I did an actual proper race! Aside from my adventures in the ultraworld, and parkruns, and virtual shenanigans, and swims, and a social run I did with a mate I hadn't seen for years... this was my first actual proper race since Abingdon Marathon in (*checks notes*... oh blimey!!) 2018!!
I got cajoled into doing it at the pub one Sunday a couple of months back. My main goal for this year is the cricket season (did I mention that?), but I've been trying to do some speed training because I reckon it'll be pretty useful to help me when I'm darting about a cricket field
I car shared with @Silvershadow and @Elsie Too with @Nightjar as our excellent chauffeur for the morning.
I'd somewhat forgotten what a race feels like - both the standing around at the start, and the actual thing itself. We got there with over an hour to spare, so we did a lot of standing around and people watching. A very nervous golden retriever called Luna was being led through the crowd by its owner, but it wasn't having any of it. When it reached me, it pressed its head up against my knee and wouldn't move. I gave it a big scruddle around the ears, but it didn't want to budge.
I also got to meet @Snail who was lovely. He apologised for reporting multiple bugs to me, but I told him I was grateful, because I actively encourage you all to do that. And we had a little chat about our favourite site games. Nice chap. Would recommend
The race was "powered by" a local company that seems to have bought up all the gyms in the area, *rolls eyes*, but if the sponsorship money makes it possible for the race to go ahead, then I guess it's serving a purpose. There was some sort of aerobic warm up / satanic ritual, which I skipped - and did a bit of running about instead.
We lined up, and the hooter went (or at least, everyone in front of me started shuffling forward, whilst the mayor of somewhere said stuff none of us could hear. I heard her getting a briefing from one of the organisers. He actually said "no-one will be able to hear you"
). Just after the start line, there was a hefty speedbump, and I could hear various feet scuffing on it as people misjudged it. @Elsie Too said that someone had fallen over within splatting distance of her. Luckily our crew all survived.
I knew very little about the course, but had run a 50:58 benchmark on flat ground last weekend. I'd heard various permutations of 'undulating', so I wasn't sure what I was in for. I would have been happy to get inside or near my benchmark, given that. But I set the pacing tool on my watch to 8:05/mile, which would give me just outside 50 minutes, and then leave it to fate.
The excitement of the first mile or so meant I was inside my target pretty much straight away, so I tried to focus on running relaxed, and squinted ahead for signs of undulation. And they came. Nothing huge, or long lasting. But regular and relentless. I varied from as much as 20 seconds ahead of pace, down to moments when I was about 3 seconds ahead of pace. The latter worried me that I was starting to flag - but after each uphill, the downs were great for harvesting a few seconds.
The chat in the car on the way had said that it was 'net downhill' from about 7k. I didn't want to say at the time, but I reckon it's net downhill from about 4.7k onwards
That 'net' is doing a lot of heavy lifting. And yet I clung on to it, with the goal of getting to 7k, and then just trying to hang on. At each kilometre (I like them, they arrive quicker than miles!), I was still clinging to the right side of my pacer.
The hills kept coming (this must be the last one surely!) until the last one at 9k. The 'good news marshal' at the top was enjoying telling runners that they had no more in front of them. It really helped, and the last 900 metres is a lovely gentle downhill (aside from the killer speed bump). I pushed as hard as I could, then saw @Nightjar covered in our hoodies like a glorious hat rack on the corner that led into the finish field. From there I found a burst, and the crowds grew thicker as the finish line came into view. A guy sprinted past me, and I thought "I'm having a bit of that". Eyeballs out, I pushed it as much as I could, overtaking one poor chap who started walking at a bogus timing mat that was about 5 metres shy of the finish line
I got a chip time of 49:56, and a Fetch benchmark of 49:38 - plenty of good House Cup fodder
Walking back up the course, I had another little scruddle with Luna, and did a lot of yelling at the other runners - which is a really fun part of racing that I forgot how much I enjoy.
Thanks to Nightjar for the pic - I don't look too bad for the effort

The House Cup is now well underway, with Roughskin and Fungus vying for the early lead. Toenails are clinging on by their... toenails, and poor old Bunion is currently bringing up the rear.
fetcheveryone.com/housecup.php
Each player in the cup is in a number of matchups against players from other houses. Your goal, over the three week tournament, is to record faster times than the people you have been matched against. If you come top in your match, you earn 4 house points. If you come fourth, you still earn a house point - so even if you're not in a position to push your pace, completing the distances will help your house.
Overall, there are 488 matchups, which means that there are 488*(4+3+2+1) = 4880 points up for grabs. The total of all points on the leaderboard is 3123, which means there are still 1757 unclaimed points out there. Easy pickings!
The first couple of days have maybe led us to believe that it will be a two horse race between Roughskin and Fungus. But it comes down to early mobilisation!
All the houses have 116 members, apart from Fungus which has 115 (sorry Fungans). The plucky Fungans have mobilised 84 of their team, with Roughskin on 82. Then there's a bit of a gap down to Bunion on 72 and Toenails on 71. So the gap in the leaderboard between the top two and bottom two would reduce significantly if Bunion and Toenails get out there and record some times.
But those are the two laziest houses, everyone knows that
I know that first hand, because I'm in Toenails, and I haven't run yet. But I've got plans, I tell ya.
Hopefully we'll see all the teams putting on a show throughout the week, and I hope that T and B will close that gap.
There are a few questions that have come up regularly:
Why am I in a division of more than four?
It's because of the way the matchups work. The quickest in each house face each other, then the second quickest face each other, and so on. If (say) there are 100 bunions with a 10k time, but only 90 roughskins, 95 toenails and 89 fungus, we can only have 89 such divisions. We're left with (100-89) + (90-89) + (95-89) + (89-89) players. To keep things simple I put all these players in one big division. If you're in a larger division, only the top four will score points, sorry.
Does pause time count?
Our benchmark tool includes pause time. So you can't go out and do 16 x 100m sprints to get a really fast mile time.
Do e-bike times count?
At the moment, yes. If the general feeling is that this is unfair, I can look at excluding them for future cups. But as things stand, you're matched up against people who are of a similar standard, so it's an otherwise roughly fair fight.
Can I find a nice downhill to run a fast 400m?
Yes if you like. Please don't put yourself or others in danger though. Don't be a dick basically.
What if I see a time that is clearly dodgy?
For now, please report it to me using the help button at the top and bottom of any page.
I've run a mile but it's not given me a mile time
It's the age old problem unfortunately - always best to wait until your watch shows 1.01, rather than 1.00 (which could be anything from 0.995 up to 1.0049999 miles). Fetch benchmarks are totally unforgiving!
I've done a little poll to see if you're enjoying the House Cup:
If it goes down well, we could maybe do it a couple of times a year or something. I would love to read some creative insights into house lore

I don’t quite understand how the points work - at the moment l have 4 points for the 400m match. If one of the others then runs a quicker time l will move down to 3, but how does that affect the total, does the house then lose a point?HellsBells11:10am, 9th Apr 2025

Last month, Garmin announced a new paywalled area of their offering called Garmin Connect+, corralling several features for those willing to shell out. In fairness, they've promised that the stuff you already get for free is "not going away". But that doesn't mean that anything new that they develop won't end up in the paid-for tier.
That's up to them, of course.
But it gives me another opportunity to re-state my pledge to all Fetchies. That even if Fetcheveryone is a bit creaky around the edges; even if it lacks the polish of marketing and art departments; and even if every site in the bloody world goes behind a paywall, FETCHEVERYONE WILL NOT. It is here for you whether you donate or not, and you will always be able to access the best that I can provide.
That said, if you don't donate to FE, it would be nice if you'd give it real consideration next time the request box pops up. My other two rules are that (1) if you donate, I will never ever ask you to increase that amount; and that (2) there is no fixed amount for monthly donations. The average is about £4-£5 these days. Some people are willing and able to give more. Others donate what they can and I am grateful. The choice is always yours, and I turn off the Google ads for all donations.
Today I will go about my business, trying to make little gains here and there to improve the experience for you all. There are hundreds of feature requests to figure out: fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting and dozens of bug reports to investigate and fix: fetcheveryone.com/feedback.php - each one leading hopefully to a better place. Let's call it Fetch+.

Hello everyone
I've been wondering how you folks feel about the training home page - that's this one:
fetcheveryone.com/training-home.php
The idea behind the page is that it acts as a quick view of where your training is at the moment. Sort of like a control panel that summarises various aspects of your training.
Recently, I added the ability to import your step count, floors climbed, resting heart rate, metres travelled, active calories and weight - from Garmin watches at least (I will see if the other manufacturers offer similar). So I've been wondering how I might incorporate those stats into the page, for those that import them.
But before I go mad moving stuff around, or faffing about with stuff, I thought it'd be good to get your thoughts on the page as is. What other summary data could I look at displaying there? What would you like to see? What would you hate to lose? What do you not give a fig about? That sort of thing.
--
In other news, I've just paid my annual subs to Olney Town CC - I'm official
And I've ordered my playing kit, with my initials on it and everything
Saturday games start on the 26th April, Sunday games start on May 4th. The season is nearly here!

The 3 things I access from the training page areum
- my log (from the menu bar)
- targets ((and then to the graphs and leagues)
- heat map (mainly to find when I've run/walked a particular place and make sure my SWCP coverage is complete, so heat map to specific activity map)
The rest is inconsequential for me (running for fun these days, not really worried about pace, improvements or otherwise) other than random perusals on the annual comparisons when I see the menu.
What intials did you go for? FE or IW ?
We've seen the cricket grounds here being prepped for use. That means the newest member (I assume) clears the pony and cow poo.6:26pm, 7th Apr 2025 -
I've taken a screenshot and put a star by the things I access from the training home screen...Ness
I think I'd find step count, floors climbed, resting heart rate, and active calories data useful if it was available. Thanks.6:39pm, 7th Apr 2025 -
The 12 month benchmarks is empty for cycling and I don't record body metrics so they could be used for something for my training view home.MsG7:12pm, 7th Apr 2025
-
I don't tend to use it - except when training seems to take a long time to upload and (I think...) this is where the training queue is.Jen HB7:58pm, 7th Apr 2025
-
The log for me should be personal to my training. So the league could be got rid of and would mean plenty of space for the other personal measures. The training groups thing I would never use and the benchmark could go for me. Never use the heatmap either.Dave W
Graphs and log access must stay.
Cheers.8:32pm, 7th Apr 2025 -

I look at the top bar (annual/month mileage), the graph which I have defaulted to weekly run distance, and the training targets.westmoors11:22am, 8th Apr 2025

same as TeeBee, and the 12 month benchmarks are very motivating to meusc215 🇩🇪11:56am, 8th Apr 2025

I love it as it is. I can see it would be nice to add the new stuff but I wouldn’t want to lose anything currently on the page to accommodate it (except perhaps that I don’t look at the12 month benchmarks very often). I know I’m awkwardCheeky’s Dad7:50am, 9th Apr 2025

I wouldn't like to lose a HR %ages bar chart as I use that to keep an eye on whether I am roughly meeting an 80/20 split.NordRunner10:04am, 15th Apr 2025

Not specifically on the page linked here - but on the training log itself the ability to sort the other columns (rather than just the first few) would be usefulSnail3:44pm, 15th Apr 2025

Ok, so first of all, if you're not, then why not?
It should be a bit of fun, and you might be all "oh no, I wish I'd given that a go", because you can't sign up once it's started. There are 265 entrants already. Here's the link:
fetcheveryone.com/housecup.php
Anyway... for those of you that ARE signed up, now would be a *really* good time to clean up your Fetch benchmarks from the last six months:
fetcheveryone.com/benchmark.php?startdate=2024-10-03
When the cup begins, you'll be assigned matches based on your quickest times here, so if you've got a rogue unattainable time in your benchmarks, you'll be facing some very stiff competition when the cup starts, and you might not enjoy that.
So have a look through your recent ones (including your swim and bike times if that's your thing), and have a tidy up.
Brought to you by the swimmer with a ten minute kilometre
The toodliest of pips to you!

I came out of race retirement, and did one fast race which has my benchmarks skewed. I'll give it my best, anyone running faster than me deserves the win. Hoping for a bit of magic🪄SteveBelfast2:13pm, 3rd Apr 2025

Do we actually have to delete things? I've got at least one treddy session where my Garmin had a bit of a blip part way through and thinks I did a km over a minute faster than I actually did, but I don't really want to get rid of the whole session. Should I just see the House Cup as a Perhaps-Bigger-Than-Ideal Challenge?RunnyBunny2:47pm, 3rd Apr 2025

You don’t have to delete an activity, just the associated rogue benchmark 🙂fetcheveryone3:31pm, 3rd Apr 2025

All my times are "rogue & unattainable" post covid & flu. 😅🤣rhb
No worries though it'll give me a good workout challenge 💪7:49pm, 3rd Apr 2025
I think I've managed to make the slow 4G problem go away - if you get a chance to test it out, that'd be great.
Here's the empty page:
fetcheveryone.com/empty.php
It was finally diagnosed as some sort of routing problem connected to the O2 network. This was a heart sink moment, as it meant I'd have to battle through a few layers of virtual assistants, and customer service reps who would want to get me to reboot my phone and confirm whether I was a pay monthly or pay as you go customer. That kind of b*ll*cks.
It took several attempts to explain the problem in a way that made them stop suggesting irrelevant fixes. They even told me that there was a phone mast near me that needed fixing. But after finally getting it through that various people around the UK were experiencing the same problem, an issue was logged. And it seems that about half an hour later, the connection suddenly got nice and snappy again.
Fingers crossed that's the end of that
