Saturday was a bit of a whirlwhind
Up at 6am.
Out for my run at 7am.
Shower and change.
Barcode scanning at Bedford parkrun.
Home again.
Load the car up for the Big Fetch Mile.
Whizz to Tesco to buy some runner beans
Pick up Katie, then off to the stadium.
Two hours that were a bit of a blur, and more than a bit cold.
A quick pint with Fetchies (would have liked to stay longer, but soooo cold)
Home to fast-forward through some very disappointing rugby.
Out to the pub again for the next-door neighbour's birthday party.
Bed.
The mile went really well I hope. I made the decision not to run when the number of entrants went up past 100, and I think that was a good call. We had a lot of new Fetchies who had signed up for the chance to do the mile, but we also had some amazing support from some very familiar faces. Fenland Flier helped me pin down my banner in the wind; him, Nellers and Flatlander did loads of pacing to help everyone; Katie and Silvershadow bossed the timekeeping (with help from mjh17 and Nana Gill); Arbster, H.A.G. Girl and Schnecke made some amazing Fetch-themed bakes; Badger is working on 700 photos; and then Mark (aka No.83912) bought me a pint at the pub afterwards. I *know* that in making that list, I will have left some people out - just because everything was a blur - but every smile, pat on the back or friendly face all added to the swell of goodness. In many cases, people travelled such a long way to be there - and I am so grateful to you all for doing that, and for supporting the site.
I'll crack on with the next few venues this week. Dudley is up next on April 14th, then Guildford is going to become Woking, and Glasgow in May is looking like becoming Glasgow in June.
Thanks all!

Short on time? Please just visit this link and give me permission to continue to email you after May 25th. If you like.
fetcheveryone.com/user-settings.php
Want the detail? Read on
You might know that the new data protection legislation (aka 'GDPR' ) comes in to force on May 25th. It's a major redesign of the old Data Protection Act 1998, and takes into account just how much things have changed with data over the last 20 years. Nowadays it's easy for your information to whoosh around the world, so the need for protection is really important. It's there to prevent bad people from doing bad things, and so I hope as always that you can support me in this.
Part of the legislation concerns giving your consent to receive email. For the last 14 years, we've had a little box on the sign up form that says something along the lines of "Fetcheveryone can send me newsletters and such". It's pre-ticked, but it's hopefully been clear, and not tried to fool anyone, unlike those horrible bits of text you see on a lot of big company websites e.g. "don't not untick this box if you want not to receive anything other than email from people who aren't us". Added to that, there's always been a page in Profile > Settings, where you can change your mind. And there's an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email we send out. And I'd like to think that the stuff I have sent out (race guides, new stuff happening on the site, and the occasional advertisement for a third party race or product) is reasonable and relevant content.
But come what may, GDPR says that consent with a pre-ticked box is not consent. What this means is that on May 25th, my email list of 28,000 people is potentially reduced to zero. Which in turn means that beyond that point, I'm unlikely to be able to generate a great deal of revenue from sending email on behalf of events, and nor will I be able to tell you about updates to the site, new articles, stupid vlogs and race guides. Crucially, the advertising part accounts for about 11% of the money that the site generates, and therefore will have an unsightly impact on my face.
On the positive side, this means that as I rebuild these email lists, the recipients will have expressed a definite interest in hearing what the site has to share. At present it's not uncommon for an email to only be opened by a quarter of the recipients. That's not just on Fetch, but a common experience for any email list. Rebuilding via opt-in will hopefully result in much higher 'open rates' (yes, that's what they call it), and fewer unwanted messages.
Over the next few months, I'll be devoting quite a bit of time working on this and other aspects of GDPR. There'll be a few emails going out to ask current and lapsed users to update things to suit their requirements. The core feature of this will be an updated privacy policy, which will explain transparently how your data is recorded and used by the site.
So today, the rebuilding process begins. I've updated the registration form for new users, and added more granular options for email opt-in under Profile > Settings, or you can just click this link:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/user-settings.php
If you can tick some boxes, that'd be great - and if you can share the link by blogging about this yourself, or by nudging your buddies, that'd be really useful to make sure we get the message out as widely as possible. I'll link to this blog on my Twitter and Facebook pages, so if you can share it there too, I'll love you forever*.
*not as much as Katie though.

So. I went to my BigCo GDPR briefing today. Essentially I learnt that a German subsidiary Co tried what you've done, i.e. get everyone to sign up via a new consent form, and hey presto, they lost 90% of their mailing database.Oranj
So... BigCo has decided that's a bit risky for our future marketing plans and since you've not actually clicked "Do not subscribe" on any of our email campaigns, that's (sort of) consent to carry on as before. Don't quote me on this, BTW.
Generally though we're moving forward with questions of the form "is this request transactional?" or "is this request marketing?".10:22pm, 23rd Feb 2018 -

I've been auditing some of my code today. I've had to go looking for certain functions within the code and update them, in preparation for a background update that you'll hopefully never know has happened
The Fetch codebase spans 14 years now - so there are plenty of cul-de-sacs, backwaters and abandoned mineshafts. Occasionally, I find something that makes me go "awww, would you look at that". To myself. And I do.
Today it was the original Fetch relay:
fetcheveryone.com/relay.php
Given that it's over ten years since the baton was last seen, the Official Secrets Act now enables me to reveal that it was in fact, a dog poo scooper. You might find a few hints if you re-read its journey.

5:07pm, 20th Feb 2018
I've put the angry biker video on the home page, just for giggles. The guy is called Mike Imbergia aka 'Road Rash', and that only cost me £5! You can find him on a website called Fiverr: track.fiverr.com (that's an affiliate link by the way - I probably get 50p or something if you order something) - people will do all sorts of silly stuff for $5. I first got Road Rash to do a birthday message for The Boy - and have been meaning to get him to do a Fetch ad for *ages*.
I've also just added a loooong article about marathon time prediction to the home page - or you can just click this link: fetcheveryone.com/marathonprediction - please give it a share on Facetwonk if you enjoy it or just want to help spread the word.
And I'm excited as an excited thing, because my new t-shirts have just turned up. I got some cash off my parents for Christmas (they don't do gift-buying, they just like the family-being-together bit, except for the fact that they went on a cruise this year without me ). Anyway, ask Katie, it's really rare that I ever buy stuff for me - especially clothes - but I got a hankering for some new t-shirts after we saw some nice ones in Camden Market. I got these online though. Hands up if all three ring a bell
EDIT: Dog's do:

We went for a nice dog walk on Sunday. There's a nice curved bridge that Stephen always bolts across (normally so he can discover what the fishermen have deposited in the bushes - usually gross enough for him to get the hosepipe when he gets home).
I thought it might be nice to get down low with the camera, and try to capture him airborne. I haven't got it right yet - the shadows on the floor are annoying, and I wanted to get down lower so that I could just crop him out against the trees without the bridge on show. Here's the best attempt - with plenty of room for improvement:
But he did provide us with another lovely pic (and is modelling a Fetch Buff) after a bit of tooling around in the shallows at the edge of Priory Lake:
He's very much overdue for a Lionel Blaircut, which he's getting today. I'll post an after shot later on

I decided to stop doing these back in December, because the amount of time I was spending on editing them was out of proportion to the number of views. But I did like doing them - so I'm just gonna spend less time on editing. Here's the result:

Short simple format is fine - unless you can easily include footage of some running (eg Fetch Mile or races), or short Q&A with invited or volunteering Fetchies? (assuming a skype or similar session can easily be recorded, edited etc)3:03pm, 9th Feb 2018 -

Finally got round to watching (always do eventually)... Just a thought.... I know you've linked to the vlog from the homepage before, but what about actually embedding the video there to see if that increases views? Though would that send you the other way, wanting to be more polished and taking up more time again?ishep 🇪🇺
I think one important aspect of it is that it really shows immediately that FE is run by this friendly, approachable, thoroughly bloody nice chap - something that does come across anyway to those of us are properly stuck in to the site, but I wonder if the vlog format on the front page might help make that impression to newcomers more quickly and hence hook a few more keepers... I dunno... I'm rambling...
