The lollipop update

4:14pm, 27 Sep 2017
If you survived my vLog last Friday, you'll know that I am putting together some updates to the detailed (aka 'glasses' for all you old schoolers) view of the training log. Here's an example to show you how it's looking in the testing lab (click it to see a slightly bigger version):

The image shows my run at the Fenland 10 a few years back. The green splits early on are a bridge over the dual carriageway. I made it to about 5.5 miles feeling pretty cocky, then turned the corner into the wind, and everything went to sh*t. You can even see the little burst of speed I managed in the last quarter of a mile.

The colours on the graph tie in with the columns (which can be adjusted to be whatever split size you like), and also with the table of splits below the graph.

This next image shows a comparison to the existing log, for my attempt at Bedford Half Marathon in December 2016. It's broken down into half-kilometre splits (again, click it for a bigger version):

In my opinion, it gives a clearer idea of what happened during this run - it's picked out the long downhill at 10 miles pretty nicely (in the map and on the graph), and shows the wheels falling off as I chugged up all the other hills that I'd forgotten about since the previous year.

I'm pretty excited by this. What do you reckon?

  • I like it. But green for for slow, red for fast? For a race, intuitively that seems the wrong way around as it makes fast look "bad" (living in a world of RAG rated reports etc as I do) Perhaps its just because they are bar-charts it looks odd, as I've clearly been happy enough with it on the graphs up to now!!

  • Ah, but green = easy, and red = danger.

  • Indeed. I think its one of those areas where traditional colour coding doesn't always work intuitively. So long as the graphs highlight variation well (which they do) the colours are an afterthought. Might it be feasible to design it so that the presented colour choices are user selectable from a small palette when defining the colour boundaries?

  • Love the pace-colours on the map, similar to Nike+.

Not so sure about the graph, I think I prefer the coloured wiggly line. Are you still planning to super-impose that over the top? I also like the current layout of having the colour key next to the graph. I think the bar chart might look better without the gaps.

On failing gracefully

9:07am, 26 Sep 2017
Copying this here, to see if it'll bring about more responses...

I'm looking for a wide variety of example FIT files that have pauses in them (either auto or manual). If you've got one, please could you email it to me - ian@... (you know the rest, and I'd rather the spammers didn't). If you can include some information about what sort of pauses are in the file, and what watch you have, that'd be epic. Ta.

I have 2-3 already, but would like to see ones from a wide range of watches - so the more people that can send me one, the better really. It seems that no two watches generate exactly the same kind of detail in the FIT file - so when I add code to handle pauses, I want to make sure it works well or at least fails gracefully.

The pauses have tricked the map into thinking I'd given up about a mile from home. I definitely felt like dropping down at the side of the road, but I did eventually make it home.

Training Log View Update

1:48pm, 20 Sep 2017
This week I've been in Photoshop, mocking up this:

full-size version here: fetcheveryone.com/images/new_training_log_view.jpg

On the existing version of the training log, there were five coloured boxes - cyan, green, yellow, orange and red. The purpose of these boxes was to allow you to set yourself different training zones based on pace - so that you could see when you reached each zone. However, I felt like the way this is put across is unnecessarily complicated, but also that we weren't making enough of them. This was the seed that brought about this redesign.

Here are my proposed changes:

Let's start with the multi-coloured column graph just below the map (I call it the lollipop graph, because when I started, I had it looking like a rocket lolly). It's designed to be a combination of the existing 'Split Breaker', and the current wiggly graph. The column colours represent the pace you achieved during that chunk of your run. Overlaying the columns, there'll be the more detailed wiggly line that you're used to, along with a dotted one that shows your average pace throughout the run (excuse my bad Photoshop attempt at making a dotted line).

As you've probably already noticed, the route marked on the map will show these colours too, so you can see where you were when the wheels came off.

You'll be able to control the number of columns (i.e. the size of the splits) using the little grey buttons just above the graph on the right, and you can switch the graph from using distance on the x-axis to using time instead, if you prefer. You can also change the thresholds at which the bars change colour, using the grey button above the graph on the left. I figured this was something you wouldn't change all that often.

Just beneath the graph, there's a little bar that shows what proportion of your run/ride was in each colour segment. My thoughts are that this can replace the 'Pace Bands' graph. I know this might seem a bit shocking to those that like the Pace Bands graph - but having changed watches recently, I should tell you that the existing one is largely at the mercy of the accuracy and smoothing done by your GPS watch. I've recently switched from a TomTom to a Suunto - and I think the data on the latter is unsmoothed - to the extent that the pace bands graph as it currently stands becomes virtually pointless.

Below the coloured bar is a larger section devoted to showing you your splits. I've applied the same colour coding on the left-hand side of each split as you'll find on the columns. I wanted to give these more room than they currently have, as there's a lot of information to display (particularly if you're tracking HR, cadence, power etc).

On the right-hand-side of all the boxes on the graph, you'll notice a little down/up arrow. These will expand/collapse the different sections, and the site will remember these preferences.

However, even when closed, each segment (where appropriate) will give you some summary data - see the 'Heart Rate' box as an example.

I've opened out the 'Cadence' box as an example of how this might look. The number of columns should tie in with the number you've chosen in the lollipop graph above. Below the columns, there's a similar bar that shows you the proportion of time spent in each cadence band.

The HR and Power graphs will be in a similar style to the cadence graph (although I think the HR graph will have a bit more to it e.g. the ability to set and see the various thresholds that you'll know all about if you've read anything about HR training).

The reason I've done this in Photoshop (rather than coding it), and why I'm writing this blog right now, is because none of it is set in stone. I need your feedback to make this work, and to make it as good as it possibly can be. So now's your chance to make your suggestions, and to give your view on this new layout. If you've seen a feature elsewhere that you'd like me to incorporate in this page, let me know. For the sake of limiting scope, this is *just* a page that lists one run/ride/swim - so don't be expanding the brief. I will be ignoring requests for cycling jerseys etc :-)

Over to you.

  • I'm slightly concerned this might be a solution looking for a problem, but perhaps I'm wrong...
I *like* that (I think) you're going to separate the elevation graph from the other ones it currently shares a space with, because it's not great at the moment. I'd ask that it can be a bit 'longer' (in the y-axis) than 1-2", because it currently makes even very hilly routes look kinda flat. You can make it larger now, since anyone who objects can make it go away, right?
Same *like*, with the same request, applies to the HR graph too - let it breathe, please.

As you're designing this page for improvements, there's 2 long-standing issues that I find frustrating. Do this take you near those bits of code? They are:
    a) that the 'time' is always wrong by an hour on importing from Garmin connect (for me, some others, don't know how widespread)
    b) time stopped on the watch is ignored by you when you import. So lap splits are wrong (since they include watch stopped time), pace graphs are wrong for the same reason. This one's really fundamental for a training log.

  • I like this, but agree with PtB about the elevation graphs (although for me it's more about wanting to show off *how bloody hard the hills I did were*, rather than it not giving me the required information).

  • Thanks for all the positive feedback :-)

ptb - I have just made the elevation and HR graphs on the existing page twice the height. It might not be obvious on the image above (because the route I used was flat as a pancake), but I had increased the height of the elevation profile. On Garmin time... as a rule, the newer models include the information on time zone, but the older ones don't - at least not anywhere I've seen. On pause time... let me have a think, and see if I can tackle this one. An up-to-date FIT file would be useful if you have one.

  • My main gripe, is a fairly generic one that I doubt will gain much favour. I still use a laptop with a nice wide screen 99% of the time, not a phone/tablet with a narrow screen. This redesign ( along with a lot of other recent changes ) seems to be built for the portrait screen people, not the landscape people - lots of things that were side by side, that I could see all together, are now below each other and will require scrolling.
Out of interest, do you have any stats as to what %age of users are now phone/tablet users ? As I said, this is a common "problem" on a lot of websites where they assume everyone is now on portrait screens. Perhaps I'm just a luddite.......
Aside from the above, agree with PtB about excluding paused time from some of the calcs, eg today I ran just over a mile to meet someone , where I waited for them, then went on a run. My Beats per Mile for that 2nd mile are huge as I was stood still for about 3 mins, but those beats were still counting even although watch was paused. Can send a file if needed.
Regarding the Elevation graph - not all of us live at sea-level, yet the graph always starts at sea level. To show the gains more, could the graph y-axis start at the minimum height of the run, rather than at 0m ?
    K5 Gus
    8:58pm, 20th Sep 2017
  • Like many others I like the speed colours on the route graph - quickly informative. K5 Gus's idea about elevation y-axis starting at minimum height of run sounds like a good idea (or maybe [0.95*min. height], to ensure no 'bottoming out' of the elevation polygon).

  • Hi Fetch,
I would not like to loose the "split breaker chart" and the ability to set the splits (good for checking intervals). Also I would like to see the time highlighted when you hover over the graphs (today it shows the speed, pace, distance and height...but not time) why? because if I want to know I ran the second half faster how can I tell.

  • Things I wouldn't want to see lost from the existing log - smoothable graphs, benchmarks, split tool (0.1m, 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 5m etc thing).

Things I like about this - new colours, coloured sections of run, overall "nicer"

Things I'd still like to see - grade adjusted pace (somehow!) to reflect ups / downs.

Things I always love about Fetch - constantly being re-looked at, engaging with user base, creative ideas a-plenty!

  • Fab vloggage! The tag cloud is excellent - all year I thought I'd developed PF after double parkrun on NY Day, but from the tag cloud I picked 'heel' and there was an entry from 27th Dec which said: "Deferred from yesterday, as I had a pain in my left heel, which had gone today" - so it was there earlier than I remembered. So, I think I'll start to tag all aches like a proper hyperchondriac, for future reference :-)

Training Log Tags - Live

10:16am, 12 Sep 2017
The tagging system is now live - and I've also been indexing old training logs to give you a ready-made tag cloud. It's quite computationally heavy, so I've unapologetically started with the subscribers, but am working my way through everyone.

Some of you might prefer not to have any tags, or to create your own. If that's the case, drop me some feedback and I can clean you out :-)

New features since yesterday's blog include the ability to rename a tag (so you can amalgamate similar ones), and the ability to delete non-useful ones.

Shout out your suggestions as always. It's been quite fascinating to see which words have stood out in my cloud :-)

  • How are you indexing the old training logs - i.e. where are you getting the tags from if they don't exist already (is it from the narrative in the split summary, or are you grabbing from things like the 3 things seen today etc?)?
    larkim
    10:55am, 12th Sep 2017
  • It's purely from the notes field. I took a large sample of data, worked out the most popular words, filtered out "if", "and", "but", and everything that felt irrelevant. Then I took this word list, and used it as my keyword search to build tags. So it won't be perfect by any means, but in my experience has provided some useful searches.
    fetcheveryone
    11:04am, 12th Sep 2017
  • Likely to be fairly empty for me then from the start as I've not really bothered inputting anything into the notes mostly, though I have done a few recently.

I like the functionality to delete / merge tags, a very handy thing.

fetcheveryone.com/training-tag.php is a useful link to the cloud page. Sadly having only updated a few my cloud is currently reading "canal easy flat recovery slippery wife" which would be intriguing if it wasn't so mundane in truth!

  • It's very cool now that I've seen the tag cloud. Is it only "real" words? So "lurgiified" meaning having the lurgy, i.e. being sick, wouldn't get tagged? Fascinoodling stuff though. I will have to stop making up words! :-) G
    Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)
    12:46pm, 12th Sep 2017
  • I took a mahoosive sample of training log entries, and from that made a list of the most popular words, then filtered out the pointless ones (if, a, the, and, etc). I was left with a list of useful training descriptors, and I used those to tag everyone's log. So unless lots of people used 'lurgified', it's unlikely to turn up. But there's nothing to stop you using it as a tag :-)

  • Like!
One tiny feedback - the search to find a tag-word clicked on from the cloud (presumably) is working perfectly, including being case-insensitive (nice). But the bolding of the word within the training entry is case-sensitive, so the tag word doesn't be highlighted if it began with a capital.

Training Log Tags

3:52pm, 11 Sep 2017
[Before I get onto the main subject of the blog, I wonder if any of you have noticed the slight change in the blog URL structure - you can see it a bit more clearly if you go look at an older month in someone's blog. It might just give you a quicker way of navigating.]

Anyway... here's what's coming soon to the training log:

I get quite a few requests for different categories to be added to the training log. Perhaps the most common one (until I added it), was the ability to class a run as a parkrun. It's not something I use myself, as I think that when I run a parkrun, I am usually either treating it as a race (sorry world), or a tempo run*, or I'm just running round with someone (usually Katie) and having a chat. So I class my runs based on what sort of run I do. There was also a request for "club run" - same logic. What are you doing on your club run?

But forcing folks to adopt what I see as logical isn't the most flexible approach - which is why I'm introducing tagging to the training log. On every entry, you'll be able to add as many tags as you like. So your parkrun can be both "parkrun" and "tempo", or whatever. If your knee goes funny, you can tag it with "knee" as well - and then see all your "knee" entries. Or "guts", or "frosty", or "dog", or "ankle", or "great", or "shit", or whatever you'd like. When you've built up a bit of a history, you can click "ankle", and see all the runs where you've mentioned your ankle. Maybe you only "ankle" when you also "offroad". Maybe "guts" is correlated with "hangover". Maybe "awesome" is connected to "fetchvest" :-)

I've made a quick page** to allow you to see all your training entries matching a particular tag. Here's an example of how it looks:

It also includes a tag cloud so you can surf your tags, and see which words become most popular.

This stuff isn't live yet, but should be available within the next few days.

*I've always called them tempo runs - but plenty of people call them threshold runs, or "bloody hard" :-)

**quick page = it'll probably look like that for about a year.

...and you lot have collectively put £905 towards beating pancreatic cancer and giving a fitting tribute to Doctor K. It's clear from the various blogs and comments all around the site just what he meant to folks. Thank you everyone. Here's the Justgiving page in case you need it: justgiving.com

In running news, it was wonderful to see so many familiar (and a few unfamiliar) faces at the Derby Fetch Mile. Here are some Facebook pics, courtesy of sLickster:

facebook.com

Thanks to everyone who came along to run, support or just to eat cake. There were some nice PBs, and Jude's kids must have run a half marathon by the time we'd finished! D2's Indi set the current Fetch record for the canine 75m (6.73s), and although I was too busy to eat any cake whilst timekeeping or running, I set my own personal record for the number of different cakes tried in the space of five minutes (4). I've managed to leave the results up north, but I should be able to make them available on Thursday evening.

Things are shaping up for the Cardiff Mile now - October 28th, 2pm-4pm. It's at an indoor 200m track (the National Indoor Athletic Centre: http://www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/about/sport/Pages/National-Indoor-Athletics-Centre-(NIAC).aspx ), with banked curves - so you can pretend you're Lightning McQueen.

It would be lovely to see lots of Fetchies there, and hopefully to add some more of you to my sticker book. My dad and sister will hopefully be running, and my mam is already planning her bakes!

Here's the listing to add to your portfolio - be sure to put a prediction in:

Thanks all.

EDIT: For this evening of you in the Bolton area, the funeral will be on Thursday 14th September at 3pm, at Overdale Crematorium, Bolton. (west chapel). Any donations (in lieu of flowers), to Pancreatic Cancer UK, which may be given to the funeral director.

Katie and I will be making a donation to a cancer charity - we're just trying to find out whether there's an existing pot we can add to, or if not, it's been suggested that we could set up a justgiving page for Fetchies to donate. Just waiting to hear back (from our own bigleggy) on what the best approach is - will share the info when I get it. So sad to see such a lovely man gone too soon :-( Here's his Member of the Month interview from earlier this year: fetcheveryone.com/motm_interview.php?id=3207

  • I think (I hope) that it would be a nice thing to have something where fellow fetchies can make a contribution, or say some words, or just read quietly about any fellow member who passes on. It's very hard to know what happens to people you meet, who you know (even fleetingly) on a social site and perhaps we all would feel it relevant that we can say goodbye to virtual friends. Of course lots of us have made friendships that are much more than "virtual" some people I have never even met I feel are a huge influence in things I do in my life, and I am glad to talk to them, glad to know them. Some of my best friends I met at first "virtually". Quiet thoughts, private writings that we share in our blogs are a huge window into our own worlds. Condolences to all

  • Turfwars sounds interesting, but how big are each of the areas (same as conquerise or smaller like the hexagons)? Also for FESE is there a table to show who the top100 people are at the moment?

  • I think maybe 100 in a square mile. I don't think there's an overall mileage table at the moment, but that'll be my first step if I go down that route.

Derby Mile - tomorrow!

12:01pm, 1 Sep 2017
[sent out to everyone who's signed up]

Hi everyone,

Just a note to say that I’m looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow at Moorways (DE24 9HY) from 2pm til 4pm. I’ll be there from about 1.30 with my boy to get our banner set up :-)

If you’d like to run, please make sure you’ve entered a time prediction (or if you can’t see how to do that, let me know). As a rough guide, you can look at your best recent 5k pace, and knock 20-30 seconds off. This will be helpful for me to put you into the right heat, so that you get people of a similar standard to run with. If you’re not up for thrashing yourself, but still fancy a run around, enter a time anyway – you can be helpful as a pacer :-)

If there’s time after the mile races, we’ll do some 400’s – and if there are any kids, we can do some kids races too. There’s even a sand pit if anyone wants to attempt the long jump or just make sandcastles.

After the running, we’ll head to The Bonnie Prince (166 Swarkestone Road, Derby DE73 5UE) for a shandy if anyone fancies it.

You don’t need to contribute to the cost of the track, but if you happen to want a Fetch mug, buff or shirt, my boy will be custodian of the merch, and will gladly take your cash :-)

You’re welcome to bring cake, and to consume cake made by others at your own risk ;-)

And it’s not too late to invite your club mates, parkrun mates, or family members. To come along, they just need to sign up to Fetch, and add this race to their portfolio: fetcheveryone.com/viewracedetails.php?id=1645370

Cheers,
Ian
