about me, you'll know I like playing with numbers. Having never done an ultra before, it's a great big unknown to me - so as well as looking for advice on our 'Ultra training for beginners' thread: fetcheveryone.com/forum/ultra-training-for-beginners-55137/ I've also been looking at the data to see what it can tell me. There are 17,714 ultramarathon training entries in our training log database, which should be plenty!
It's probably beyond all hope that I will manage to cover 100k in the 24 hours, but as an interesting starting point, I looked at all the 95-105km entries in our training database. There were 288, enough to get a flavour of how people tackle this distance. They ranged in time from the fastest in 6hr43, to the slowest in 36hrs.
First up, here's a simple percentile graph:
(as an example, 10% of runners (shown as 0.1 on the x-axis) complete a 100k in 10hr29 or less; 50% of runners (shown as 0.5 on the x-axis) complete a 100k in 15hr05 or less; and 90% of runners are done inside 21hr22).
At my peak, my 5k and 10k times graze the top 33% of all runners, but as the distance increases, my percentile gets worse (you can look up your own numbers here, and filter by age and gender: fetcheveryone.com/league-percentiles.php ). My half marathon time makes the top 47%; and my marathon time is top 57% at best. So when contemplating 100k, the numbers don't seem to be in my favour. But I'm here to give you the info, not whine about my chances
The second thing I looked at was the proportion of walking involved. I've been told that I will spend a great deal of time walking - but how much is a great deal? The first thought was to look at pace distributions for participants, but I think that's quite a muddy approach. All of us have a wide range of paces that we consider to be 'running', even during the course of one event; but it's more clear cut if we look at cadence. I looked at a few training entries, and found that the cadence distribution graph typically looks like this (ooh, matron!):
There's typically a nice gap between the two peaks (hey, no sniggering at the back!) which means it should be easier to separate the walking from the running. For a real-world example, have a look at Sam Jelfs' impressive training entry for EfM 2023: fetcheveryone.com/t-22463882 - scroll down to the cadence section, and in the graph marked 'cadence distribution' you'll see two distinct bumps, one corresponding to his walking, the other to his running.
Most 100k attempts are similar, with two distinct peaks - but each one is a little bit different. At this point, I should highlight the obvious, because if I don't, someone else will Every 100k is different, in terms of elevation, terrain, time of year, weather conditions etc. But if we can put that aside for now, let's see what we can find out with a broad brush
Rather than picking fixed cadence values for running and walking, and applying them to everyone, I used machine learning (something called k-means clustering if you want to look it up) to work out the position of the two peaks for each run individually. This sounds very fancy, but in our case it boils down to about a dozen lines of code. The average walking cadence was 117 strides/min; and the average running cadence was 170 strides/min - but individuals varied a bit from these. Side note: there was no obvious correlation between the walking cadence and race outcome; and only a slight tendency towards higher cadences for the faster runners.
Knowing the walking and running cadence for each participant, I was able to figure out the proportion of time they spent walking versus running. As you might expect, some of the faster people did not walk at all; whereas those at the tail spent around 70% of their time walking. Here's the graph:
So if we assume that it would take me most of 24 hours to accumulate a notional 100k, then I'm probably looking at spending around 70% of my moving time walking. That's a useful figure to keep in mind, and will encourage me to spend plenty of time on my feet this year.
To turn this into something that's hopefully useful for everyone, I've added run/walk percentage to every run and walk in your training logs. You can find it in the cadence section. Here's an example from my last marathon, where I did a fair bit of walking in the last 10k:
It might be useful if you're looking at your ultramarathons; but it can be useful if you're doing Couch to 5K too. Seeing the percentage of walking slowly drop as you make your way to your first 5k will hopefully encourage you, and maybe give you an understanding of why some days on the plan feel harder than others.
And that's it for this blog
I hope you found it useful and/or interesting. If you've got any questions, or suggestions for other stuff that I can look at (whether in ultra running or other distances; or even cycling or swimming), leave a comment.
Btw, I'll post this on LinkedIn, and the Beyond Marathon (organisers of EfM) Facebook page, and maybe a couple of other places (I'd love it if you'd share a link to it too: fetcheveryone.com/blog-share.php?id=478013 ). And if you're visiting Fetcheveryone for the first time, do stop for a look around. On the face of it, it's just a training log, likestrava (*gags*), but with two key differences. Firstly, there's just me, not a team of 200 people with hundreds of millions of dollars of venture capital; and secondly, Fetch has no paywall. Everything is free, and the site survives on voluntary donations. Those that can support me do, but everyone gets access to the best I can offer. And as you can hopefully see, I love running and stats. Please give Fetch a try, and if you like it, please tell your friends!

Very interesting, I wonder if you can account for gradient in there also, i.e. for some of my runs all the walking is when I am going up hill. I suspect in my EfM entry a lot of the walking, at least in the first say 18 hours, was when I was tramping across heavy muddy fields where running wasn't really possible.Sam Jelfs
Unless you are looking at the elite / track runners, all ultra runners spend some of the time walking. One of the events I have done a couple of times in Belgium has both a 100 mile walk and a 100 mile run, where the walkers have a maximum speed they are allowed to travel at. The winners of the walk are almost always quicker than the slowest of the run finishers.12:36pm, 17th Jan 2024 -
An unrelated thing that struck me, and it seems like it may be across the board: from the percentile tables, 5K times are soft, and particularly in the slowest third, where typically 10K times at a percentile are less than 2x 5K times.Dvorak12:39pm, 17th Jan 2024

Really interesting, thank you. For pool swims, it would be interesting for me to see %age rest vs swim time. I'd also love to know %age swim time on each stroke and average pace per stroke if you get enough information from Garmin to be able to tell stroke type.Sarbear
I'd also find it helpful if my pace was shown as average of time spent swimming, rather than total distance/time. The nature of pool training is that there's a fair amount of stop start, I'm only interested in my pace when moving.2:43pm, 17th Jan 2024 -

This is a great bit of work and love the auto %run/walk stats now. I think I put a request in for auto splits based on run/walk categorisation. The great dollop
Mainly because I'm rubbish at pace training, and also go across fields and have to walk at each gate or style, so want to know what I run at, not what I "run and go through a gate" speed on average...which is what my average pace data tells me.

Thanks for all your feedback yesterday. It's always good to get lots of points of view, because I know what works for me, but I'm not making pages for me.
I've made some amendments this morning. First, rather than having to scroll all the way through a hundred plans, I've added a select box at the top where you can choose the distance. So you can quickly hone in on whatever distance you want. I've set the default to be marathon plans, because my feeling is that there are more high quality plans at this distance than any other right now. Regarding the order that plans are displayed within each distance category - it's based on the number of upvotes each plan received.
(Perhaps when someone imports a plan, it should trigger an upvote from that person. Thoughts?)
I've also amended the site menu. I've added a 'Training Plans' link under 'Train', but kept the 'Your Plan' link, as I don't want to upset the people who use the planner. In the last 28 days, there have been 3374 visits to the training plan, but only 478 visits to the list of ready-made plans. If I simply swapped the menu link to point to the plans instead of the planner, I might get some more visitors to the plans, but could upset all the folks who use the planner. I will also look at whether I can highlight some training plans on the training home page (for the avoidance of doubt, I mean this one: fetcheveryone.com/training-home.php )
One thing today's changes mean is that the sub-menu under 'Train' is a bit busy. I have some ideas on how to simplify that a bit by removing some of the links:
1) remove 'Add Training', and encourage people to use the 'Add Training' link at the very top of the page point to the add training page (NB you can see this on mobile now, as a little running person icon. Amazingly, the link was there all the time, it just didn't have an image!)
2) remove 'Today's Feed', but instead add a short feed of recent training on the training home page . This would have a link through to the full feed, for those that are interested.
3) Consolidate the 'Weight' and 'BP' links into some sort of tracker that appears on the training home page. It could show all your current 'metrics' like a little control panel.
4) Beginners. This gets very little traffic. I'm very tempted to create a training plan that replaces this, and then hopefully when I get to the point where I can promote training plans, this can be one of them.
5) Joker. Likewise, this could be made accessible via the training plan section. It *is* a training plan after all.
That's six potential items that I could remove, with the goal of making that sub-menu clearer for everyone. Once again, do please tell me all the things that are wrong with my ideas - it's very useful

All good stuff. Not a complaint, but I've stopped tracking my weight etc on here as it involves a manual entry of data that is fed automatically from my Garmin scales to GC. One of the things about FE that makes it potentially difficult for noobs is that sometimes, really good stuff gets buried.
An example raised to me by Synge was the training plans. Not the tool that lets you pull sessions around, but the actual plans that people can import and follow. To get to them, you have to go to Train > Your Plan > Import. One little unassuming grey button on the training planner opens up a whole list of useful stuff.
Here's the page you arrive at: fetcheveryone.com/training-plan-list.php
I think Synge is right. There's a good chance that people come to FE looking for training plans - so why not prioritise the ready-made plans, rather than leading with the blank canvas of the training planner?
In order to ready-up the training plan list for being shoved under the noses of unsuspecting noobs, I've done a bit of cosmetic stuff today. Here's the old 'list' page:
and here's the new version:
I've simplified the intro text; removed the filter (instead sorting the plans by distance); and moved the 'your plans' bit behind a button. I've removed what I consider to be a lot of redundant information from the listings, instead letting the titles speak for themselves. The plans are sorted by distance, with subheadings - and there aren't too many to scroll through - so the hope is that you can quickly get to the plans you want without too much faff.
When you click a plan to view it, I've made some minor changes. Here's the old version:
and here's the new one:
Mainly, it's just tidying up of the layout, but I've also added a vote counter (do please vote for good plans!), and carved out the suggested action ("import plan") to hopefully make it clearer what the user can do next.
But I've also made some SEO changes here. Users don't have to be logged in to see these plans, which means they can be indexed by search engines. And a few changes to the titling (that hopefully don't do any harm to your experience) will give search engines a clearer idea of what's on the page. For example, the main heading on the marathon plan was previously "P&D 2nd Edition 18week 35-55 miles". And now it's 'Marathon Training Plan', with the detail as a sub-heading. Little changes like this improve your search ratings, I've discovered. Getting on the first page of Google for a search term like that is very difficult, as it's a congested page. But I can try.
Now that these pages are looking a bit smarter, I can rearrange things to give them a bit more visibility. Synge suggested making them accessible on the home page, but for now I'm a bit reluctant. I've only just simplified it, with the goal of making it easier for noobs to see what's on offer - so I don't want to start piling the content back in. The evidence so far is that the simplified home page is a bit friendlier. In January 2023 there were 176 signups to FE. So far in the first 15 days of January 2024 there have been 111, so we're maybe on target for ~220 signups in the month. Not world-beating just yet, but improvement is improvement.
However, I reckon I can easily make some space on the 'Train' page. It's the ideal place for it. So my next job is to pull that about a bit. Feel free to shout things at this point

I'm wondering if the 'your plan' tab would be better replaced by 'plans' so a user can access them all first (that may in effect be what happens). Over Christmas, during our endless daytime gorging on cheese and crackers, the subject of butter maintenance came up. The feeling among some guests was that there was a right and a wrong way to use up your butter. The butter under investigation had a big angry divot out of the middle, which would eventually erode, leading to the formation of four corner stacks.
This criticism stinging in my ears, I have set out to do better. New Year, New Butter. Thus far, I've achieved an almost uniform attrition, with some pleasant elongated crenellations caused by the serrated edge of my knife. I've also taken great care to keep the invasion of crumbs to a minimum.

Sort of related, I once heard the phone go at 2-3 in the morning (in the days of a corded phone downstairs) on answering I heard “is that the butter residence?”, being a bit of a fog I said “no”. [I was asked this in the forum, but I thought it'd be useful to share, just in case you are asked "does it have an app?" when you are promoting FE out in the wild].
Fetch doesn't have an app. Time is the main constraint because I'm the only person here. It'd be necessary to build and maintain two apps - one for Apple and another for Android. Both would require me to work with languages and platforms that I'm not exactly familiar with.
There are then two options:
1) Make something that replicates some/all the functionality of the website. I have made a conscious decision not to do this, preferring instead to make the site mobile friendly. This means I have just one version of everything to maintain. For those who like having a big button on their home screen to launch their training log, it's possible to use the 'Add to Home Screen' option when viewing the site (on iPhone, it's in the "arrow leaving rectangle" menu). This makes it *look* like an app, which pleases some folks.
2) Make an app that just captures GPS traces. I tried this for a while, and whilst it worked (with some bugs) it was extremely simple and lacking in features compared to various other GPS tracking apps already on the market. Adding and maintaining all these features (twice!) would take a great deal of effort. Instead, I suggest that people use the Wahoo app, as their GPS tracking app can be set up to automatically export runs, walks etc to Fetcheveryone. Another factor here is that folks who have been running for a reasonable amount of time tend to have a GPS watch, which makes using an app unnecessary.

You also don’t have to jump through all the hoops that Apple, at least, demand of people to get in the App Store. Bet it’s far from free too. I use the site 99% of the time on mobile and I don’t think you would get any improvement with an app, probably the reverse as you end up having to simplify it for all the reasons above. I agree that as a mobile friendly website it works well, there is no need to have an app to replicate that.roberton
Apps are amazing but they come into their own when they do things a different way or, even more so, do something different. There’s no need to make an app of a website, so to speak.
When ideas were being bandied around for a mobile app, there was lots of stuff around the games, which makes sense. You could potentially have aids to a game during your run/walk/ride etc, in a way that you can’t do with a separated, sequential system. You could have completely new experiences too. But that’s different than building an app for what we have now!

I've been chatting to a Fetchie recently about the design of the home page. I'll let him name himself if he wants, in case he's shy, but as per the blog title it's been really useful.
One difficulty which I have to overcome when assessing the site is the fact that I know where everything is. If you're a regular reader, you probably know where to find most things you need too. But in order to make the site newbie friendly, I have to make sure it's as easy to use for the folks who don't know where everything is; and don't know that there are some solid gold training threads, in amongst the ones dedicated to counting, word games etc.
A visitor to our home page sees (amongst other things) seven forum threads. It's an opportunity to show that visitor just what Fetch can offer. Until just now, this would be the seven most recently active threads. Each carries a label that says "20 seconds ago", "3 minutes ago" etc - and I felt that it was a good way of showing that the site is active and dynamic.
BUT if you're coming here because you've heard that it's a great training resource, will you be put off if most of those threads are dedicated to non-running, non-training things? Perhaps.
So I've made an amendment, and let's see how we go. Using the tags applied to threads by our lovely tag team, I've filtered the list on the home page to show only the most recent threads that feature any of the following tags: "running", "training", "health", "trail", "triathlon", "swimming", "cycling", "strength", "yoga". This produces a good list of very useful threads, and they're still pretty active (all the top 7 that this produces have been posted on in the last 40 mins).
Those of you for whom Change Is Not Good can also find a button just underneath the list of threads on the home page. This allows you to switch back to "Show recent threads instead", which will return the usual list of latest postings. But for new users, and those exploring the site, and even for search engines looking for key phrases on our home page, this is hopefully a better situation.
What do you think?
And if you can spare 20 mins, try logging out (or using an incognito/private window) to see what the site looks like to a newbie visitor. I'd love to hear your feedback.

Definte improvement. However I think JCB's comment about "idiots" may have been serious. Yes, my comment about "idiots" was serious. At first glance it appears humorous. On reflection though, and this may be a cultural thing, but it might be better to avoid. Anyway, Happy New Year everyone!
Our annus horribilis is over. On Sunday just before midnight we looked into each others eyes and counted down the last seconds of a year with several misfortunes. A year that actually started going wrong in December 2022 when I got a urine infection, we both got COVID, and both had to miss our family Christmas. The first six months of 2023 were actually ok after that. We did lots of swimming in build-up for the Big Welsh Swim, and after a slow January for me (41 miles, my lowest month of the year), my running picked up nicely. Then in July, the car ate its own engine and cost us nearly £7K to repair, Katie lost her step-mum and aunt (the former suddenly, the latter after a long and difficult decline), and then we had to have her dog of 14.5 years put down. And of course, there was the house flood, and the newly-repaired car was written off as a result.
But, in the Spirito De Binto, IT WAS NOT ALL BAD!
I swam further than I ever thought possible at the BWS. And after a post-COVID take-it-very-easy January, I had a really consistent year of running, never going more than six days without a run. I ended the year on 964 miles, second only to the round 1000 I managed in 2018 when training for Abingdon Marathon. To get that close to a record without the help of a long run schedule feels like a victory for Getting Out There. It feels like a good starting base to build some Escape from Meriden training. My plan there is to train as though my boy is gonna be too busy having fun at university to join me. At the moment he is keen, excited even, but not likely to do much training. But he's young, and full of hwyl, so we'll see what happens.
There was one last piece of misfortune offered up by 2023 - I got a tiny splash of water on the trackpad of my ancient (2012) Macbook Pro - and whether a cause or coincidence, the mouse pointer became impossible to control. Luckily, I was able to plug in an external mouse, and then was very pleased to find that I could order a replacement trackpad online. £30 and about a dozen tiny screws later, my Mac is as good as new. This is now the fourth replacement part (a couple of new batteries, an SSD to replace the old HDD, and a replacement drive cable being the other items). It is totally joyful to be able to make a small repair to something. These days so many things have to be either thrown out, or paid-through-the-nose for manufacturer-only replacements. At some point I will run into something I can't fix easily, but not today!
Right then. Let's get busy.

Comments
It’s been a long road back from various injuries, ailments and CBAness. I’m a minute per mile slower and often don’t enjoy running like I used to but… one step at a time.
Oh well, good enough for my personal target which is what matters!
