A bunch of site goodies :-)

10:41am, 27 Jul 2021
Individual training runs should now have five coloured zones on the main HR graph, instead of the previous three zones (easy, threshold, and the grey bit in the middle) e.g:

fetcheveryone.com/t-19450873

You can set your HR zones here:

fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-heartrate.php
(Profile > Settings > Training Options > Edit Your Heart Rate Zones)

Likewise, the monthly summary should now show you the proportion of time spent in each HR zone:

fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php

I have some more cool HR graphs up my sleeve - coming soon :-)

--

For walkers, the monthly summary now has a functioning 'Walk' tab, so you can see the amount of time you spent in each zone during the month; your walking benchmarks for the month; and also your HR distribution (I was surprised that my HR isn't very high for the walking I do, but there's quite a bit of stopping for the dogs usually). Find it here:

fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php?tab=W
(Train > Summary & Analysis > Monthly Summary)

You can now set pace thresholds for your walks, just as you do with runs, rides etc. I've hopefully set all walkers up with default values that are centred around your average walking pace. Just don't forget to press the 'Save changes' button once you've mucked about :-) I've made it pulse a little bit, just to draw attention to it :-) Here's where you set your pace zones:

fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-pace.php?category=W
(Profile > Settings > Training Options > Edit Your Pace Zones > Walk)

--

You might also notice that recent training entries have the exact time, rather than just the hour. The training log is still sorted by hour, not by exact time, so you might get a bit of funkiness with the sort order of multiple sessions on the same day - but that should come good once the update has completed. I can't backdate this accuracy unfortunately.

--

In me-me-me news, my left calf went pop on Sunday, 7.5 miles into a planned 12 mile run. Luckily, Katie was out in the car, so I skulked on a picnic bench outside a pub for ten minutes until she collected me on her way home from swimming. By far the most annoying thing is that I should have taken the sensible decision to abort my run before it happened. From about 5.5 miles onwards, it was feeling tight. I should have stopped and had a walk at least. Foolish pride and misguided priorities say "run it off". But next time, I will remind myself that it's better to walk home with a tight muscle, than to limp home with a torn one, and that it's better to sacrifice a long run than to miss a week or two of running.

I'd been paranoid about the right calf since the start of March - and I thought I'd cracked it. I stayed away from speedwork, and I kept an injury log open, to remind me regularly to update how it was doing. It's doing fine btw, and sends its regards :-) Here's the history:

June 2019 - right calf
Sep 2019 - right calf
Nov 2019 - right calf
April 2020 - not sure which one
November 2020 - left calf
March 2021 - right calf
July 2021 - left calf

I'm 48 hours in, and walking is just about feeling normal again. The normal routine is to just take a week off running entirely, and then see how it goes. Hey ho. Plenty of worse things happen to people.

  • There is a pattern in your injury history there, must be some sort of root cause, strength work for the legs and hips might well be an answer.

Here's my dog walk from this morning - there are parts where the line drops to close to resting: fetcheveryone.com/t-19458740 The problem with using the range of the activity is that people like to lay them side-by-side, so if they don't have the same scale, it's harder to compare. Hello kitty

5:30pm, 21 Jul 2021
Just a quickie, because I'm about to melt into a heap.

I've added the ability to filter your log by a specific piece of kit. There are two ways to do it:

1) Go to your training log, and use the new option for kit under 'Filters' (can also choose "No kit assigned", which might be useful). fetcheveryone.com/training.php

Or...

2) Go to your kit bag, and click the 'Show Training' button next to any piece of kit. fetcheveryone.com/kit.php

It got lots of upvotes in the feature requests. I guess you can now find out which pair of shoes is your fastest. Growing up, I once chose a pair of shoes because my parents told me they were the same ones that Steve Davis wore.

I hope you like it, but just at this precise moment, all I really want is to go outside and turn the hosepipe on myself. And not just because of the Steve Davis thing.

Holy Simmering Mercury Batman!

4:31pm, 20 Jul 2021
I blogged about the 365 graph on Friday, and one of the commenters (K5 Gus) suggested I add some dates to show when the peaks occurred. I liked it, so I did it :-) I also added your 'current' values, and a little percentage indicator to show where you are in relation to your peaks. I'm at 91% of my peak mileage and slowly rising, like simmering mercury! How about you?

Settings

11:42am, 20 Jul 2021
It really isn't remotely sexy, but I thought I'd let you know that I've been tidying up the settings page. There were various settings spread out through the site, so I've just brought them all together in one place. I've tried to categorise them in a way that makes sense.

Phwoar, look at the lovely categories:

fetcheveryone.com/user-settings.php

There are still some inconsistencies. For example, some of the pages have a button to save changes at the bottom, whereas others will just update when you tick or untick a box. And the buttons probably all look a bit different from each other too :-) But hopefully it's an 'all under one roof' option that makes things a bit easier to find.

If you think there are any other settings that should be brought into this section, do let me know in the comments. I've left the game settings within the games themselves, and I think that's ok for now.

EDIT: if you're looking for your settings when this blog has sunk beneath the waves, there's a "Your Account Settings" link on your user profile, and also a link on the help page.

  • Just FYI, Change You Avatar and Unsubscribe navigate you away from the page with the settings list. One can always choose Back, but common navigation would keep the setting embedded in page with navigation still on left. Good to bring them all together though. Nice tidy up. More tidying than I've done in the last week/month/year! :-) G

A heart rate question

11:09am, 19 Jul 2021
As things stand, there are four HR boundaries that you can set:

Resting
Easy
Threshold
Max

Aside: I have tended to set my own Easy value to 70%WHR, and Threshold to 85%WHR - but I know some of you prefer to use %MHR as your basis for setting both these values.

Anyway... my plan (feature request 237) is to introduce five HR zones, so instead you'll get:

Resting
Z1
Z2
Z3
Z4
Z5
Max

The question is... if I transfer all the settings from the old format to the new, is there a consensus for whether Easy should equate to Z1, and Threshold to Z5? Or is it more likely that you'd want Easy = Z2, and Threshold = Z4, or something like that? Whatever the choice, I can interpolate values for the other zones, and then give you the option to change them.

In theory it shouldn't matter too much, because like I said, you'll be able to nudge the Z's around as much as you like. The proportion spent in each zone will be recalculated on the fly for your current and historic training anyway. But I just thought I'd ask.

  • 1 - warm up, 2 - easy, 3 - aerobic, 4 - tempo, 5 - threshold

Not sure of the point of a zone higher than threshold? Once you are over the lactate threshold I don't think there is much differentiation in training effect.
    flanker
    12:25pm, 19th Jul 2021
  • Five zones, and then have the website do the calc for you based on your chosen "approach" (e.g. HRR vs maxHR) would seem the most common approach. Toggle option for which version to choose, set %age bands for each of the 5 zones (e.g. 50-59, 60-69 etc) and calculate it all from the RHR and maxHR (as necessary). I'd not give them names as it could be controversial, just Z1, Z2 etc works for me.

    chunkywizard
    1:56pm, 19th Jul 2021
  • If we say that threshold = Z4, then I can definitely see a use for "above threshold" = Z5. Yes, there may be no beneficial training effect beyond that point, but if you're doing threshold runs, and you're getting a lot of Z5 action, surely that's a sign that you're wasting energy? And therefore, it's handy to know. Cut your Z5 whilst maintaining Z4, and run at threshold for longer.
    fetcheveryone
    2:25pm, 19th Jul 2021
  • If threshold = lactate threshold then Z5 means you are anaerobic and there is a definitive benefit in training in Z5.

Sleepy Shuffle?

11:35am, 18 Jul 2021
I got out of bed at 5.45 this morning (set alarm for 5, but fell asleep again). I wanted to get my long run done before (a) it got too hot, and (b) the boy woke up.

By the time I’d had a cup of tea and had a successful trip to the bathroom, it was 6.30 when I set out.

Mercifully, the Erewash Canal is a largely north-south affair, so I got lots of shade from the already warm sun.

And for the first time in this long run build up, I took some fuel with me (Haribo jelly babies - delicious!) and popped one every 2.5 miles to make sure I had a steady stream of renewable energy. It felt like they were a help, but today’s route was an easier one by far, compared to last week’s hillier run. I did this route a fortnight ago though, so I was pleased to see a lower beats/mile figure this time round.

I’ve been stuck on 12 milers for about a month now, so it was great to get past that. First goal was to get to 13.1 miles, to complete my Sheepy Shuffle Half Marathon. Go Google it, and I dare you not to be enchanted and reaching for your money box to enter. Here I am at 13.1 - getting a bit hot by this point:

I could have gone straight home from there, but 14 was winking at me, so I chucked in a little detour. By a mere 0.03 miles, it’s my longest run since Abingdon Marathon in 2018 😀

Happily I got home about 20 mins before the boy woke up, so we’ve just had croissants, and are both sitting in front of a fan, trying not to cook.

I’ve also posted on the local FB group about getting distance markers on the canal, and have had a really positive discussion with a lady from the Canal and River Trust.

All I need now is a big hug with Katie, but I’ll have to wait til this evening for that.

Whatever your Sunday brings, I hope it’s good. You can do it.

365 graph

1:43pm, 16 Jul 2021
There's been some interest in the 365 day graph since I posted mine on social meeeee-ja. Here's mine again - it shows 17 years of data!

I was pleased with it because I am hopefully heading towards a bit of a mileage peak, assuming nothing falls off :-) It's a nice way to look back, to remind yourself of what was going on during the peaks and troughs.

One of the bits of feedback was that it was difficult to find.

There are two routes to it:

1) go to Train, and look at your row of totals at the top of the page. Click the '365' one.
2) NEW there's a link to it under Train > Summary & Analysis.

or the third way is to just click this link:

fetcheveryone.com/training-365.php

No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

I've also added a new option (see drop down box above the graph) that allows you to switch from distance to time. Swimming mileage takes way longer to accumulate than biking mileage, so it can get a bit lost on a distance graph that includes all your sports. But switching to time is great for levelling the playing field.

Have a great Friday - please don't accidentally cook yourself.

Slipping on ma noob shoes

11:21am, 15 Jul 2021
Morning!

I'm on Fetch every single day, and it's safe to say that I know where to find most things :-) You'd hope so, wouldn't you? But my experience of navigating a site that I've visited every day for about 17 years is not exactly typical. It's easy to forget that there are people reading this who may be visiting the site for the very first time.

I did an interesting exercise a couple of weeks ago. I sat my boy in front of my laptop, and directed him to the home page. I told him to pretend that a friend had recommended FE to him, and that he was to try to sign up. It was fascinating to watch, and I made a load of notes for small adjustments I could make.

A quick example from my experiment with the boy. Once you get past the first sign up page, there's a page with four checkboxes on it. They allow you to opt in to various types of email (race guide, notifications, newsletters and ads). He's grown up in a world where all the links are paw-print sized, so he was clicking the *row* and not the checkbox. It was a ten minute job for me to make the rows clickable; and doesn't change the experience for those of us who know that ticks go in boxes :-)

I've mentioned it before, but I've recently read "Don't Make Me Think, Revisited" by Steve Krug https://amzn.to/3ksNGsO. If you've ever been responsible for the success of a website, I'd highly recommend it. The core principle is that if you can avoid hurting someone's brain when they use your site, they will enjoy the experience and come back for more :-) And on the theme of obviousness, 84 of the top 100 users of the site (by page views - see fetcheveryone.com/hitcounter.php ) make some sort of donation to the site, so it really makes sense to avoid hurting everyone's brains :-)

Here's one that came up as a result of reading the book. It's a small change, but one that will hopefully help people to navigate the site. If you've noticed a few ghostly goings on in the menus up at the top of the page, that was just me, faffing about :-)

Here's a screenshot from a couple of weeks ago, in which you can see how the site menu used to look:

The page I took this from was a leaderboard page that you get to from a race listing. But there's nothing in the way the menu looks to give you any sort of feedback about where you are in the site. Ok, that's not totally true. Because it was a page from the 'Race' section, the relevant sub-menu is showing in that pale yellow bar just beneath the main red menu bar.

But unless you know about all of that, I don't think it was very helpful:

(1) There's absolutely no obvious visual indication of which part of the site you are in; and
(2) it's not particularly clear that the sub-menu is there because you're in a particular section.

If you arrived at that example page, it would take a bit of thinking to work out how it fitted in to the site as a whole. With a bit of playing about, you might go on to work out that mousing over the menu items will show you other sections of the site; and that by a process of elimination, you're in the 'Race' section. But who wants to have to work all that out before they've even sussed out what the site is about?

The updated desktop menu hopefully illustrates the section you're in, and leads you toward that sub-menu too, because the highlighted section colour should match up with the sub-menu colour. And they say that change is not good ;-) I hope you like it.

  • I did notice that change, and I like it, thanks! I remember that when I first joined it took me a while to get used to the menu/sub-menu options, so hopefully it's better for noobs now.

^my new term for pacers! Although Urban Dictionary has a different definition :-)

Just a little blog to let you all know that I'm back safely from our week in Devon. Apologies to everyone who gets notifications of my training - we walked literally everywhere (parked the car on the day we arrived, and didn't move it until it was time to go home). I logged 40+ miles of walking, and 11 miles of running. The latter was hard work because of the altitude. There was altitude EVERYWHERE.

I also did some swooooooshing down the river to the beach. A third of a mile in less than ten minutes, doing not much more than bobbing like a cork; then walking back through the dunes to plop into the water and do it again :-)

Two cream teas! A gastrodog from the food bus on Bantham Beach, which was awesome. I need to recreate it.

Lots of doing nothing, and feeling relaxed. If I could move us down there, I most definitely would. But that'd give me a dream job in a dream location, so I mustn't get greedy.

If you've been in touch about anything, I'll hopefully work through some responses tomorrow and over the next few days. Hippy hugs from me.

World's Sexiest Bridges

11:00am, 1 Jul 2021
You know how sometimes you do stuff. And then a little while later, you realise you've turned into that geography teacher. The one with a bizarre fascination for train spotting that you just couldn't understand? Nice enough man, but in the nicest way possible, wtf?

In unrelated news, on my run yesterday, I took a picture of every bridge I ran past on the Erewash Canal. I noticed that they are numbered; and if something is numbered, to me that means three things:

1) at some point, they were considered so uninteresting that they didn't get names.
2) in time, they'll acquire that character.
3) you can try to collect the set.

Old cars, rusty machinery, the cranes in the harbour in Bristol. All good examples of stuff that often gets numbered, and then fast forward fifty years, and suddenly, crane 32 is still standing. Number Five is alive! Inside Number 9. Herby = 53. Area 51 (no-one asks about area 50 - that's where I'd land if I was an alien).

It's all just chance - but IS IT? Wooooooo :-) Yes.

Anyway... it was long run day yesterday, giving me the best chance of seeing how many bridges I could tick off. I joined the canal at bridge 10 in Sandiacre, and made it to bridge 23 in Cotmanhay. On the way back, I took photos of them all (except bridge 16, which I sailed past. It must be special, wooooooo), and it helped me to have something other than miles to tick off.

Unlike my geography teacher, I won't treat you to a detailed slide show, but instead, I've made a little montage of photos here:

I like the way they are all just a little bit different - even the ones that look exactly the same (22 and 23, I'm looking at you). My favourites are the stone ones (especially 12), but I even have a soft spot for the new kid 13A, which carries the M1, because the standard of graffiti is pretty good. Number 11 is our closest bridge, so I have nice memories of doing some magnet fishing there with the boy (a couple of rusty BMX bikes and a DVD player)

I've been trying to find a full list of them online, just to see how many there are. There's plenty of info on the locks (14 of those), but it appears they just numbered the bridges and forgot that I'd be interested. The canal continues for about another 2-3 miles before it reaches the "Great Northern Basin", which is obviously my dream goal. There, the Erewash Canal joins the Cromford Canal, and on to more adventures beyond. There's also some follow-up blogs in this, where I show you bridges 9 through 1; and The Hunt For Bridge 16.

Slightly seriously, it did get me reading a bit about the history of the canal. It was commissioned in 1777. They fired the bloke who built it, because they had to rebuild the top lock due to a "water level calculation error", but it made loads of cash for the Erewash Valley by transporting coal and metal and stuff. Then in the mid 1800's, the railways took over (the track runs right next to the canal - talk about rubbing it in). A bit of a revival in the early 20th century, and then a slow decline until the 1960's when it looked like it was going to get filled in. But luckily a group of dedicated nerds* formed to restore it, and tbh it's pretty lovely now.

Leave me a comment to let me know which bridge you think is the finest; or to confess to the weird stuff that you do that gets you through your long runs; or simply to offering counselling.

*I mean this as the highest compliment.
