I've got to the point where I'm almost ready to ditch the 'Edit' screen on training entries. Since I blogged about removing it a few weeks ago, I've integrated some more stuff into the 'View' screen. Of particular recent note:
1) I've made it as easy as I can to modify and view your kit. If you've no kit assigned to a training entry, an 'Add Kit...' button appears when you view your training entry. Clicking this opens up a list of your available items, which you can click to assign to the training entry. And similarly, if you HAVE assigned a bit of kit, this appears as a clickable thing, and clicking it opens up the list. The list shows your mileages in each piece of kit - and the full kit bag is just one further click away.
2) assigning routes. Many of you would use the edit screen to match the training entry to one of your saved routes. I've tried to automate that process now, to save you the bother. When a training entry arrives in the system, it automatically checks all of your routes to find the closest match. If that match is a STRONG one i.e. a close distance match, and looks about the same, then the route and training entry are automatically linked.
I have gone back through the training log and applied this logic, so you might find that many of your training entries are connected to a route. Equally, when you save a new route, the system will automatically tie it to any relevant training entries. And when viewing a route that you've done many times, you'll find a list below the elevation profile, showing links to all the training entries that match the route. It HAS inevitably connected some false positives, particularly where there are small variations in your routes. If you view a training entry that is connected to a route, and look at the map, there's an 'Unlink' button to detach it from the route. This doesn't delete your training map, nor does it delete the route - it just disconnects the two. Get it?
3) A few people were a bit unsure as to whether the stuff they were typing on the view screen was getting sent to the server. I'd removed the 'Update' button from the notes field. Instead, the page waits until you've stopped typing for a few seconds, and when it detects that, it will AUTOMATICALLY update the server. But... to give you a bit of reassurance, there's a wee message that pops up in the middle of the screen saying something like 'Saving your changes...'. Doesn't that just make you feel lovely inside? Moreso?
And that's about it.
I have put an enormous note on the edit screen. And I've put another pop up note when you click 'Edit' from the view screen, which points out that you can probably do your edits without it. Despite all this, I'm still seeing a few people going to the edit screen If this is you, please let me know why. You don't have to put it in a comment, you can just whisper it to me if you like.

Thanks to everyone who helped me slim down my kit cupboard yesterday. There are still a few items left - see previous blog.

I've had a long-overdue sort through of all the spare bits of Fetch kit that I've got stored in my cupboard. All of the following are new items, although a few bits here and there have been sent out, didn't quite fit, and came straight back.
*I've priced the rainbow stuff pretty cheaply, because at the time there were a few issues around sizing. The cut was a little bit smaller than usual. So if you fancy something from the rainbow kit, it's probably best to go up a size.

Every year we have a virtual coming together to remember the Fetchies who are no longer with us. It is a small list, thankfully - but every year a few more names are added. This year we lost carryonregardless, who died very suddenly after the London Marathon. And our wonderful Stevce, who died after a long duel with cancer. Even in his last blog, he was blasting out Bee Gees songs, and showing great spirit in the face of so many difficulties.
So every year, we spend a bit of time honouring them all with a community challenge. It's named after Doctor K, a Fetchie who lived with pancreatic cancer and did so with great dignity. He was a big fan of parkrun, so we always host the challenge on a Saturday morning (although you don't have to do it at a parkrun, nor do you have to restrict yourself to running just 5k). This year it's on OCTOBER 7TH.
There's more info here:

It would be great to see as many of you as possible joining in. Please leave a comment or upvote this blog to help make sure it gets in front of as many Fetchies as possible. Thank you.

If you click any training entry in your log to view it, you might notice that there are load more things that you can edit on the 'view' now, without having to go into an 'edit' screen. You can change:
1) category
2) surface
3) hilliness
4) distance
5) units
6) time taken
7) state of mind
8) temperature
9) windiness
10) precipitation
and then a wee bit further down the page
11) notes
12) splits
I've made all of these so that you don't have to press an 'update' button. The changes should automatically be sent to the server. In the case of select boxes this is pretty simple - if there's a change, the server gets notified straight away. For text boxes, it's a little bit more complicated, because every key stroke is a change in theory. What happens here is that the page is waiting for you to STOP typing. When there's no sign of typing for a couple of seconds, it notifies the server with the latest contents of the text box.
As I've added more of these to the 'view' screen, I was expecting to see a drop off in use of the 'edit' screen. But it seems that some of you are still keen on clicking that 'edit' button.
There are still a few things that you can only do on the 'edit' screen, it's true. A few of which I still want to transfer to the 'view' screen. But I also wonder whether clicking the edit button is a muscle memory thing. I've tried to engage with the folks on that edit screen, which hopefully gets the message across - but hopefully most of the editables are now achievable without visiting it.
Let me know if you still use it. NB if you've already been in touch, I have made notes, so there's no need to say again
Also, it was Roald Dahl day yesterday. Which Dahl villain are you? I was grandma from George's Marvellous Medicine. As Dahl put it, "George couldn’t help disliking Grandma. She was a selfish grumpy old woman."

I’ve not used the edit screen for a little while and do like the new fields available on the view screen. Just some notes: 1. It’s probably quite easy to accidentally click and change something and choose an option (mostly on mobile I would think). 2. I’ve found in the past the view screen takes a lot longer to load than the edit screen, so I’ve often wanted to just go to the edit screen when making changes to a training entry. 3. Having server round trips, can be discombobulating when just making a small change that might not be the only one you want to make. 4. Slow connections/poor connectivity will be impacted.JCB
I’ve moved away from doing too much in my training entries, but used to be a bit obsessive about setting everything right. Hence I don’t use edit as much as previously.3:50pm, 14th Sep 2023 -

I like the new approach. I tended not to bother editing apart from run type, but now I also update surface, weather and have started recording shoes - just because it's so much easierThorntonRunner5:36pm, 14th Sep 2023

All the drop downs make it hard to see the data. Can't see distance and time at a glance, I know that they're right there but I find I've got to kind of search for it. (Does anyone need to edit distance and time on an imported run?)RooA
I like the principle of no seperate edit screen... but all the white boxes and drop down arrows are kind of messy and the actual data seems lost and somehow uncertain or temporary. Perhaps more a presentation thing than function thing?
Sorry. I'm always complaining about change. 😆 I hate change.5:38pm, 14th Sep 2023 -

Why did you want to get rid of the edit screen though? On RooA's point, I'll edit distance on imported runs, because sometimes the gps is plain wrong. And if I've run a set distance eg parkrun or race, I'll change it to that, unless there's a compelling reason to think the stated distance is incorrect.Dvorak7:35pm, 14th Sep 2023

I'll hold my hands up - it's me using the edit screen! I've always preferred it to the 'other' screen and I still do...so I keep clicking into it. For instance the bit where you can specify the temp, precipitation, state of mind etc is much easier on the edit screen because it's got words on it - the pictures on the other screen make me really have to think about which one is which.Pegg
And on the edit screen it's all in one place. The edit screen has it all broken up into separate segments which my brain finds messy.
And it bugs me a bit that there isn't a save button on the other screen. I don't trust that it'll save it by itself. Just like Office 365 where I still press CTRL+S every few minutes even though it's supposed to save to the cloud by itself.
The only time I've ever looked into the other screen was to look at a route map. So I guess it's going to take me a while to adjust...please don't hate me!8:11pm, 14th Sep 2023 -
I was going to mention the Baltic default on the manual entry screen! I've only just noticed that I can choose indoor as a surface though...Autumnleaves8:58pm, 14th Sep 2023

Last month, EvilPixie set up a series of monthly 5k virtual challenges. You can find them in the race finder on the 1st of each month, in the virtual category. It's a simple idea - just record your best 5k from the month.
My approach is to use the race to fill in my best *so far* for the month. Yes, I can just look at my benchmarks for this:
fetcheveryone.com/benchmark.php?distance=5k&category=R&startdate=2023-08-08
but there's something about it being listed against a race that encourages me to try a little bit harder.
I've done virtually zero speed training in the last 12 months. That all stopped when I fell off a paddle board and twisted my knee last July. I've just been happy to be running without any major aches. Minor ones, obvs, but who doesn't these days?
My best in August was 26:43. It was a cautious attempt because of the lack of fast stuff. All I did was aim for a little bit quicker than my normal running speed, with a 'see what happens' view. It went pretty well, and it came with a big dose of yayyyy that you only get after pushing yourself a bit.
That's 8:36/mile, so now that we're into September, I set out to see if I could get inside that today.
After a mile warm up, I got a bit of a trot on, and went through the first effort mile in 8:26. Excellent. Ten seconds inside the required pace - so just keep it up, no drama. I tried carrying on at the same effort level, but I must have been more warmed up or something, because the second effort mile was a rather nice 8:03. I did a 180 degree turn on the beep, and my watch always seems to punish me for stuff like this - telling me I was suddenly 9 min/miling. So I dug in for the last mile, which was tough, but ended up being a spiffing 7:56. I did frequently look at my watch to see the mile accumulating, but deliberately underestimated what I would see when I looked - so that each time I got a nice little surprise. That's a handy trick With 0.1 miles to go, I flung everything at it (whilst simultaneously dealing with my guts, who were cheering me on very loudly), and ended up with a total benchmark figure of 25:12
My lively guts (sorry for the detail) meant I had a little sit down on a bench to think about things for a minute And I chose to walk the rest of the way home (about a mile and a half) so as to avoid upsetting the applecart But overall I was a very happy applecart. Hopefully I can get a sub-25 later on this month. My best for the year so far is 24:38 on the lovely flat Bristol to Bath cycle path, so that's a nice target. I'm quite a way off last year's 22:22, but that was set at a parkrun, with lots of people to chase down. Let's see what happens.
Here's the September race, if you'd like to join in. Just add it to your race list, and keep hacking away at your time:

19 years ago today I ran my first ever race - the Cardiff 10K! Here's the only picture of me from the day - I'm the one in the yellow vest. The picture wasn't taken by my family - but by another Fetchie! Perhaps the first example of collaboration and friendship in what is now a long and largely happy history.
It was a very special race for me as a proud Welshman, finishing in the Millennium Stadium. At the time I wrote about how it felt to run down the tunnel and around the edge of the pitch - it felt as though the floor had been electrified. It's probably no coincidence that we won the Grand Slam just a few months later
I've also long-since adopted today as the official birthdate of Fetcheveryone. I'd owned the domain name for several years, but that's another story. I posted a copy of the results from the 10k on the site, and around about that time I started uploading a few race pictures. Things just grew from there.
And so the countdown is on to our 20th anniversary in September 2024 I imagine there'll be a bit of merch - and it'd be rude not to do a mug, as it'd be our china anniversary! Following a blog from a month or so back, I hopefully have a few Fetchies willing to put forward a design for anniversary shirts and vests. And who knows, perhaps we'll go for a run, or failing that I might just book a table at the pub for the evening
All that remains today is to say a big thank you to everyone who has been part of the story. People come and go - that's to be expected. But (I can't resist a statistic), 118 of the first 1000 people to sign up to the site have checked in at some point in the last year. Thank you for putting your faith in the site; thank you for all your support, encouragement, and patience; and for everything you have brought with you. You have totally changed my life.
When I got up, and without realising the date, I was in two minds about whether to go out and run today. But given I've just gushed out all of the above, it'd be rude not to! See you in a bit.

Happy birthday Fetheveryone. I'd be up for a virtual race with you all on this side of the planet. I reckon a special 20th anniversary medal as well. (Give people a choice of 20 minutes, 20km, 20 miles or 20 hours for those hardcore ultra nutters, has to be done really). I'd offer to help this side, but there's only a few of us in this country that I'm aware of. MarkMark Jingle All The Way, J 🇳🇿9:52am, 5th Sep 2023

This is a great site, and just keeps getting better. Some of it down to the users, suggesting stuff, blog and forum content etc. But mostly, overwhelmingly mostly, because of the "man behind the curtain". Please, keep it up. This site is a legacy to your attitude and knowledge, and long may it remain so. Thank you so very much. Ever since I moved all your training photos across to your galleries, I've had a few people get in touch to say "I don't recognise that picture. Is it really mine?". So now, when a picture is connected to a training entry or race, it shows up in some green buttons above the pic. For example, I've connected this pic to the corresponding training entry, and to the corresponding event. See the green buttons?

It is *scorchio* here at Fetch HQ. I've just had to stop for a lolly break, and some ginger ale with ice in it. The trouble is that the sun hits the windows of my garden office like an angry b*****d after about 2pm. Katie had the bright idea of moving our gazebo over to block it. Perhaps too late to have an impact today, but I am hopeful that it may help tomorrow.
We bought a new lamp yesterday, and I spotted this on the packaging (directing me to the allen key) which made me smile:

There Are Some Really Sexy Girls On Fetch
Comments
Personally, I have one set of trainers set up as my default pair, and they're automatically added to new runs as soon as the run is created.
My run this morning was a saved route except I walked the first bit before starting the Garmin because it was being slow on the uptake finding a GPS lock. So when the run arrived in Fetch it was not a close enough match to be assigned to my saved route.
@Fitz - I am still working on that bit - my plan is to add another button that will open a little popup with a list of routes that are approximate matches to the distance.
@ZORBAX65 - I will try to get an editable 'Three things you saw today' added to the view screen.
I also miss the prompts - State of mind, Precipitation, Wind, Temp - the icons are not obvious enough for me.
Trim i get, but change the actual recorded time/distance?
