Just in case

5:32pm, 30 Aug 2023
I've just had someone asking where the new pics had come from in his picture gallery... so I thought I'd bash out a very quick blog in case it saves someone else the worry.

Feature Request 1312 wanted a way to add photos to your training log by selecting them from those already uploaded to your gallery. I've amended all training entries, so that you can now add multiple photos to any given training entry. And I've copied across ~11,000 images from the old system - so these are ones that you've added to your training entries in the past.

Bit rushed, as it's tea time - but that's where the extra pics come from :-)

  • Ah. Is this why every time I copy and paste an OTDIFH (text)update from OneNote it also appears as a jape egg in my gallerarry? Not a big fan of that, me.

  • I often add photos to my training, just for the lolz. Now I have millions of images in my personal gallery. I'm not sure how to process this, since they're not linked back to any particular training entry.

However, ZORBAX65, whose training I often look at just because they post some really great photos :-) , has a million million new photos!

Weekly Total Hours

10:20am, 30 Aug 2023
I thought this one was worth a shout out beyond those that voted for the feature request.

On the training home page, there's a set of summary graphs e.g.:

If you've never played around with these, the default is just a column chart showing your weekly running mileage. But if you click the 'Settings' button in the top-right corner of the graph, there are ***85*** to choose from. Back on the training home page, you can cycle through your chosen graphs using the 'Prev' and 'Next' buttons.

One of the available graphs is 'Weekly Total Hours', which shows a summary of all the time you've spent running, cycling, swimming, walking and cross-training. Up until just now, it just had simple purple bars. But feature request 1451 asked for these purple bars to be broken down to show the individual figures for run, bike, swim, walk and cross-train. It sounded good, and had a decent chunk of votes behind it, so I did it. Here's mine, as an example:

I'm quite pleased that, since having Covid at the start of the year, I've logged at least two hours of something or other every week since then - and now I can see the breakdown.

That also means that 1146 (69%) of the 1659 feature requests raised have now been resolved. If you haven't had a look at them before, I encourage you to do so. Each user can vote in favour of up to 150 requests*, and there are currently 513 live ones to choose from. Or you can add your own request!

I hope you have a nice day. Aside from working, and maybe a run, I am facing the prospect of making a fifth call to the Air India customer service people to chase a refund on some flights we booked before the car ate our money. But that's another story.

*about a half dozen of you have exceeded that limit [before I put it in place], so you won't be able to add any yes votes until you undo some of your existing yes votes.

Dim Brys Dim Chwys

12:04pm, 29 Aug 2023
Did you have a nice day yesterday?

We got to Box End for a swim in the morning. It was my second swim of the week, the first of which was my first since the Big Welsh Swim at the start of July. It took a few weeks for my hands to feel normal again after that - and then one thing and another has conspired against me. The weed had grown up a lot since my last visit, and I've slowed up a bit - but still had an enjoyable three laps for a 1.5 mile swim.

We had some food shopping coming late afternoon, so we got back from the swim and went out with the dog. Katie wanted to pick a few apples from the community orchard for cooking with. From there we took a walk through the woods, and down to investigate the recently ploughed field. I ran to it last week, and did an abrupt 180 because it was too churned up to run. It was just about ok to walk on, and hopefully the path will find itself in the coming weeks. The dog had a nice time sticking his nose everywhere, and running about like a loon.

At the top of the field we found a whole hedgerow of blackberries of varying quality from a little too sharp to really quite smushy - but there were a few that hit the sweet spot.

The dog is his own worst enemy sometimes, and careered about until he got hot. So he got a quick drink from Katie. I got laughed at for saying "milking him like a lamb". Wrong in so many ways, but I know what I meant :-)

Stephen turned his nose up at a bowl of fresh water left out on the street shortly after this. He's funny like that - but I think he just wants to see it moving so he knows it's fresh. But why his amazing nose can't tell him that, I don't know. Maybe it's the amount of crap he eats. Luckily for him, we found a leaky water main when we got back to the village, and he helped himself.

After a sit down, we spent a bit of time pulling weeds up in the front garden. It's 90% gravel, but infiltrated by various stuff. Most of it was quite satisfying - if you yanked it right, all the roots would come up whole.

Then we had some sofa time, with some 0% Guinness for me. To my 8-bit taste buds, it tastes exactly like the 'real' thing, and is my new favourite AF option. Stephen came up for some attention, and we discovered the billion little seeds (the round ones, known in our house as 'garden balls') nestled in his fur. With a bit of fuss, we managed to remove most of them, although he's a super furry animal at the moment.

Aside from eating, the rest of the evening was spent lazing in front of the telly watching the US version of Alone on C4. The premise is great. Ten people are dropped off in various isolated spots near Great Slave Lake in rural Canada. They are not in communication with each other, or with anyone at all - except for a 'tap out' emergency phone. Each person has to survive off the land for as long as they can. Building shelters, making fire, catching food, staying warm, surviving interest from wild animals, and dealing with the solitude. Series 1 of a UK version is airing right now - but the US version is already 9 series deep - and it is *so* much better. The UK folks seem like real amateurs, whereas the US participants have loads of interesting survival skills. One out of one Fetch's recommend it.

I hope you had a nice day too.

All hail our robot overlords!

4:12pm, 21 Aug 2023
On Friday I sent out my monthly list of site updates, coupled with my usual rant about something-or-other. This month it was email, and the way in which big email providers decide on your behalf what to deliver.

If you've signed up to receive emails from me, but never receive them, this could well be the issue. You can check your settings here: fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-email.php

If that first box is ticked, you should have received an email from me on Friday. If you didn't, there's every chance that your email service provider decided not to deliver it to you. If that does apply to you, do please just drop me a line via ian@fetcheveryone.com - all you need do is say hello, or something like that. This simple act shows your email provider that my email address is one that you trust, and should hopefully ensure better deliverability next time round.

Anyway... if you want to read the whole rant, here it is:

--

This morning I read about an app in New Zealand that generates recipes to help use up leftovers. It willingly suggested tempting treats such as “ant-poison and glue sandwiches” and “fresh breath” bleach mocktails.

As a Fetcheveryone user, you already make use of algorithms that help guide your choices. Calculators based on real data will suggest what time you should aim for in your marathon. And games and challenges based on nothing but numbers and code nudge you to run more, or in certain places. But if you ever feel that the website has become self-aware, please let me know, and I will slow it up with a few mocktails.

Every day there's a news story about AI as we delegate more of our decisions and thoughts to automated processes. And in many ways I'm all for it! Yes sure, at some point the machines may achieve genuine consciousness and decide to wipe us all out. But it'd probably be for the best.

Putting aside the end of all human life, it's tiresome to be on the wrong side of an algorithm. But this very email is at the mercy of one!

I play by the rules. When you joined Fetcheveryone, you clicked a checkbox to accept emails from me. Yet I still get reports from people who tell me they do not receive my emails.

If you don't mind, I'll explain briefly how it works, and how you can help with one simple action to overthrow our robot overlords.

Big email providers like Google, Microsoft etc account for the vast majority of registered email addresses. And their algorithms decide which emails to deliver. By that, I don't mean “put in your spam folder”, I mean that they are quietly torn up without ever reaching you.

When a few thousand emails from ian@fetcheveryone.com turn up, they look at my reputation. When I last sent a batch of messages, how many recipients acted on the content? Did many people click the links? Did people reply? If the answer is “not many really”, the algorithm concludes that these new emails are not worth it, and deletes them before you get a chance to decide for yourself. It's clever really. An algorithm that makes use of thousands of human judgements to save one human the bother.

So let's try a little experiment today. Before you read on, please hit reply. Take the opportunity to ask me a question about the site; or to give me feedback about something you like or dislike. Or just say hello. Hopefully this will give me a gold star from the electronic gods, although they are probably reading this and laughing.

--

Still reading? Good. Don't forget that if you're signed up, but didn't get it, to drop me an email via ian@fetcheveryone.com

I hope you're having a good day. The direct sun is making the Fetch Office pretty warm right now, but I've kicked my Crocs off, and that's helped a wee bit. A lolly would help, I'm sure.

Your local parkrun

5:27pm, 17 Aug 2023
In the comments on yesterday's blog, Fragile Do Not Bend asked which parkrun had the highest hillscore. I guess not all of them are listed, so you may well know a hillier one (and if so, do please map it out and save it as a route), but here are some I found:

"Dollar Glen parkrun" - ascent 450m, hill score 44.
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1830166
I can't find any actual parkrun by this name - so I don't know if it's one that maybe used to be, or one that's in the pipeline. Anyway, it's hilly!

Whinlater Forest parkrun - ascent 313m, hill score 28.
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1788792

Durlston parkrun - ascent 256m, hill score 23.
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1848483

--

But the reason for this blog is to point you at a new thing on your user profile. There's a section titled 'My parkrun' where you can specify your local event. And once you do so, it turns into a link that contains reviews and (where available) route information. There's also a section on this page where you can find the Fetchies who have listed this as their local.

Here's an example review page:

fetcheveryone.com/parkrun-review.php?prid=1842

And here's a link to your user profile so you can set up your local parkrun, if you like:

fetcheveryone.com/userprofile.php

I am literally AND literally cooking right now, so that's me signing off for the day. TTFN.

  • Nice! Among my friends, Whinlatter is regarded as the hilliest one. I have done it pushing my son in a running buggy. It is hilly but good.
Dollar Glen may simply be someone's personal parkrun; for 'freerunning' possible. However, freedom runs do need to be run on official courses.
I searched on the parkrun website, and found no parkrun called Dollar Glen. There is a place called Dollar in Scotland, but it has no parkrun. The nearest parkrun is the University of Stirling parkrun.

Oh and and loads of new feature ideas that I'll request, off the back of the ones you've just done e.g. paste in to forum chats = excellent, but then, can we have paste into blog too and route and training? And "my parkrun" is great, but can you put core team, RD, just a runner etc. And what about having our stats of number of runs there and logging volunteering etc. Incoming...! • Hahaha! The "Dollar Glen parkrun" is nothing more than a name. Clearly an ironic sense of humour from 57.5DOP at getting a 5k run that has 500 metres of elevation - a "what if" for a truly extreme parkrun in some virtual world. Although the "Dollar Hill Race" follows that insane ascent up Saddle Hill as a warm-up. Dollar has no parkrun, but we have lots of other local ones (I've worked in Dollar for almost 30 years!)

  • I've mapped Flatts Lane (https://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1802882), is pretty hilly, but has a HS of only 9, which seems a bit low to me (but that *may* be because my watch has really odd ideas about how elevation works).

There used to be a list somewhere of "parkruns by total ascent", and FL was in the top 7 or so? Not as much ascent as (e.g.) Whinlatter (which was first on that list) - but personally I FL is one one of the hardest I've done, because the climbs.
The route page says 118m of ascent - which seems a bit on the low side to me, but again, that may be my watch.

Is it, perhaps, something to do with it being a 2 lapper? (Queen Elizabeth is another one that feels pretty hilly to me but has a HS of 9). Or is it just that I don't understand how HS works?

Fool on the hill

4:35pm, 16 Aug 2023
I've been working through the code that handles routes, so that they now use the same hill score system as in the training log. You can see your own routes here, along with a HS (hillscore) column:

fetcheveryone.com/routes-private.php

Over in your training log, I've also made your HS values available in the list view (in the 'terrain' tab):

fetcheveryone.com/training.php?view=terrain

You can also sort your training entries by clicking on the column header. I found it very handy to filter my log to show my bike rides, add a "minimum distance of 20 miles" filter, and sort by hill score. The result is a list of my long routes, sorted by hilliness - so if I want a flat one, I know which route to replicate.

Back in the 'routes' section of the site, I've also added a hill score filter to the page where you can search for public routes:

fetcheveryone.com/routes-public.php

If you want to err on the side of flatter routes, set a low max, and if you prefer it lumpy, set a low minimum.

Which begs the question: "what is a high hill score?" There are two ways of looking at it. Our hill score is just a summation of all the hills on your route. So if you ran up Snowdon and back down, then ran around the car park at the bottom for an hour, you'd get the same hill score as if you'd just run up Snowdon and stopped at the top. I think this is a fair way of looking at it. The hill score lets you know how much hill action you're gonna get. But you could take it a step further, and divide the hill score by the distance of the run. This would give you an idea of what proportion of your run was taken up with running uphill. In our example, the 'up+down+carpark' would score much less than the simple 'up'.

But I've stuck with the simpler 'summation' score. It still gives you a clear estimate of how much uphill you're facing, and avoids hiding any nasty surprises caused by an averaged-out mountain in the middle of an otherwise pancake flat run.

So (nss) given our definition, which are the hilliest routes?

There are 568,313 routes in our database. Of these, just over 70% have a hill score of zero. Our definition of what constitutes a hill is "a climb of at least 10 metres", so these are not totally flat - just too flat to cause a fuss. Try telling me that next time I have to run over a motorway bridge.

Bear in mind that our definition means that longer routes will have more opportunity to encounter hills and raise their hill score. Let's look at short routes (less than five miles). The majority (91%) have a hill score of less than 4 or less, but there are some absolute snorters. Here are the top five public ones, if you want to go sightseeing:

fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=384699 Mont Blanc (4.3mi) HILLSCORE = 139
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1692529 Kawana parkrun (3.1mi) HILLSCORE = 137
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=564895 Bordier Hut to Mischable hut (5.0mi) HILLSCORE = 127
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=916817 The Lagginghorn from the Weissmies Hut (4.3mi) HILLSCORE = 122
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1845688 Barranco Del Infierno (4.3mi) HILLSCORE = 117

I have to say, I am extremely suspicious of the second one on that list - it looks like it's along a beach front, and the leading runner most recently did 17:30. Perhaps it's owner Dibble can tell us what running the event was like. Obviously we're at the mercy of the accuracy of elevation data here, so I guess the lookup service has served up some batcrap.

Anyway... the point is that if you're scoring more than a 4 for your five mile route, you're allowed to say it's hilly :-)

Here's another quick list - the highest hill scores among public roughly-half-marathon distance routes:

fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1818581 Alta via day 1 (13.04mi) HILLSCORE = 153
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=41602 Castleton Half Marathon (13.17mi) HILLSCORE = 120
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1851459 Trionium Midsummer Munro (13.03mi) HILLSCORE = 96
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=25861 Steyning Stinger Half 2008 (13.18mi) HILLSCORE = 88
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1819071 TMB Col de Voza-Les Contamines (13.05mi) HILLSCORE = 86

I'll let you sort the wheat from the chaff there :-)

Here's the list of public hilly marathon routes:

fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1739932 Brixen Dolomiten Marathon 2015 (26.24mi) HILLSCORE = 243
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1400443 Brixen Marathon altered route (0.8 mi short on Garmin, is actual (26.20mi) HILLSCORE = 182

See how you get on with all that, and whether you think any of these would make good searchable tables etc, or whether you'd like to see the data put to some other good use.

I did a 27 mile bike ride today, and got a HS of 32. fetcheveryone.com/t-22163907 That puts it in the 76th percentile of routes of that distance. This means I am signing off to go find a Chocolate Digestive.

  • Very good. I suspect most of my runs ought to have a "very low" HS, but I do see some stonking anomalies in the GPS data. As you said, "we're at the mercy of the accuracy of elevation data here, so I guess the lookup service has served up some batcrap." But Garmin regularly tells me the the York Ouse flows up and downhill...

  • I'm a bit confused, and probably misunderstood something above. If there's no horizontal distance component used, and your definition is "just a summation of all the hills on your route" then why not just use Ascent ? What else is there to take in to account ? Apart from the dodgy seaside parkrun, the others I looked at seem to be roughly 10% of Ascent in meters - but not looked at many

Survey Follow Up

4:44pm, 15 Aug 2023
Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's blog.

I thought it'd be good to respond to some of the comments. Please excuse the paraphrasing and grouping of some comments together:

1) it might not be pleasant for the person asked to share the survey, if the local anti-bike people go after them personally. And it might encourage unpleasant comments.

Yeah, I get that, and I wouldn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable. If I do this, I'll probably start with a very small sample of groups (like the local ones I'm a member of), and I'm not averse to doing wider posting myself, if it proves useful. And the survey might hopefully illustrate that despite the noisy responses, there's overall support for cycling. My fourth aim (seeing just how vitriolic some of the comments might be) was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, although there's no denying that these opinions exist.

2) Be careful with personal information.

I hope folks view me as always trying to do the right thing here, but I could very easily leave the questions on age and gender out if they have the potential to be any sort of distraction. As for email addresses, it would be made clear that these would only be used to inform the provider when the survey results were available, and a strictly optional field.

3) Be careful to explain what you'll do with the information, and gain proper consent.

Very good point. I can brainstorm all the potential uses of the data, and share this for any participants who want to know.

4) The balance has to be right - if you only ask for negative opinions, that's what you'll get.

Good point. For every question that asks about negative views, there should be an equal one asking for positive views.

5) The motor vehicle question should be split to ask about four wheel vs two wheel motor vehicles.

Good point! Motorbikers must feel a lot of the vulnerability that cyclists do when on the road. It would be interesting if views change amongst these different categories.

6) Let people be more than one thing!

Absolutely. If people can declare themselves as cyclists AND drivers, we might get some interesting results in each piece of that Venn diagram.

7) Speak to cycling organisations to find out what they can tell me about what cyclists might need from FE.

Good point. I wonder if they will tell me without a fee.

8) Take the opportunity to share the features already on FE that I believe are useful for cyclists.

Again, good one. This could be a really great way to encourage the cyclists in the survey to come for a look.

9) Cycling organisations might be able to tell me what holds people back from cycling.

Yes, see point 7 though. Although I don't think it'd do any harm to include that question. If our results showed that a significant proportion of people are put off because of the risk of injury from cars, it might get a few people to be a bit more considerate.

10) Ask people when they last read the Highway Code.

Yes! It would be interesting to see whether anyone has actually read it since their driving test! I must admit that the closest I've come is sitting with my boy whilst he revised for his theory test.

11) Add "insist on riding on the road when there's a purpose-built cycle path".

I think this was covered by the response from um. Personally when there's a *decent* cycle path available, I do use it (there's a nice one between Shortstown and Cotton End in Bedford) - but in a lot of cases they are not very well maintained with potholes, detritus and camber; often have cars parked in them; susceptible to pedestrians wandering in to them without looking; and often very fragmented. However, it's an excellent suggestion to include it as a potential cycling behaviour that upsets drivers. I also wanted to say thank you to WayOfTheDodo for raising it, and hope you've not needed the cover you ducked behind. I am very glad that all of the responses were very courteous! The more we talk about it and understand the issues, the better. If only we could sort out all the world's problems in the comments :-)

I'll let all that stew for now, and see whether I am bold enough to (a) build it, and (b) share it in a few tester groups. If you have any more comments, feel free. But thank you again for all your gentle nudges in the right direction. Once again, the Fetch community steers me well!

  • I drive and cycle commute, cycling home around midnight from work this morning I came across the worst cycling behavior I hate. 2 teenagers weaving across both sides of the road without any lights on their bikes.
Yesterday cycling to work I had walked along the footpath past roadworks that had closed the road, a lycra clad road cyclist approached and cycled straight through and over the footpath at speed and it was on a slight corner where you're unable to see anything. Imo serious disrespect for footpath users.
I don't use cycle paths where every 200 yards or so you have to stop and cross a road junction otherwise yes I use them where I can.

A survey?

5:21pm, 14 Aug 2023
Every time I go out for a bike ride, at some point my thoughts turn to how the general public view cyclists. It's hard not to contemplate this when you've been overtaken at close quarters by an imbecile. I must say though, most motorists are really good at being courteous, but the imbeciles do stick with you.

If you're a member of your local facebook group, you'll probably have seen the occasional idiot popping up to complain that: cyclists don't pay 'road tax'; they wear cycling clothes(!!); they take up too much space; they slow motorists down; they saw one once doing something dangerous (whilst conveniently ignoring any study into the major cause of deaths and serious injuries on our roads).

When this happens on my local group (or indeed, anywhere) I do my bit to refute the complaints. I do so with mild hope that it might encourage those people to think more deeply about it; but also (confession time) because sometimes I can't resist pointing out when someone is so very badly wrong.

It's occurred to me that it might be a good thing to create a survey about attitudes to cycling, and (with your help, dear reader) to share a link to it across as many local groups as possible. The reasons I think it'd be good are five-fold:

1) it would be interesting to see how prevalent these negative attitudes are, and which behaviours cause the most grief for other road users;

2) it would be a good way of helping publicise Fetcheveryone as a friendly place for genuine cyclists (there are always a few defending the honour of cyclists whenever one of these negative posts crops up);

3) we might get some useful information about what holds people back when they contemplate cycling;

4) a little bit of excitement at the prospect of a free-text box asking "what annoys you most about cyclists?";

5) it might confirm my suspicions that most people really don't mind cyclists, it's only the noisy people that have an issue.

I've got a rough idea of a question list (but would very much welcome other suggestions). Obviously these are not fully-formed questions yet, I'm just trying to shape it up:

A) Age / gender? [so we can see if there are trends amongst any group]
B) Do you cycle? (no

rarely

occasionally etc)
C) If yes, what purpose? (transport

fitness

social - a 'tick as many as you like' box)
D) Do you drive a motor vehicle? (yes

no)
E) If so, do you think cyclists behave well on the road? (yes/no)
F) If you said no, which behaviours led you to say so? (jumping lights

changing lanes

hard to pass

increases my journey time

rudeness

endangering pedestrians

I don't like their outfits

other (please specify [*cackle*])
G) If you don't cycle, what puts you off? (cost

vehicles

hills

can't ride

fear of injury

health

other (specify)
H) enter your details for a link to the results when the survey is complete

What do you think? What else could I ask? If I put together a survey, would you share a link on your local FB groups?

As I run & walk in the New Forest, I have a special hatred for those cyclists who ride anywhere and ignore the 'rules'.

  • Not saying this is a bad idea, but if we were doing this at the university, we'd need to run it through ethics because of collecting personal data (age/gender/email address). You might even need to do a risk assessment for those posting the survey on facebook groups if they're doing it under their own name because of the potential for abuse/cyber stalking/doxxing.

  • i think this has good intentions. My fear (as someone who runs surveys for a living) is that if your starting point - even unintentionally - is "list all the reasons you hate cyclists" then that's the kind of person you're going to attract. Image if this survey's starting point was "tick all the good things about cycling and cyclists" [don't cause pollution / they're smiley people, etc] then you'll get a very different response. I think it's definitely a good idea to do something like this though. Good luck.

  • I really like a comment that Chris Boardman once made - 'there is no such species as cyclists'. There are people who ride bicycles and many of them also drive motor vehicles. Hence when I see something like 'do you think cyclists behave well on the road?' to me it reinforces the attitude that cyclists are somehow different people. Also most of us have seen people acting badly on a bike and others that are fine, so how do we respond?

I once had to complain to our local council who started a transport survey with ' Are you a pedestrian, cyclist or driver? (tick one box).

  • Organisations do run such surveys, e.g. local authorities trying to encourage cycling. LindsD's question, 'What do you plan to do with the information?' is a good one.
You have five aims. Will a survey meet them all?
Cycling UK and British Cycling might be able to provide you with information on what your survey would be asking without you running into issues of diversity and confidentiality. That could meet aim 1.
They might be able to give you ideas of what cyclists might value most in what FetchEveryone offers, and what additions might most appeal to them.
That leads to aim 2: publicise FE as a cyclist friendly site. Do you have a list of the features that are useful for cyclists, for the publicity?

Aim 3: I think the national cycling organisations could supply this information.
Aim 4: I worry that this would encourage negativity from agitators, rather than returning constructive suggestions or positive publicity.
Aim 5: I think it is the case that most people are pretty positive about cyclists and cycling. The others are not likely to be persuaded by a survey, sadly.

  • In my defence WayoftheDodo ..
    1) The Salisbury A36 cycle path is built so you have to give way every 50 yds (or so) to incoming/outgoing traffic to the shop carparks, garages, Kwikfit etc. And separated from pedestrians by a white line. So it's not, a real hazard for all.
I always cycle on the road section and ignore that bit of cycle path. For my own safety. And 90% of the time, I'm keeping pace and not slowing the traffic down
    2) The Romsey section. I cycled it once. I'm not sure which was worse. The brambles or condition of the tarmac. Both real dangers and incompatible with cycling. So that's another road section for me.

  • Personally, I try to follow marked cycle routes where I can (I plan ahead using the CyclOSM map option in 'Routes'), though they're not always very clearly marked or well thought out, and there are a few that are not so great for road bikes (or don't make it clear you have to lug your bike over footbridges in places), so if there was some sort of tool where cyclists could add handy notes about certain routes, that would help with planning ahead and avoiding certain pitfalls - a bit off-topic, but just something that came to mind.

  • I know this isn't the place for an in-depth discussion, but just to pick up on the point made by WOTD (which is definitely a valid comment because it's a point regularly made by non-cyclists): unfortunately not all cycling lanes are good. Some are badly designed and so makes the cyclist feel more vulnerable than not having a cycle lane. As a cyclist I do get annoyed when other cyclists don't use 'good' cycling lanes, but I often don't use cycling lanes that I know are more dangerous to use and/or covered in glass and sharp objects because they don't get cleaned as often as roads. But WOTD's point does highlight an important issue.
    GordonG
    12:50pm, 15th Aug 2023
  • Indeed, cyclists are entitled to use the road:
Use facilities such as cycle lanes and tracks, advanced stop lines and toucan crossings (see Rules 62 and 73) where they make your journey safer and easier. This will depend on your experience and skills and the situation at the time. While such facilities are provided for reasons of safety, cyclists may exercise their judgement and are not obliged to use them.
    gov.uk
So, if it is not safer or easier, there is no reason, so far as the highway code is concerned, to use cycle infrastructure.
What is to be wondered at is:
The poor state of such infrastructure, which deters people from using it.
The two thirds reduction to the active travel budget made by the current government, which reduces the benefits that active travel gives to people and society, including lower NHS costs, lower road wear, lower pollution, lower congestion, and improved productivity. It does look like a short sighted cut to me.

They should make all cycle lanes like these in Dumfries

And have police outriders, with a radio car and a maintenance / spare wheel car following. Wth an optional camera bike

And stewards to keep people out the way/

    Then I'd use them ;-)

Hope that input helps the survey. Although I understand there's quite a few people in and around Dumfries very upset with the inconvenience of the road closures. Quite a few others who thought it was one of the best things ever to come to the town.

  • Thanks everyone, all valid points in reply to my comment on cycle lanes. The one I'm most familiar with is wide, has a better surface than the road and is regularly cleaned. Most cyclists use it very happily (I've spoken to lots of them). A small minority insist on using the road, despite the risk from the traffic... I agree I really should get a bike and try it for myself.

Did you know?

12:59pm, 11 Aug 2023
That you can send routes directly from FE to your watch? (via your Garmin app, or Wahoo, or whatever you use)

If you didn’t know, here’s the process on your phone:

0) make a route on FE, or use one of your existing routes

1) open route and download GPX

2) open the GPX in your downloads, and look for the little export icon (an arrow leaving a rectangle, on iPhone)

3) the export options include Garmin (I also send routes to my Wahoo app for use on my bike)

4) once the route arrives in Garmin, you can send it to your device. Once synced, you are good to go.

I do this quite regularly, for WSW purposes, and so I know where I’m going when I’m on my bike.

I hope that was useful :-) Have an A1 day.

I made a thing

2:09pm, 10 Aug 2023
First, thank you for all your good wishes regarding the car. It's done about 150 miles since I collected it from Letchworth, and sounds absolutely fine - although there was one final poke in the windpipe. The tyre pressure alert came on, which it sometimes does - so I gave all four tyres a bit of air to bring them up to the recommended pressures. But the front passenger tyre must have had a slow puncture, as it was starting to pancake again by the following evening. It's been on enough kerbs, flatbeds and workshops - it's no surprise it's picked something up at some point. I've just had it replaced, so that's another £75 to swallow. But hey ho. I missed spending time in garages.

Anyway... I made a thing. It's not really running related, but it's proving very useful for me, so I thought I'd share it, so you could use it too, if you like. It's a simple to-do list manager. You can:

1) add as many tasks as you like.
2) drag them up and down to reorder them
3) set the completion date (this does nothing, other than to act as a reminder)
4) use the bell symbol to mark certain tasks as priority
5) click the tick to mark a task as complete (at which point it disappears from your list).

Like I said, it's really simple, but it does the job for me. No-one else will be able to see your tasks, so you can put what you like in there. And because it's not really a site feature (at least unless you convince me otherwise), I won't be adding it to the site navigation. If it proves useful to you, I suggest you use the white star symbol on the right-hand-side of the site menu, to add it to your shortcuts. You can access your shortcuts (if you have any) via the bit that says 'Shortcuts' (on desktop), or via the curvy arrow symbol (on mobile).

Anyway, here's the link. I hope you like it.

Could there be an option to have it marked as complete / crossed out, or sumfink, with a separate option to 'reinstate' it later or delete it for good? I might complete a repetitive task once and then, a few days later, need to re-add it because it's due again. If you're not looking for comments, ignore the above. VC Day

9:46am, 8 Aug 2023
Victory over Car Day.

At least, that's the hope. It's all been put back together, and the engineering company in Letchworth are taking it for a test drive this morning. All being well, I should get a call at about 10am to say that it's ready for me to go and collect it - and then I have a 22 mile cycle ride planned to pick it up.

It's been just a smidge over a month since I last saw the car. From the side of the road on the outskirts of Wolverhampton, we got flatbedded to the southbound services on the A6; from there another flatbed to our local garage in Bedford. They admitted it was beyond their capabilities, so it went on another flatbed to the Ford garage. They charged us a lot of money for diagnostics, new injectors, and to tell us that the only route they recommended was a new engine for £13,000.

I phoned around and found our engineering company, who strip down and repair engines. They've had to bore out the cylinders to make them smooth again; install new oversized pistons to fit these new cylinders; and alongside that they've had to replace the torque converter because it had become corrupted with crap from the engine; and the catalytic converter for similar reasons. The catalytic converter is a second-hand job because Ford say there's a nationwide shortage of this particular one. I am told that the wing mirrors are in excellent condition, and should be ok for a few more miles yet.

Adding up all the towing and pieces of work from the three different garages, the overall cost is currently £6670. We are hoping that this is finally it, because frankly, it has to be.

We have spent a lot of time focusing on all the thing we have to be grateful for. We are both well, and luckily we had some savings, even if we'd like to have spent them on other things. There are plenty of people in much tougher situations than a stupid car. So it's ok, really. And if all else fails, I spotted a good fallen branch on our walk with Stephen a few days ago. If the car doesn't work now, I'm going to give it a damn good thrashing.

FBI Agent

3:43pm, 7 Aug 2023
If you're a cyclist, you may notice a new box at the top of your training entries. It will only appear on training entries where you have covered at least 10 kilometres.

I'm calling it the FBI - the Fetch Bike Index.

It gives you a score between 0 and 100ish, a bit like WAVA, telling you how well you did on your ride. It takes your gender and age into account, using a similar age curve to WAVA, just simplified a bit.

Rather than using world record times, I thought I'd take a slightly different approach and use best times by Fetchies.

I spent some time filtering out training entries with no maps, virtual rides, sodding train rides, and anything else that looked dodgy. I plotted the resultant best times on a distance vs time graph, and produced two pleasingly linear graphs for male and female times.

If you're right at the top of the tree, you might find yourself with scores above 100. This may well be down to the fact that the times don't *quite* fit into a linear relationship. Or you might have won multiple medals at the Commonwealth games :-) In this latter case, as we have a female medalist but no male medalist, I went with the next-best times for the female graph, to avoid skewing the rest of the female FBI scores downwards. I hope that makes sense.

If it all works, and gives you some nice scores, great. If not, I can perhaps dig a bit deeper and maybe use world record times. They *are* a bit tricky to tease out though, as there seem to be more factors in play than there are for running.

Toodle-pip :-)

  • From a quick look at mine it looks like they give much lower scores for short rides than for long ones.  Last month I did 2 TTs on essentially the same course - 10 and 50 miles.  I get a score of 118.68 for 50 and 54.34 for the 10.  Those should be both close to max effort, same course, same rider, same bike etc (and if anything the conditions for the 50 were possibly worse).  On a different course I was fastest woman in a 10 mile TT with a score of 57.7.  I scored over 120 on a 100 mile TT last year. Not as directly comparable, but also a long effort, I got 100.22 on a 83 mile club ride on a road bike at a much lower effort.  I'm not *that* much of a distance monster.  (Not a criticism - I can imagine it's *very* tricky to tease out all the factors!)

  • In a comparison against all cyclists I'd expect to be maybe 70 - 75% - decent enough to win small races but nowhere near the best (I've been overtaken by enough female pro triathletes on our club TT to see the difference!). Maybe a bit higher if you add some age grading in. I think it's the short rides which are too low, but there could well be times on much faster courses than the ones which I ride which skew it.

What keeps you going?

2:33pm, 2 Aug 2023
The theme that unites us, no matter what our sport, distance or pace is the requirement to KEEP GOING. Sometimes this is easy, when the road seems to flow beneath us. And sometimes it's bloody difficult when the wind is in your face and your nipples are bleeding. Sometimes we choose to stop, and sometimes we choose to keep going.

There are obvious platitudes along the lines of "When the going gets tough, the tough get going" (I am sorry for singling out Billy Ocean), and stuff you see stencilled onto gym walls about pain being weakness leaving the body, and sweat being merely the suppressed angry tears of a thousand missed opportunities, and that sort of thing. For me, these are at best something to produce a "hmm, yes I suppose", and at worst enough to cause a painful cringing injury. A crinjury?

One approach that I do like is the idea of breaking a task down into small sections. When Australia battled in vain to win the final Test Match of the Ashes, the commentator Mark Taylor spoke about breaking the target (a further 69 runs) into blocks of 10, and not thinking beyond each block. Katie has heard similar advice from an iron lady (a triathlete, not a milk-stealing politician) about breaking an event into small chunks. I guess the quintessence (new word, trying it out) of this approach is to look no further than the current stride, pedal or catch. That feels like a very Zen approach, so I like it a lot.

Another thing I rely on sometimes is the little hairy bump on the base of my spine. I was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele, which is the most serious kind. The vertebrae don't close up properly, and the spinal cord protrudes out of the hole in a little sac of fluid. Usually this means that the nerves are damaged, and usually it means paralysis of the lower limbs, both kinds of incontinence, hydrocephalus and severe intellectual disability. In the early seventies, it was not uncommon for children born with this condition to be allowed to die. When I was six days old, neurosurgeon Mr Weekes not only saved me from all those difficulties, he gave me a reason to be grateful for everything I have.

How do you keep going? If it doesn't fit in a comment, write me a blog.

As I left one checkpoint on Saturday, I realised that, although I knew exactly where the next checkpoint was and the exact route to it, I didn’t know exactly how far it was. Guys like Marcus Aurelius bang on about in Meditations (A blazing fire makes flame and brightness out of everything that is thrown into it) and Epictetus in either the Enchiridion or Discourses (Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to; rather, wish that what happens happen the way it happens: then you will be happy).
The ancient Greeks & Romans didn’t call love of fate Amor Fati, that comes from a fella by the name of Fred Nietzsche (I’m so glad autocorrect spalls that for me) who said “Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to; rather, wish that what happens happen the way it happens: then you will be happy.” (You ever seen so many happens in one sentence before?)

When you paste, the image will be added to your Fetch pictures, and the appropriate code will be inserted wherever your cursor was in the blog/forum post.

July was a good month overall for all three sports :-) I won't bore you again with details of my time at the Big Welsh Swim, but if you missed it, you can find it here: fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2023/7/469726

The main follow-up (aside from the ongoing issues with the car) is that I have not swum since. My hands took quite a bit of time to settle down after the event. When the swelling went down, my hands would creak loudly any time I bent or straightened my fingers. That went away about a week after the event, but the main tendon (excuse sketchy anatomy knowledge) on the first finger of my left hand is still a little tight. I hope to get back to swimming for fun this month.

Running took a bit of a back seat, as I rested up the week before the swim, and then felt pretty tired for the week that followed. But I had a storming week at the back end of July, and finished the month with a better-than-expected 68 miles. I find myself in the last 32 of the WSW Multimatch too (for the first time), so I have an incentive to carry that on in August. I managed to trigger one of the local speed cameras with my running too:

And guess what? I cycled! The first one was a relatively short trip to deliver a hoodie to a local Fetchie, but it broke my duck for 2023.

My bike got a treat. I've owned it since August 2015, and for the first time ever, with 1400 miles on the clock, I was nice to it! I'd bought some chain lube a few months previously, and I squirted a load of that all over the chain.

I took it out for my first longer ride of the year - a 22 mile loop heading west through some pretty villages, and then east again along the dull-but-smooth A422 with the wind at my back. Some combination of a windy rear and a healthy lubing meant I came home with new lifetime PB benchmarks for everything from 1km up to 10km :-) The 5k benchmark of 8:33 appears to be the most noteworthy, putting me quite high up this table: fetcheveryone.com/league-weekly.php?category=B&distance=5k&gender=x&age=0&days=30

The bike got another outing last week, doing my usual thing of trying to grow my Conquercise lawn - and the pace was decent again. It seems possible that we might get our car back towards the back end of this week, so I have a tentative plan to cycle to it in Letchworth. It's always nice when something fun proves to be useful.

--

And there was a bonus fourth sport in July! My boy found a cricket net in Hucknall that has a bowling machine - so we've had a couple of sessions there. The first one was about a week after the swim, so my hands struggled a bit when holding the bat. But it's lovely to feel bat on ball again. The machine goes up to 95mph, so of course we both had to see what that was like. Jeebers! I saw the ball coming, but there was no chance of me doing anything about it. We tried all the paces in between, and I can just about cope at about 70mph, although it helps to know in advance where the ball is going to pitch. It's increased my admiration for international cricketers who regularly face 80mph+ bowling (and indeed, 80 is considered to be relatively easy in pace terms, compared to someone like Mark Wood who bowled some 96mph deliveries during the Ashes).

The net is at a bat factory - and there's a teasing pallet of unmade bats right next to the nets:

Let's see what August brings. Hopefully a big dose of all four :-)
