It'd be very helpful for me to know which devices you folks are using to record your runs. If you've got a minute, and *if* you use some form of GPS device, could you choose an answer from this poll:

I want to let you know that I am investigating the possibility of making use of the Garmin Connect API, which will significantly simplify the import process for you, my lovely users!
As you might know, Garmin are encouraging their users to adopt Garmin Express, which imports your runs directly to the Garmin Connect website. This has been a bit of a tough process, as it's caused a few problems for those who are used to importing their runs directly to Fetch.
However, the Garmin Connect API allows third-party websites like Fetch to make contact with the Garmin Connect database, and to automatically receive your runs and rides whenever they are uploaded. So within a minute or so of you syncing your watch on your computer, Fetch will have received a copy and stuck it in your training log. All you'd need to do is give your permission for Fetch to talk to Garmin on your behalf, and the rest is taken care of.
As I've said, let's call this no more than an 'investigation' at the moment, as there are lot of things to get sorted. But fingers crossed, I should have some more news on this soon.

FAQ: I don't use the Garmin site, I just put my runs on Fetch. How does this affect me?fetcheveryone
Answer: Garmin's move to create Garmin Express has come about at least partly because it's the stated policy of the big web browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome etc) to move away from 'plugins'. So Garmin are just ensuring that when this happens, there will still be a direct route from your computer to Garmin website for your data. As things stand, Garmin Express leaves all your runs stored on your computer, so even if the Garmin Communicator Plugin stops working, you should still be able to upload your files to Fetch one at a time, using the FIT/TCX/GPX etc options in the 'Add Training' menu at the top of the page. Additionally, I am also working on a Fetch API, which opens up the possibility for any number of desktop apps (and dare I say it, smartphone apps) to upload data directly to Fetch.9:37am, 30th Sep 2014 -

FAQ: Will the existing import mechanisms still be available?fetcheveryone
I will definitely NOT switch anything off, and will leave links to older versions of stuff. As above, the continuation of the Garmin Communicator Plugin, and its support by web browsers is out of my hands.9:39am, 30th Sep 2014 -
FAQ: Will I need to register an account with Garmin?fetcheveryone
To use this new method yes you will, although you won't have to visit the Garmin site on a regular basis. In theory, you just have to create an account, authorise Fetch to speak to Garmin on your behalf, and then you never have to visit again. The new method means that your data is first stored on the Garmin website, and then copied to Fetch. As per previous FAQ, if you're unhappy with putting your data on other websites, you can still use the other methods of import to Fetch.9:42am, 30th Sep 2014 -

So what happens when I go for a hike? It will upload to Garmin as a run which I then need to edit.Molesy
If you suck it down from Garmin before I've edited it then will the various bits of Fetch that depend on knowing what type of activity it was get confuzzled?9:57am, 30th Sep 2014 -
Molesy - unless you hike at faster than your running pace, then I can't see any particular problems. Fetch will give you Conquercise zones, pick up Fetchpoint markers, measure your speed between checkpoints - but none of that should cause any problems if you're hiking. And if you're biking, so long as you've got your Garmin in bike mode, it should pick it up when it gets sucked in*.fetcheveryone

I'm in the same position as Martin. My 620 wirelessly syncs via Gamin Express, then automatically sends the activity to Strava. If it could do the same with Fetch, that would be really rather spiffing. I'm not a huge fan of Garmin software, but have to say Express usually works very well, notwithstanding some teething troubles and the very occasional hiccup.neufalabonk10:03am, 30th Sep 2014

I use Garmin express and it automatically syncs to myfitnesspal too, so I'm pleased about this, with the proviso that I can edit the entry afterwards as Garmin currently does not recognise the difference between a walk and a run- it uploads everything as a run.Podkin10:15am, 30th Sep 2014

The only reason I use Garmin Express is because my Garmin Swim uses an Ant+ Dongle. I upload my Runs/bikes through the Garmin connect app on my phone (Forerunner 220 and Edge 810 both connect to phone) and use that to sync to Garmin Connect. Loop TickingRecoil10:16am, 30th Sep 2014

GCP has been crashing for me on current laptop for months, so I do the manual upload a FIT file shizzle. I recently installed Garmin Express (cos Garmin wanted me to make sure I had latest firmware on my 310XT) and it puts the FIT file in a different place. I'll got add this in to the Problems Uploading from Garmin article in the Wiki (perhaps you could put your FAQs in there too, so it's all in one place, or at least link to it, cos will all have changed by then).Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)

I manually log a few things that interest me as they seem to (for me) to be an honest reflection of how hard I ran, one (METMax) comes from Firstbeat Athlete so we will forget that but Heart Rate Recovery and Training Effect come off the 620 although only Training Effect is visible in Connect. I would be very interested in these coming across automagically.The_Saint2:16pm, 30th Sep 2014

Re the Saint's comment: I've been unpicking FIT files recently and can make helpful noises about where to find the recovery heart rate & TE if you are interested, Fetch. (And have a python program that will pull that and TE out of a FIT file)Santa Badgey
Re Flanker's: There was a plugin at one point, the changes to the Garmin API with that being commercialized broke it and it is not going to be fixed as there isn't enough interest/money for the guy who wrote that plugin to finance the API fee, last I heard. I don't know whether they're planning to add the core sporttracks.mobi sync to the desktop version. The .mobi version is a long way behind the desktop version still, I agree.2:49pm, 30th Sep 2014 -

re mode - By realising I "needed" a garmin for different activities at different times I have ended up with one that defaults to each of my main activities - possibly not the best or easiest way around the problem but garmin connect knows my swim is for swimming, my 800 for biking and my 210 for running. I seem to remember the 210 can be set to bike mode but I found it easier to edit it afterward rather than messing about with the watch menu.Winded8:25pm, 30th Sep 2014

I'm not quite sure what question you are asking. What did I do? Nothing special, no IT skill required. I did it byWinded
- downloading it, different versions for Mac/pc, also some updates after first launch.
- installing it, reboot if necessary i.e click on icon & follow instructions
- letting it find ant+ garmin or plugging in other garmin
- when it finds the garmin fill in the details of the username & password, just follow the prompts
- it synchs, the run/ride/whatever is visible on garmin connect
- just leave it running, allow it to open on reboot - it uses very little resource
- next time just plug in the garmin and it will find it, synch etc. There is nothing to do except look at it on garmin connect (or wherever you set it up to be copied to from there) unless for some reason it is not finding your garmin, but that would be the same with the plugin.
I think this is just following the instructions. The notion is that garmin express replaces the plugin, since it works and is easier to use I don't see why I'd want to use the plugin.
What problem are you experiencing?11:26am, 1st Oct 2014 -
Or I guess if you don't want to leave it running then open it when you want to use it. But your watch has wireless upload, so why mess about opening garmin express every day, just check your email or something& it will happen in the background.Winded11:30am, 1st Oct 2014

for a 910 you'd be better with the Ant+ Agent and the plug-in (both Mac & PC versions work - I think the Mac is better) and getting rid of Express. Works for me and I've set it up for several others. Running Express alongside either/both the agent or plug-in seems very unreliable if it works at all.flanker11:36am, 1st Oct 2014

FWIW my stuff goes directly to Garmin from my 620 through the magic wi-fi, and then I use tapiirik to send it to Dropbox as a TCX file which I then use to upload to Fetch. It sounds a faff but it's not and, crucially, doesn't involve any cables or software (other than a browser).Grid1:32pm, 1st Oct 2014

Winded - people tend to end up running both as Garmin (either their support or a new device) says they have to install express, without making any mention of removing any previously installed ones first. I couldn't let yesterday go without a blog
It's been a busy week - Nottinghamshire (the boy), Portsmouth (father-in-law), Southampton (step son), and finally Draycote Water (cake)
We did a five miler here for Myton Hospice back in March, and this race (organised by Rotary) had a very similar feel to it. Smiling marshalls, quite a lot of new-ish runners wandering around, and just, you know, friendly.
Of course, it helped that there was a whole bunch of lovely Fetchies there, standing out in their anniversary tops It really does feel like having a nice slice of family wherever you go And talking of slices, there was a fabulous cake made by Elsie Too!
My race wasn't really a race - at no point did I set out to run at PB pace. I tried running a fairly quick parkrun on Saturday morning to see if I was over my cold, and the splits went something like 7:10, 7:30, 7:50 - and my throat was a bit claggy - so I didn't have any ambitions at 10k.
But I didn't want to just trot around - I wanted to push it a bit, and make it some sort of useful training - so I just tried to go with something like "comfortably hard".
1) 1m - 7:45(7:45/m) 153/174bpm
2) 1m - 7:48(7:48/m) 171/175bpm
3) 1m - 7:49(7:49/m) 174/179bpm
4) 1m - 7:58(7:58/m) 174/179bpm
5) 1m - 8:17(8:17/m) 175/179bpm
6) 1m - 8:25(8:25/m) 175/180bpm
7) 0.21m - 1:36(7:28/m) 179/183bpm
As you can see, that definition gradually widened as the race went on, and the undulations sucked the life out of me. None of them are massive, it's just the never-ending quantity of them. It was also feeling pretty warm, and the seemingly ever-present Draycote breeze had taken the day off. So my pace slackened off a bit, and the final turn before the very long finishing straight seemed to take FOR EVER to appear.
It was a lovely way to see the folks in front of and behind me though - and I saw Jigs cruising home like an express train to WIN the race and then TrudiP, who gave me a quick grin on her way to third lady! Then came Nightjar, claiming his 10k time for the club standard he's been chasing
Finally at 5.4 miles I made it onto the finishing straight, and within a few seconds I saw Mrs Jigs (also winning her age category) hot on my heels (normally I just have to run through the dust cloud she leaves as she Billy Whizzes off into the distance). My average pace had slowed to about 7:59/mile by this point, but I wanted to make sure I got in under 50 minutes, so I pushed as much as I could, and enjoyed my finish
Nightjar and I walked a little way back, and stood on the wall to cheer a few more in - and to shout encouragement to those on the lower path still making their way to the turn.
Elsie Too came through, running her first 10k for (nips off to check) at least three years, high-fiving mini-Too before chucking the logs onto the fire to make it home in under the hour Shortly after her came Silvershadow, the PB machine! This time it was another five minute chunk off her 10k PB, which she'd already beaten earlier this year. Everybody in front of SS, watch out!
Katie came beaming down the home straight, shepherding her running group into the pen for 1:06 - three very happy newbies, and one very proud running leader
At this point I had to go and dispense some hugs and get some status updates, so I don't think I saw Excitabubble and USB finish (sorry ) but one by one we all gathered at the foot of the banking, and told our tales. I nearly suffered fatal blushing when all of a sudden the cake, complete with candles was thrust into my hands, and a rendition of Happy Birthday broke out Thank you everybody
Grub at the Dun Cow was a lovely blur, helped by two pints of lager (SarahWoo, I owe you a pint!), as 11 of us sat round a long table and scoffed and laughed, and looked at our splits and that sort of thing. The main action point that arose out of this meeting was that we should do it all again soon
I'm up for that!

My employers have a website that illustrates all the ways in which they empower women. I'm all for empowering everybody I've been asked (along, i suspect, with all the other websites) to talk to the editor about how Fetch has empowered women.
I can't say that I've done anything deliberately to empower any particular group, but I can think of some things we've done along the way that might have helped.
In no particular order, here are a couple:
1) Using WAVA ratings to allow a sensible approach for those that wish to compare themselves to others.
2) Never attempting to take the "air brushed" route to promoting the site. Always real people, good role models rather than just models.
3) Doing my bit to encourage a rounded view of running that should be something that complements the rest of your life, rather than taking over. PB's are nice, but so is smiling.
I'd be really pleased to hear any other suggestions as to how the site can, and could help women, or indeed any group of relevance to Fetch. Conversely, is there anything sh*t that I do that has left anyone feeling bad because of a group that you consider yourself to be a part of?
Thanks Fetchies

Fetch appears to attract a particularly helpful variety of male.... I've never noticed any denigration or condescension to women on the training threads just because they're women... we seem to be seen as just as capable of training hard as men. That's a good thing. The joke of the day thread, OTOH, has rather too many sexist jokes for my liking.RevBarbaraG7:22pm, 18th Sep 2014

I think the anonymity helps people new to running not to be shy about asking questions. That's not necessarily a female thing I know but it is an empowering thing. Fetch feels like a very inclusive place where it's safe to ask pretty much anything about running (or, dare I say it, Other Sports).sallykate8:08pm, 18th Sep 2014

Thanks, fetch. TBH I have solved the problem by not looking at it very often any more.RevBarbaraG8:38pm, 18th Sep 2014

I've never felt at all marginalised on Fetch because of my gender, or felt the need to say to anyone, "You wouldn't have said that to me if I was a man," or felt as if I was being judged on my appearance.Raptors claws are coming to town
Given the population trend, I would like to think that runners/people who do other sports who are very overweight will find that Fetch is a supportive place where no assumptions about their eating or exercise habits, intelligence, or athletic ability made on the basis of their body size are stated or implied. The same goes for skinny folk too, of course. My impression is that the site polices itself very well in this regard and there is very little fat-shaming, but I'm speaking from the outside on that one.8:39pm, 18th Sep 2014 -
I'd say Fetchland has the same sort of all-welcome spirit you see in Parkrun. Which is kind of opposite to the boys-club attitude of some sites or the mens-clubiness of gyms.McGoohan8:40pm, 18th Sep 2014

A lot of people choose gender neutral names, and although it can become clear from a profile picture or from looking at their details what gender people are, it's not necessarily how you identify people on the site. As mcGoohan says, it has an all-welcome spirit, encompassed in the name of the site. Slow, fast, ultra or just to the lamppost and back, we're all Fetchies. And Fetchies are good people.TheScribbler9:38pm, 18th Sep 2014

There are actually a few fetchies who I thought were men because they talked about 'Mrs X' and then I later realised they were lesbians when I looked at their profiles and realised it said F. That seems pretty inclusive to me, so tell your bosses fetch is lesbian friendly too And even the odd transgender person too I would say it's more important to be inclusive of slower or larger people personally, as a running site the speedy whippet girls are unlikely to experience anything but admiration, but the good thing about fetch is that everyone's achievements are celebratedFeleecy Navidad11:09pm, 18th Sep 2014

I think the nature and presentation of the site has naturally tended to remove the ego-driven testosterone element that other sites have suffered from (Letsrun is the worst - if you aren't a sub 4-miler you seem to be trash on there). By just being inclusive and having a gentle hand on the tiller, it has fulfilled it's empowerment objectives precisely by not empowering any one specific group. No change required then. As you were. The Teaboy8:54am, 19th Sep 2014

I'm fine with not being deliberately empowered thanks. Patronising employers... I think this is a place where generally it doesn't matter who you are or what you are or what your WAVA is, and that along with gentle joshing, it is a place of positivity and helpfulness and silliness. Long may it continue, and would that the real world were the same!JustCommando!11:17am, 19th Sep 2014

Please *don't* go down the "empowering women" route. I'm much happier if we just strive for an equal opportunities type site where EVERYONE is welcome. You seem to be doing a pretty good job so farLittle Nemo11:59am, 19th Sep 2014

There are some good comments above about not focussing on 'empowering women'. I think the site does tick by in a well balanced, gender neutral way without having to call into focus silly initiatives like that. I feel empowered by the vary nature of the fact that no 'minority' group stands out (other than ultra runners but then they are a breed unto themselves )*Anj*12:06pm, 19th Sep 2014

Don't underestimate the power of the preggy and pregnumpcy threads. So many people do not support preggy ladies running and here it is just something that those of us that feel well enough to do, can do it with no judgement. This week, I've done:
Monday - hill-ish efforts with the Harriers, complete with a huge bite on my ankle.
Tuesday - nowt
Wednesday - nowt
Thursday - nowt
Friday - 6 miles with an upper limit on my HR, so that I had to run at a chilled out pace.
Saturday - parkrun, done at 10k pace + 10s/mile - a tempo run. I've been inspired by the 'Be Your Own Boss' article to try to get my tempo pacing right, rather than to go OTT.
Sunday - 4.5 miles with the dog. A bit stop-starty, but no rules (other than not biting people) - just having fun.
It's been nice trying to make sure that each session has a plan.
We've been talking up the Great South Run - but as I haven't actually got the code for our places yet, we're now wondering about some alternatives, given that we'll be doing plenty of drives to Portsmouth over the next few months, so one less would be welcome.

If you like reading blogs, then you might have noticed a bit of a shuffle around on the blog list page. I hope it's not been too traumatic
For those who don't know, there are two different ways to view the blogs list - you can go for the dazzling avatar-heavy version (which has now been christened the 'school cloakroom' style - thanks Sharkie), or if you're trying to stay unobtrusive at work, or if you just like a straightforward list, there's a plain view. Look for the link at the top right of the blog list.
The 'Featured Blogs' are now over on the left. Whilst they are evidently that little bit more popular than the rest, I felt that it would be nice to ensure the rest of the blogs got some sunshine too.
Also for the first time, your favourite blogs are now on a tab on the main blog list page. Previously you had to go to a different page - but now you can just click the tab over on the left, and they should load instantly.
But the feature that I particularly like is the little 'Tick' that pops up after you've read a blog. It's a good way of remembering where you'd got to. And I've found myself reading blogs that I might not normally look at, just to collect the full set
I'm off for a run now. Tatty bye.

I'd like to publish an article that illustrates the work that goes into organising a race. The idea being that it will perhaps be useful for anyone contemplating organising a race, and it might also help to illustrate the effort involved, and therefore perhaps diffuse a small percentage of people who complain about race organisation.
Firstly then, does that sound like a good idea?
And secondly, I'm hoping to either find someone who will volunteer to write it, or who can share their experience so that I can turn that information into an article.
Anyone willing to stick their head over the parapet?

Excellent idea - make sure you get up-to-date info, especially wrt road races. The requirements for our road league this year have jumped considerably - people having to go on courses on how to close roads for the ten minutes required for the start, and having to purchase road closed signs and stop/go lollypops for example. Our league is now sponsored by our local newspaper - who sponsor by providing the advertising space required to give notice of the (very short term) road closures.ThorntonRunner12:07pm, 9th Sep 2014

A quick blog, to get me back to daily blogging.
The boy goes back to school tomorrow - boo. But the summer holidays seem like a bit of a blur now. The next few months may be a bit blurry too - see Katie's blog for more about that :-/
I've filled in the forms for a track card at Bedford Stadium today - it's one of the perks from work that they'll cover gym membership - and I've persuaded them that a track counts as a gym. Which it surely does.
There's also an article about Pesterers and Lazybones:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/cms-60
We could do with a few more Pesterers to even things up a bit. Come on, don't be shy
The first batch of Fetch shirts went to the post office today, with more to follow. Lots more!
And I did my first official session with the Harriets this evening. Hill work. Five loops of the same circuit, going at it on the up, the across, and the down - and recovering at the bottom. It was hard work, but also quite fun in an extremely sadistic way. It was nice to bounce off the other runners (in a non-literal sense) to keep the pace up in the last few iterations - and I even did race arms on the last one to keep the pace up. Here's the session - the hills don't look like much on here:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=10445266
Egg, chips and beans, a glass of wine, and a couple of episodes of The Killing to round off the evening

Good work - hills are good, intervals are good, doing it with a club is sooo much better than trying to do it by oneself. You will come on leaps and bounds (if you want to) if you can keep 1 x club session per week, plus your other runs stead. Sorry to hear Katie's news. Hope you will all be as OK through it all as you can. Thoughts are with you all. GMerry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)11:45am, 9th Sep 2014
