- reduced price at running tracks (our council charges £4.80 - given that one would normally only do it for 1 hour and ideally should be every week, that's a big barrier to training)
- reduced health and life insurance for commitment/proof of running (any sporting activity) and not smoking, not being obese etc.
-subsidised/reduced cost health/recovery services e.g. physio, massage etc. for commitment/proof of running (any sporting activity) this one is a double win - encourages people in and keeps them fit. Probably cheaper than fixing them afterwards on NHS.

All def cheaper than inactivity leading to problems in old age. etc. G

Alistair Burt is indeed a runner. He's a member of Biggleswade Athletic Club (although it's on the other side of his constituency from where he lives). He helps at the 'Sandy 10' and other events - and I think it says a lot for his support of the sport that rather than insisting on being at the finish handing out the medals, he is quite happy to turn up at 7:30 in the morning to do car park duty.

What Tara and Happy G both said. Get them to commit to making more affordable facilities more available more of the time. Make it more possible to use running as transport. Make it less intimmidating to go out for a run by having more and more varied people doing it. You're the man for the job, Guv. Sort 'em out!

Brilliant! You are just the chap. Parkrun has done a great job of getting more people running, but I still know people who think it's too far, too competitive and not for them. How about more couch to 5k groups? Or regular 'training' sessions based around local races.

There are some great suggestions here already but I'd endorse MC on the costs of putting on road races - our local council is insisting on the Club using a company to handle the tiny road closures for our road races - meaning the cancellation of two this year, one of which is gone for good as it isn't economic any more.

Don't forget to smoke a splif in the toilets .........or was that the Palace ??

I'd love some new daps and fully intend to do another marathon but just not next spring! With a Ruby Wedding, 60th Birthday and daughter's Wedding all to celebrate next year I doubt I'd be sober enough to fit in the training!

Loved your video!! I just did my first marathon in September, training is hard, but with good running buddies, makes it so much more "enjoyable..." (Take note of the inverted commas around word enjoyable....;-)) which is why I'd love it if you'd stick me in the draw...one of my best pals has a place for LVM...I'd love, love, love to be able to be part of her first (and possibly!) last marathon experience..my running buddies got me round the 26.2 in Inverness, I'd love to be able to do the same for her...we could do a joint blog!!!!
