Today's plan

7:58am, 30 Apr 2022
I've been studying my position in UTMOST Division 14, and worked out what I need to do. I'm currently in 4th place:

fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php?div=14

To get a promotion spot, I need to usurp Joopsy, who is currently three points ahead.

If I can knock out a 10k at 8:25/mile, then I should increase my 10k points from 13 to 18; and also increase my 5 Mile points from 11 to 18. In doing so, I should also steal points from Joopsy and Ingo, as I'll have bettered their current 5 mile and 10k times. I should end up on 87 points. There's no point me trying to go after rednaz, as he's clearly rising through the ranks like a bubble, to find his true division.

If I manage to run to plan, and get promoted on Monday at midday (badge, woo!), my times should give me sixty-something points in Div 13, which should leave me comfortably mid-table. After that, I'll have to sit down and study the tables again, because it's too many levels of what-if to hold in my poor brain.

Whatever pace my run is, I am heading to Box End to rendezvous with Katie, who's on a bike ride with Leatherback and Loggerhead. Hopefully I can run through Great Denham before the parkrun starts, or it'll be like trying to fly through bits of Alderaan.

We've got peanut butter sandwiches and bananas to scran, and then we're heading out to meet Wine Legs for a couple of hours of walking :-)

There may be gardening this afternoon. And maybe a little snooze :-)

Have a good Saturday Fetchies!

NEW UTMOST BADGES!!!!!

3:18pm, 26 Apr 2022
I think the title gives you most of what you need to know :-)

I've added 21 (twenty-frickin'-one) new badges for players of UTMOST.

fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php

There's a badge for promotion to each of the top 20 divisions*, plus a special one for winning division 1.

*There are currently 20 divisions, but new joiners will get shunted into division 21 and so on, if div 20 is full.

For those of you unfamiliar with UTMOST, here's a copy of the Game Guide:

Game Guide
You join in the bottom division, but weekly promotion and relegation means you can rise quickly.

How do I score points?
UTMOST is a challenge based across seven distances, from one mile up to a marathon. If you are the fastest at any of the distances, you collect 20 points. If you are second fastest, you get 19 points, and so on. Your five best scores count towards your overall points total.

Which performances count towards my score?
All running from the last 365 days. The information in your race portfolio is combined with GPS data from your Fetch Benchmarks to work out your best times.

Some of my times look wrong
It's possible that some of your Fetch Benchmarks are wrong e.g. a car journey classed as a run. To maintain the spirit of the game, please check these regularly for bad data.

When does promotion and relegation happen?
Each Monday at midday, the top three from each division are promoted. If a division is full (20 players) then the bottom three are relegated.

I can't see any times!
If you're on mobile, hold your phone in landscape orientation for extra detail.

I think I've disappeared!
If you haven't logged any running during the last 365 days, you'll be gently removed from the game. But you are most welcome to rejoin and fight back!

Are there badges?
Yes! Each time you gain promotion, you earn a badge!

Why is it called UTMOST?
It stands for UnTradeMarked Optimum Sporting Trophy. The game was first built in 2012, and there were strict publishing laws relating to that big sporting event in London. So UTMOST was my alternative name for what was meant to be a multi-disciplinary challenge.

And here's a link to the game:

fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php

Keen badge collectors may have already worked out that if you leave and rejoin, you can enjoy a profitable few weeks as you rise through the ranks back to your existing division. But it's also a bit of a gamble, especially if quite a few people join up too, as we may get a bit of a logjam at the bottom :-)

A plug for some races

2:39pm, 13 Apr 2022
Fetchie 'olde english' asked me if I could give a shout out for two free events that he's organising in the Derbyshire area.

You register (it's free, that's a GREAT price), and then using the iOrienteering app, you have two hours to hit as many checkpoints as you can. So it's up to you to decide what route to take, so long as you check in at the start and finish. You can also do your run at any point within a week long window.

It sounds like a fun way to explore the area, and a nice way to get some mileage-with-a-purpose.

Raspberry Pavlov

For those of you who don't know, this is Stephen.

His bed is under my desk, and he's an excellent colleague. He'll be 10 in November, and getting more eccentric by the day.

In the picture, he has a crisp balanced on his head. You might be thinking that this is because he is incredibly well trained, and that I am writing this blog to let you all know how smart my dog is. But the truth is, he's just completely unaware.

He's a real character, and has some interesting traits.

For several years now, he has been reluctant to drink water from his bowl. He will happily drink from rivers, puddles, ditches etc. He will stare at a full bowl of fresh water and whine until one of us pours a bit more water into it for him. Then he'll tuck in.

When he first started doing this, we thought he was detecting something bad in the water - so we'd empty the bowl, give it a quick wash, and refill it for him. But we quickly discovered that he just wanted to know that the water was fresh. And so all you had to do was chuck a bit more water in, and he'd be happy.

Experimentation has revealed interesting nuances. He doesn't need a lot of new water in the bowl. Just a cup full is enough. And then The Boy made a discovery. If you take a cup full of water OUT of the bowl, and chuck it back in, Stephen is happy to drink it :-) And you can get away with as little as a 5ml Calpol syringe full of water too.

We thought this was the extent of the weirdness - but a few days ago, I made a new discovery.

I *recorded the sound* of me pouring water into his bowl. The next time he whined for water, I bent down near the bowl and played the sound on my phone. He tucked in!

I have taken my research further, and discovered that I don't need to make the trip to the bowl. I can sit on the sofa and play the water sound through a speaker next to the bowl.

The next step is to set up a Raspberry Pi connected to a small speaker near the bowl. I could make it play the water sound every so often, or (stretch goal) I could find some kind of sensor that could detect dog whining, and trigger the sound accordingly.

Just a little insight into my dog. Katie's just told me that she saw him in the garden getting chased around by a bee :-)

United Colours of Cross Training

3:19pm, 6 Apr 2022
Previously, all cross training activities in your training log are marked as 'CT' with white text on black background.

phal (Feature Request #1275) asked if she could set up different colours for her cross training stuff. She does climbing and yoga, and wanted a quick way to tell them apart.

If you go to your category list (Profile > Settings > Training Options > Edit Category List):

fetcheveryone.com/training-categories.php

you'll see all the categories you've enabled for your training log. I've added a little rectangle against all of the cross training activities that you've chosen.

If you click on the rectangle, it should open up a colour picker, where you can pick whatever colour you'd like. Just bear in mind that it will need to contrast nicely with white text :-)

Once you've picked a colour, your training log should give you a clearer picture of your different activities:

and in calendar view:

Hippy Wednesday :-)

A little Streetview adventure

12:21pm, 5 Apr 2022
I am just back from a nice five miler, and as always, I pop in to the Virtual Challenge pages to check my latest Streetview (there's a button just above the map, and you'll have a different one for each challenge you're part of). It's often just a hedge and a 30 sign on the side of the road, but there are plenty of gems!

Today, for reasons I have not fathomed, I seem to have arrived here:

Initially, I thought it was a court room - but the symbols on the wood in front of me look masonic. There's someone in the big chair. Am I about to be allowed in? Or kicked out?

Panning round, I wanted to see if I was surrounded by strange hooded figures holding pitchforks, or whether there might be chalk drawings on the floors.

But no, the only witnesses to this event are a little girl and her father:

I also note that there's a pole behind me. Should I start dancing round it?

What can have happened? Answers on a postcard (or in a comment) please :-)
