The shop is open!

12:54pm, 25 Sep 2020
Slight complication - the combat green isn't available in the zipped version of the hoodie. So I've kept combat green for the non-zip version, and added a forest green zipped option for those that want it.

The pre-order is now open:

fetcheveryone.com/shop

I'll take orders until 10am on the morning of Friday 9th October, and then RHS say "f you quote 3 weeks to be on the safe side but you should receive them before that." - so that means that at the very latest, I should get my hands on the hoodies by the 30th October, and hopefully much sooner.

Thanks for all your help in working out what to do.

Hoodie Colour!

4:58pm, 24 Sep 2020
The overall feeling I'm getting from the comments in the last blog was that when it comes to hoodies, you'd prefer something a bit less violently coloured, and a bit less pandemic-y.

So I've been looking at this colour, which is officially called French Navy. Little logo on the breast, big (normal) Fetch Everyone logo on the back. Everyone cool with that? :-)

EDIT: I've created a mockup of what the back looks like:

EDIT: I thin RHS are ok about me ordering a second colour. Introducing Combat Green:

New Fetch Hoodies

7:57am, 23 Sep 2020
Nothing firm planned just yet, but I've been thinking about ordering a batch of hoodies for next month.

My preference is the no-zip kind (like we've done before), as I virtually live in mine. Previously, we've done red ones and grey ones; so I reckon a different colour this time. Maybe with a small Fetch logo on the breast, and either a Fetch logo or 'Avoid Everyone' on the back.

Anyway... please could you cast your vote in this highly scientific poll, and feel free to leave some comments down there (including any colour suggestions) :-) Tak!

A big up/holler!

11:34am, 21 Sep 2020
The other day I was looking at my Twitter feed, and noticed that Hally (formerly known as Hallucyn8: fetcheveryone.com/userprofile.php?id=41963 ) announced that his new show was going live on Twitch. I tuned in, and I liked it!

It's not for everyone - the most recent show is called 'Friday Night Hard Beats', just to give you an idea of what to expect. But whatever you think of the music, he's there in front of the camera, mixing records together and chatting to whoever is listening in. And I think that's pretty cool.

And even if it's not for you, I'd recommend going for a nose around Twitch. It started as a place for gamers to upload video footage of game play-throughs, but it looks like it's diversifying nicely.

Here's Hallucyn8 on Twitch - he's on 98 followers:

twitch.tv

And as each show is completed, it gets uploaded to Mixcloud, which is another good place to find loads of free music in lots of different genres:

mixcloud.com

Although we're all here because of running (and swimming and cycling I suppose!) - I think it's finding out little bits about what everyone else does in their lives that provides one of the most enriching experiences about being part of a community.

  • Wow, thank you so much Ian, it's been a funny old year (understatement of the century) and as I'm sure you're aware I've been AWOL from here for some time. Nothing like the cancellation of all your planned races to kill the mojo!

Fetcheveryone is in my mind the blueprint for what a great online community should be and I will be back here at some point (sooner rather than later I hope). In the meantime I stumbled across another online community that to be fair rivals this one for the inclusiveness and welcoming environment and I couldn't have imagined a few months ago that I would be streaming live on the internet much as I wouldn't have been able to imagine running long distances and in both cases it's been the support of a great bunch of people that has got me there.

VO2max

4:37pm, 10 Sep 2020
If you look at the benchmarks section for a specific run in your training log, you'll see that I've added a VO2max column. I'm working towards making VO2max a usable column in the training log, and part of graphs etc.

I know that some of you have watches that estimate VO2max for each run - but I'm wondering how they approach it. My calculations are based on the Daniels' formula for estimating VO2max from a given distance and time. I'm wondering whether watches are using the overall distance and time for your run; or whether they're looking at speedier portions of a run to determine it; or whether there's no resemblance, and perhaps they're doing something completely different.

Please have a look at your figures, and if you have a watch that provides a VO2max reading (or, may Yoda mercy have, another site), I'd be interested to hear about any comparisons.

If you want to know more about VO2max, I'd recommend the excellent Daniels' Running Formula: amzn.to

  • I suspect it is the speedier section. My watch recorded a recent max VO2Max of 53 on this run. Fairly sedate until I stole an orange website thing off my brother in law at the end.

  • I think my Garmin must be doing some kind of cumulative thing, as it only goes up or down a point even if I’ve had a really rubbish run.

Most of my recent runs come out on this site in the 20s, but my watch says 41. The nearest run I’ve done to race pace in the last few months gives me 30 on here.

  • Haha. We were just discussing this on the Garmin thread.

This is what Garmin say: support.garmin.com

Garmin definitely use an algorithm that can analyse a specific portion so they can work with intervals.

Runalyse look to use the whole run hence very low values for intervals.

  • Ooh! I just had a look at my 5 mile virtual race from this Tuesday (which ranks at #15 in my all-time 5 mile benchmarks, so not the fastest but worthy of review). Garmin's verdict was 46. Runalyze displays that same data to two decimal places (46.38). However, their own assessment for the same activity, using the same data, is 35.39, versus 34.3 on the benchmark for the full distance here. In their waffle, they say: "Runalyze estimates the Effective VO2max for every run with heart rate data based on the relation of heart rate and pace. Optionally, elevation can be taken into account as well. The average of these values will be used as the athlete's current shape. As everybody’s heart rate may behave differently, Runalyze uses an additional individual correction factor which is calculated based on one's best race and its heart rate automatically. Alternatively, athletes can pick a manual correction factor." (I haven't).

NOTE: I'm only using Runalyze because they display the recovery HR, when I remember to record it! Anyway, hope this helps.

    4:51pm, 10th Sep 2020
  • Another bump for recognising that Garmin records it's own calc of VO2Max in its .fit files which I think are the ones processed by Fetch in the auto-sync. I'd love to see that become part of the data set imported into this site.

  • Garmin and Runalyse are using HR to estimate VO2 Max from sub maximal paces. I see what you've done just going for pace and distance but that will only work for races.
    SPR
    4:57pm, 10th Sep 2020
  • Garmins definitely use cumulative values, as FDNB says, and that cumulative value is stored in the FIT file. Seconding FDNB, SPR and Sigh's comments.

  • + for Garmin using heart rate , spurious wrist based readings (very low) Boosted my vo2 max reading and predicted great race times. i assume from this That having max hr set correctly in garmin is also important for calculation

  • If you are looking for speedier sections for Vo2max, maybe you could use it for predictions too? Sometimes the predictions are a bit slow for example if a run is one mile warm up, five miles fast, the one mile cool down. It then gives a 5k prediction slower than the 5k during the fast 5 miles due to the warm up bits

    5:17pm, 10th Sep 2020
  • I don't know if this is useful, but on 30/1/18 I had a club intervals session with the speedy bits 1.65 miles long and Fetch shows my 1 mile benchmark as 39.3. Eight days earlier I had had a hospital Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Test in which my VO2Max was determined as 50.1.

A week before the CPET, I had run 6x800m and my Fetch benchmark for 800m gives my VO2Max as 44.6.

  • echo the comments by Badger et al. It also seems to take into account Max HR somewhere as when that was set wrong it impacted VO2MAX. If I had to guess I'd say it's using working HR ranges rather than absolute?

  • It definitely use max HR. I believe it equates HR Max %ages to %age of VO2 Max. So if you're running 7mm at X% of HR max which equates to Y % of your VO2 Max, your actual VO2 Max must be Z.

  • My run yesterday morning (10th Sep - fetcheveryone.com/t-18047189 ) was my best for absolutely ages; your calculation estimates 29.6-32.3 over the various benchmark distances.

My Garmin (Fenix 5X + HRM-Tri) estimates my VO2max around 43 (occasionally bumping me to 44 for a day or two, then back down to 43). FWIW, pre-Covid it was hovering around 46/47.
It also gives me a cycling VO2max of 39 (I very rarely cycle, but do use a Wattbike regularly).

For obvious reasons, I prefer the number that my Garmin gives... but I suspect your number is probably closer to reality!

  • For my run from Tuesday
Fetch estimate: 31.3 to 41.3, depending on distance range.
    From my Fenix 5s - 60.26
From Runalyze - Traditional calculation 42.86, Correction for HR 68.61, correction for elevation 68.70

I don't trust the runalyze HR correction estimate as I have not set up my Hr zones / MHR etc
    Sam Jelfs
    11:34am, 11th Sep 2020
  • You're not calculating VO2max (the max amount of O2 you are capable of using), instead you are calculating the max O2 the person used on that run. As others have said, watches and other devices take your HR as a % of HRmax (or HR Reserve) at the pace you ran to calculate the pace you could have run at your HRmax, assuming a linear (or at least predictable) relationship between pace and HR. Polar's explanation of their "Running Index" score is here: support.polar.com

A benchmark derailed by GPS data nerd

1:02pm, 1 Sep 2020
Ever wondered why running a marathon doesn't automatically give you a marathon benchmark?

I had a feedback from a user today - they'd done a 20 mile run, but although they'd got all their benchmarks up to and including the 10 mile benchmark, they didn't get a half marathon benchmark.

My algorithm took exception to the GPS trace. There was a bit where the runner appeared to be travelling at 49mph, just after the 10 mile point, corresponding to an underpass.

In the pic, the runner probably ran along the blue line, but the underpass probably caused a deviation to the left (the satellite view backs this up).

When this happens, the current default behaviour is to drop any accumulated distance up to this point. The 10 mile benchmark was in the bag by this point, but there isn't 13.1 miles of error-free data to make a half marathon benchmark.

The pickiness of the algorithm is designed to make sure that folks don't get false times for their benchmarks because of GPS problems caused by tunnels, tree cover, pylons, tall buildings, angry clouds, area 51, subjugation by the government etc. Unfortunately, the longer the benchmark, the more likely it is that it will fall foul of one of these issues.

I've been musing about solutions. In theory, I know roughly where the GPS deviation happened (the pace went a bit nuts), and when it corrected itself (the pace settles down), so for the purposes of benchmark calculation I could perhaps replace that section with a straight line.

But it's fraught with fuzziness. What happens if the runner put on a burst of speed (not 49mph, but enough to make the calculations a bit less than clear cut)? What constitutes sufficient deviation to start meddling with the points? What if the true path was an arc, not a straight line - am I creating a false benchmark here? And how many points of bad data do I allow before I have to abandon?

It's something to think about :-)

  • In the example image, my guess is that the pace data is sane again immediately after that jump to the left. We can *see* that the location of the trace is not where it should be though. So working out where it rejoins the true path is a bit harder. I've been wondering about making it so that the dodgy points accrue time, but no distance. Will have to test that out. Smell of burning coming from my head :-)

Sometime my Garmin does show that I've used a wormhole through folder and warped space, so I do understand the problem!! I'd suggest you code for what you've suggested originally, but flag it with the word "Estimated"! And move on.... just let people suck it up if they don't like it, else you'll get caught down a rabbit-hole of GPS data points into the Neverland of data.

  • In terms of speed at least, could you not look for changes greater than x%? If you see a change of say more than +50% in speed, lasting for less than a couple of sample points, then you know it is a GPS error, and could flag it.
    Sam Jelfs
    10:55am, 2nd Sep 2020
  • It's a never-ending rabbit hole, and in "fudging" one edge case you'll probably cause several more. I'd treat the gps data as the "best truth you'll get" and if it causes the odd glitch in benchmarks, WSW, etc so be it.
