This could be the dullest blog I've ever written, although my wife has reassuringly pointed out that I've written far duller ones
Fetch has Google Analytics installed, which generates all sorts of reports that a nerd like me can have an indecent amount of fun with.
Anyway, screen width stats go like this:
0-400px = 27%
401-1000px = 21%
1001-1400px = 29%
1401px+ = 23%
So 48% of Fetchies have to do some sort of zooming in order to see the full width of our current pages, which are a fixed 1000 pixels wide. Right then, that's given me a bit more incentive to get my responsive design mojo going

Last week, I blogged about updating the site to a responsive design. If you want to go back and read it (and you probably should, if you've not read it already), here's the link: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/blog-view.php?id=3&m=4&y=2016#blog351280
The next step is to look at all the main pages on the site, and plan which ones would need to be included in the update, and which ones could cope with being a bit of a mess until I got around to them. So I started building a site map:
And as you can see, it gets big pretty quick - and there are hundreds more pages in backwaters across the site. The solution really is to look at the numbers, and work out which pages get the most visits, and work from there.
The good news is that I've converted a fair bit already, including just about all of the forum, and a good chunk of the main training pages - the latter has taken a lot of effort, as there's such a lot of information crammed into a small space. Some of the pages will convert pretty easily, I'm hoping.
I think one of the things that you'll notice on the desktop site when I finally get to the point of uploading the changes, is that the form fields and text will be a bit bigger, and more spaced out. Old school web layouts (which is what we have currently) use pixel-based widths, so it's easier to squeeze things into smaller spaces (matron). But in order to be flexible for different screen sizes, it's better to work in percentages (so an entry field in a form occupies say 90% of the box that it lives in).
The plan then, is to make as many updates as I can on my test machine, and take special skin-thickening medicine for a couple of days, then put everything live. Then the real testing takes place I'm thinking this is still a couple of weeks away though.
Right then, enough gassing - I've got pages to convert

Dio - please don't feel rotten - none of any of this was a dig at you either. Making a change and then people not liking changes is something that I am totally used to. You lot are the best testing department there is, and Fetch only works because of this. Look at the forum notifications thing. I made a change that worked for me and the way I use the site, but it was only when I put it live that I got the information about how the rest of you use stuff, so I was able to poke it around some more until I got a better solution. I voted yes, but it does depend on how you ask the question. I answered as if it were 9 years ago, when watching the FLM, it made me want to do a marathon. But then I did one, and another one, or two, and VLM and some ultras. And now, no, I don't want to do it again, thank you! Well done all you Fetchpointers. One of the best parts of my VLM experience! GHappyG(rrr)12:44pm, 25th Apr 2016

I have also been there, done that and got the (massively oversized and quite horrible) Tshirt. I do not want to do it again, but I spent years, before I 'became' a runner, watching it on the TV and longing to have a go at that some day. My love affair with the event ended in disillusion and disenchantment, as love affairs so often do. Having done several other, very different, marathons before and since running London, I discovered that I much prefer a very different sort of event, without the charity circus and the noisy, crowded course. But if I hadn't watched 'the' marathon on the TV for all those years, perhaps I would never have started running at all - let alone run a marathon - so my answer is 'no', but a qualified no, if that's allowed.Schnecke

We're all a bit knackered after an early start this morning, so it's an early night here at Fetch Towers. I'll blog in more detail tomorrow, but I just wanted to say a big thank you on behalf of me and Katie, to everyone involved in the London Fetchpoint - and a huge well done to all the runners. I absolutely loved being there, and the joy and support all round was really something special. As I have become used to saying (but never to the point where I take it for granted), you all ROCK! Here's a thing. Of all the page views on the forum since the start of the year, only about 5% of them are going via the different categories (chat, train, race, clinic etc). So do I ditch them, or do I keep them? There's only one way to find out. Poll!

RH - that's a really good point. But I think so long as we keep the bit where the thread is categorised when it's created, and keep the bit that allows you to filter out the categories you don't want, then it should work the same, more or less.fetcheveryone

Just a few notes, for those that might be interested. I promise that I will ignore any comments about apps
I've been slowly nudging parts of the site into line, in preparation for making the site responsive to the type of device that you, dear user, are using to access it. So for example, on a nice big desktop screen, pages will render as normal - but if you look at the very same page on a mobile, it should (when I release the changes) reformat itself to be as usable as possible.
Example? My favourite has always been the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk). Have a look at it in a desktop browser, but grab the side of your browser, and make it narrower. You should see the content on the page leap about. Of course, it's not normal behaviour to resize your browser all the time - but it illustrates how the site presents itself, depending on the available space.
The stopgap approach for Fetch has been the mobile site: m.fetcheveryone.com - but there are a few reasons why this is undesirable:
1) either I have to force you onto it when I detect a mobile browser, or you have to make the choice to switch. Pain in the ass either way.
2) every time I make an amendment, bug fix or add/remove a page, I have to remember to do it in two places, test it twice (lol), and then maintain it. This is a royal pain in the ass.
3) search engines: although you can tell them all about your mobile version, they still seem to prefer everything in one place too.
So in a couple of weeks, I'll be making some updates to a lot of pages that you hold dear. The forum, the training log, race listings, blogs, user profiles, fmail, and so on - clearing up all the big hitters first, and moving down through the list of most-used pages until everything is up to date. It's not fiddling for the sake of it, and I will try VERY hard to avoid foisting any functional changes on you. My hope is that for those of you on desktop (54.5%), there will be virtually no difference; and that those of you on mobile (about 26.9%) should have a much more navigable experience, without having to switch to a noticeably dimmed-down version of the site. And in between, those on tablets (18.6%) should see some minor differences, and can have lots of fun switching from portrait to landscape mode
A bit more statty stuff - one of the figures I look at is 'bounce rate' - that's the percentage of people who arrive at any page on the site, and then clear off again without going any further. Ours is 26.6% (all these numbers are for Jan-Mar 2016), which seems to be pretty good But if you break that down, it's 25.6% on desktop, 23.0% on tablet, but 31.1% on mobile. Significantly higher?
Sure, there are mitigating factors. Mobile browsing is often curtailed by signal, or by the simple demand for information quickly, or by the need to use both hands to wipe your backside. But I do hope that by making our site more usable on mobile, we can keep a few of those visitors around for a little bit longer

I think the bounce rate on mobiles might be higher because - if you're anything like as fat-thumbed as me - you'll use a mobile to quickly look something up but for typing in the forum and blogs, you'll need a laptop.Oranj8:14am, 21st Apr 2016
I'm pleased to report another fun weekend of running here
On Saturday, I took my first stint as Run Director at Bedford parkrun, despite having been Event Director for over two months now. I thought I was going to hate standing up on the stool and doing the briefing, but it was actually fun. The run itself passed without incident (as they almost always do), although we caught a few people out by nearly starting at 9am Note to all: we're trying to start as close to 9am as possible these days - spread the word
And then on Sunday, it was the Sandy 10 - my third year in a row. I like this race, despite the sadistic hill that crops up in miles 2 and 9. I arrived just after 9, and as I walked into the venue (the local upper school) I was reminded why I like it so much - it felt like I knew loads of people I chatted to some nice Fetchies including DocMoye, hurricanehamlyn and Jinksy - who, I'm pleased to report, all got PBs (Ok, so DM told me before the run that it was her first 10 miler, but hey!) and quite a few people who smiled and waved (I'm really bad with names, but the faces were all smiling, so that's good)
After the usual safety pin faffage, and a bit of chat, it was time to get to the start. It's about half a mile, so it's about ideal for a warm up, so I trotted along, trying to do a few little knee raises and heel flicks, to make sure everything was still attached.
All too soon, I was hemmed into the middle of a bunch of runners - and got all my nerves in one go. I didn't feel quite ready. But too late. We were off.
1) 1m - 7:29(7:29/m) 163/173bpm
My goal for the day was to get under 7:54/mile, in order to get a PB - but a lot of stuff was pointing at the fact that I could run 7:4X, and get away with it. But anyway, I overcooked that first mile, which probably didn't help with the second.
2) 1m - 8:17(8:17/m) 164/183bpm
It's difficult to say how much I dislike this mile of the course. It takes you up by about 40 metres, dropping you back down a few midway, so that you feel twice as heavy, and then taking you back up another sharp little evil twin. The race flattens out after this, before going back down the same hill - so it also fools you into thinking that you've maybe done most of the hard work. But there's still 8 miles to go - and a lot can happen in that time.
3) 1m - 7:36(7:36/m) 165/175bpm
4) 1m - 7:43(7:43/m) 173/177bpm
But hey ho, I'm recovering from the hill now, and cruising along at a decent pace. We go past a field that smells of very strong cheese. Did anyone else get that? My watch is staying mostly in line with the mile markers, which is useful, and I'm building up a bit of a buffer to keep me on the right side of my PB. I get a bit of cramp under my ribs, but I'm holding on nicely, and there's a very gentle downhill section, which is my favourite kind
5) 1m - 7:44(7:44/m) 175/181bpm
This mile was a bit of a turning point - not least because it's half way. There a few minor undulations, but I got passed by a couple of people, and I think my head went down a bit. I ran past the donkey sanctuary, where the sole donkey was running up and down the fence - I can't make up my mind whether he was doing so joyfully, or because he feels compelled.
6) 1m - 7:54(7:54/m) 169/180bpm
This is starting to feel tough now, and despite my best efforts, I know I'm not in control, I'm just sliding down a slope, and trying to keep as much of a grip as I can.
7) 1m - 8:02(8:02/m) 148/179bpm
Whoa! Over 8 now? Suddenly, the average pace that I'd built up is starting to erode, and I'm not having much fun.
8) 1m - 8:13(8:13/m) 88/93bpm
Yep, this is starting to go pretty badly. My HRM took one of its several trips to La La Land during this mile. People rushing by, and I'm stuck in reverse.
9) 1m - 8:14(8:14/m) 113/179bpm
Ok, so I'm back at the hilly bit again, and this time there's more down than up. But the downhills are steep enough that it's still pretty uncomfortable, and there's a lot of effort going into just staying in control. The net effect is probably good, but it's not at all like I'm pretending to be an aeroplane, with a helicopter hat. I go through the 9 mile marker knowing that I need to get a sub-8 for the last mile to get my PB. There's a sniff of a chance, but it's no more than that, and it's accompanied by the smell of burning, coming from deep inside me.
10) 1m - 7:42(7:42/m) 178/186bpm
11) 0.02m - 8(7:16/m) 185/186bpm
The last mile is also fairly downhill (not that I noticed on the way out), but a lot gentler, which makes for slightly easier running. The lap pace on my watch is egging me on, and I get a shout from Rosehip, and all the marshals are being amazingly supportive (thank you all!) in their silly hats. 800m to go, and it feels like some sort of hell. 400m, and I'm desperately trying to do the maths, convince myself, and looking for the signal from the marshal up ahead that means I can cross the road. It comes, and I go - and I yell, like a jockey whipping his horse, except that I'm the horse too. The people who hear me give me an echoing shout of encouragement, and it's the blue touch paper that gets me over the line, desperate seconds inside my PB.
Hopefully.
I sat for a while, as various friendly faces came by, including Nightjar, who'd run a stonker, and we sat for a while and recovered - the lady handing out water fetched us a banana each, and we sat on the kerb retracing our steps, and regaining the wherewithal.
The chip timing system had a jazzy printing system at the finish, where you could key your number in, and get a print out of your time. I knew that a second either way at the start, and likewise at the finish could have made the difference, so I queued up for mine. I was a bit confused when it gave me a chip time of 1:18:30, where I'd timed myself as just a few seconds inside my PB, not 32. I emailed them later, and they've since downgraded me to a chip time of 1:18:50 or 1:18:51, depending on which link you follow on the Sandy website. So I'm still a bit unsure about the actual time that I got - but I've gone with 1:18:51 in my race portfolio, with the proviso that I'm gonna have to go beat it soon
As always, one of my other favourite things about this race is the t-shirt, which is always a bit of an event in itself - and this year, they've not let us down. So many race shirts are uninspiring sponsor logos on one-size fits all pillow cases. Here's the design:
I got home, and Katie took me for the customary post-Sandy Macdonalds (I say that, in the hope that it will become a nailed-on tradition). I won a free ice-cream in the Monopoly game, and got ice cream head on the walk home - but it was all worth it Same time next year, Sandy.

Glad you enjoyed it - I'm glad they need so many of us to marshal - I hate Sand lane with a vengeance and would never chose to "race" up it - you did aceRosehip10:10am, 11th Apr 2016

I think the seconds might be the way race results are done - you go through with 45 on the clock, which is rounded up to 46. See it on the TV quite a lot with I think it was the Great North Run record being equalled in the women's race last year. It's an officiating thing, so what I do is just accept it as that's how it isboyband6666
Either way nice work on the PB; my usual celebration for those is for a family outing to KFC, so glad it isn't just me with the junk food!10:30am, 11th Apr 2016 -

I followed you into the hall at 9am and thought "I think that's Fetch" then lost you!! WJ fetchies rather took over it seems. A number of us had similar issues around the timing and it does seem to revolve around the second mat just after the start. Well done on hanging on for that PB. I loved the Tshirt, and the marshals were fab. I checked back to see when I had run this previously, and it was years ago! I was so glad the donkeys were still there - I saw two miniature ones as well, but you were probably moving too fast to spot themSchnecke4:34pm, 11th Apr 2016

We've been having fun this weekend with bottle rockets. I thought I'd explain a bit about how we got on, in case anyone fancies having a go. I'd also like to dedicate this blog to the folks from Mythbusters. Their show might have been cancelled, but they've started something that has definitely not stopped. Thank you.
We got started by going to Lidl to buy some 2L bottles of water. These are 17p each, so we got two - one to build our rocket, and the other for transporting water to the park. Interesting side note: typically, these bottles will hold up to 150psi before something fails.
Then we took a stroll to our new favourite shop, Zak's DIY - which is as awesome as this:
We don't know whether the person behind the counter is Zak, or merely one of his earthly representatives - but his encyclopaedic knowledge of everything inside the shop was very helpful. Alas, they don't sell corks - but when I explained what we needed, he suggested we try the bit of rubber that goes on the bottom of a walking stick. This is apparently called a ferrule - a bit like Will Ferrule, or Ferrule Williams. I instantly felt at home. Cost 90p.
Back at home, we constructed the rocket. The pointy bit at the top is just a circular bit of cardboard from a cereal box, folded in on itself, to make a shape like a Chinese sun hat. Then we covered it in duct tape, and attached it to the bottom of the bottle. The wings are also just bits of cereal box - and then the whole thing gets a healthy dose of duct tape to give it a bit of strength, and to make it look epic. As you can see from the pic, the ferrule just about fits inside the bottle opening.
Luckily I have a decent track pump that I can attach a football needle to - so I used the needle to make a small hole in the ferrule - and that gave us all the essentials - except for a way of holding the rocket steady whilst we pumped. But we got lucky - our Christmas tree stand was just about perfect. Not only does it fit the girth of a 2L bottle, but it also has a space for feeding in the hose from the pump - so it's made for the job. If you haven't got something like this to hand, you could always surround the rocket with a few bamboo canes to keep it vaguely upright; or you could make the wings longer and stiffer, so that the rocket can stand on them.
The boy was carried away with the excitement, but I was totally unsure whether it would work. I had no idea whether it would hold together when under pressure, or whether the ferrule would pop out too easily. We did a couple of pumps to test whether it would pressurise, and it was very exciting to see that it did. Our back garden is pokey and wild, so we headed to the local park, past some staring bigger boys, and set up, nervously.
The rule of thumb with bottle rockets is to fill about a third with water - it's a trade off between having enough water to push out of the bottom, and not making them too heavy to take off. There's probably a chart somewhere. Sod that. We just pumped. There's a very disconcerting bubbling noise when you start, as the air you're adding rises up through the water, and the rocket wiggles about on the launch pad as it adjusts itself, and undoes the top button of its trousers as the pressure rises.
It's incredibly tense when you have no idea what's going to happen. The pressure mounted, and with every pump, I got more nervous, and got the boy to stand further and further back, not knowing whether we were about to be lashed by lacerating plastic at any moment. 60psi, 70psi, 80psi... that's more than I put in my bike tyres. Is anything going to happen? One more pump, up to 90psi. One more pump... BANG. We're showered in spray, and the rocket has vanished!
It's hard not to imagine at first that the whole thing didn't just disintegrate - but up above, a black shape is tumbling back to earth. It's lost the "Poopnik 1" sign we attached to it, but it's otherwise in great condition. The ferrule popped out, and is still stuck on the pump needle. We've got more water. We can go again!
Some key learnings:
1) after a while, and for some reason, the ferrule starts to slip out of the bottle that little bit easier, so that we started losing altitude. We made up for this by duct taping the ferrule into position. The rocket takes off when it's built up enough pressure to tear through the duct tape. This is an exciting prospect!
2) adding food colouring to the water is a great way to make the exhaust look amazing when it bursts out.
3) The bottle bulges in quite a scary way as the pressure builds up. We put strips of duct tape on it - and as it expanded, they separated to create gaps between the tape. A continuous spiral of duct tape all around the bottle would help to make it stronger and feel a bit safer.
Some ideas for next time:
We have a cardboard tube from a roll of carpet, that my neighbour left out, over a year ago. A 2L bottle of Lidl water fits into it perfectly. For our next experiment, we want to see whether we can make our rocket go higher by using it like a gun barrel.
We did try adding a parachute - but it got a bit floppy, and contributed to a very low altitude attempt. It'd be good to find a good technique for adding a parachute. This was part of an experiment to put an egg in space (Tim Beak) and return him safely to Earth. Tim is sadly no longer with us, but remains forever in our thoughts.
Great, kid. Don't get cocky
EDIT: I've added a video where The Boy shows off his dance moves:

Fantastic! We have Brian's DIY shop near us - it's just like Zak's shop and Brian and his staff know where everything is. If we don't know where to buy something from, Brian's is the place to go. I wonder if they are related?GimmeMedals7:17am, 3rd Apr 2016

There is a shop like that in Pembrokeshire, at Newgale. If we ever go that way on holiday we have to visit the shop. Even if we don't need anything when we go in, we always find something that we do need while we're in there. Goldings in town is a bit too organised to have the same feel.Elsie Too
