Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

Salad days are over

9:47am, 18 Feb 2025
It's half term this week, which means that the venue for nets is closed. And the week after that is reserved for the ladies - so I've no cricket now until March 6th.

It's been going pretty well :-) I know the names of at least 17 players now, and have been making a point of learning as many as I can. There are 80+ players in the WhatsApp group, so there's more to learn - but everyone so far has been very friendly. It's the club's 150th anniversary this year, so they have a ball in a marquee planned - and Katie and I have put ourselves on the list for tickets. And as part of a week-long celebration, they have a game against the MCC.

The only disturbing thing I've discovered is that cricket teas are no longer a thing. They were abandoned during Covid, and then I think everyone realised that it was way less hassle if everyone brought their own stuff. And it probably is, but it's a tradition I will miss. When I was about 12, I used to travel with Blackwood's 2nd XI to do the scorebook for them. I'd get a free tea out of it, and the players would buy me a squash every now and then. As a very unadventurous eater, home teas were always a haven of consistency - I just needed to remove the slices of cucumber from the tuna sandwiches, and I was in my happy place. Away teas, less so. One club always put on salad, so I seem to remember just not having anything to eat that day.

It sounds like they'll make an exception for the MCC though - hard to imagine us sending them round the corner to the BP garage :-)

As for the actual cricket, I am finding my level. The first net was relatively quiet (about 15 players), but the three since then have been much busier, with 25+ in attendance. Rather than giving batters a very short window to bat, they pair us up - and they've divided things into a fast net and a spin net. So you get six balls in the fast net, then swap with your buddy. Then six balls in the spin net, then swap with your buddy.

Some of the quick bowlers are pretty rapid for my rusty batting. There's one young lad there who plays for the county, and he went through me like a lorry load of butter through a disposable knife. But despite getting my stumps rattled a few times, I feel like I've played *some* nice shots. And I'm learning which bowlers are 1st or 2nd team players - and cautiously optimistic that I should be ok in the 2nds.

The spin net is a bit of a misnomer - there are some seam bowlers in there too, but typically quite a bit slower than the fast net. There's one guy who jogs up and then throws it - I am guessing either he has an injury, or just does not like bowling. One of the spinners is looking at the ceiling when he lets go of the ball, but he gets a tonne of spin and bounce. I have come through a little patch of trying to hit the spinners too hard, and am now trying to focus more on timing, getting both my feet moving, and developing a range of shots.

I also got to try out one of the bats I picked up off eBay in the autumn. It's a Duncan Fearnley Magnum, and is probably older than half the players. But it has a nice grain on it, and last week I took the plunge and went into the net with it. I totally love the weight of it (as a pre-growth-spurt kid I always assumed they were very heavy bats, but it's anything but), and a couple that I really connected with disappeared with a satisfying *ping*. This is a term that batters use to talk about good bats. 'That pinged' they say. And being a recognisably older bat, it brought about some properly nerdy chats.

Edit: here's my kit, complete with helmet :-)

In bowling terms, I am going through little patches here and there where I bowl some nice balls. I still occasionally hit the ceiling of the net (twice in the first week, once in the second, none in the third, then two in a row immediately after batting in the fourth). I think my line is improving, but I'm bowling far too many drag downs (this is where you let go of the ball a fraction too late, so it bounces well before the batter). I'm enjoying it very much though, and feel as though I've got a bit more energy in my run up. My right shoulder has been a bit problematic, but I've got some resistance bands attached to the post at the bottom of our stairs, and every time I go past, I do a couple of dozen shoulder exercises.

Injury-wise, I am all good, unlike poor @Nicholls595 who has broken his thumb :-( The only damage so far is when I stuck my hand out to stop a ball that had been hit back towards the bowling queue. I had bruising on my middle finger for the rest of the week, but no long term damage I hope.

So no cricket for nearly three weeks, then I'll miss a couple more of the sessions in March, because we are away for a week. But the season is coming, and I am still super-excited about it. The fixture list is now out, and if I can get some games for the Sunday 2nd XI, here's the list of 'em: olneytown.play-cricket.com - starting quite aptly on Star Wars day :-)

Bring it on :-)

It is such I thing I can remember soecific groups from 8 or 9 years back. I reckon everything will tighten up and become more consistent. Sounds like your club is much bigger and better organised than mine. Winter nets have had between 4 and 7 (plus myself). I've asked about Whatsapp groups, and apparently they only run during the season. Better news on teas though, I believe it is still a thing at Eastwood CC. Bloody good job, I wouldn't have come back without teas.
Thumb is healing nicely. Missed 2 weeks, may go and bowl a few next week, then we're away. So targeting March 10th to properly get back. Still 10 weekends before the first League match.

Streetview on route plotting

5:06pm, 17 Feb 2025
Here's something I figured might be useful.

When you're plotting a route, and trying to memorise the directions for when you go and run it later, it's handy to be able to have a look at the landmarks you pass. [Side note: you can always export the route to your watch for guidance when you run, but knowing there's a post box on the road you need to turn down can be handy intel.]

I've added a little popup window (on desktop / large screens only) that shows you the current Streetview position for any route that you're plotting.

AND it will try to orient itself so that it's facing the way you're travelling.

There's a button to close it down if it's annoying you.

What do you reckon?

Rundle Guesses

3:07pm, 13 Feb 2025
I've just seen @um unload a whole load of successful guesses in Rundle ( fetcheveryone.com/rundle.php ). Since I developed the game in Feb 2022, there have been 645 correct guesses, and 16900 wrong guesses :-)

The game involves guessing a random number between 1 and 1 million (inclusive). In that time, the lowest number has been 170, and the highest has been 996442. In the first ever game, it took y'all 103 guesses to arrive at the right number, and that remains the record for the least efficient attempt. Probably slightly hampered by the fact that all failed guesses count towards the total - so when the game was new and everyone was joining in, all those failed attempts were counting.

The record is 14 guesses by @AndyS and five players have managed it in 15 guesses - Evan Velociraptor Tom Tom Exmoor Runner and Jock Itch

In theory, using something called binary search, and assuming you have enough digits at your disposal, you should be able to complete in 20 guesses every time. The idea is that your first guess will be 500,000; and your second guess will be 250,000 *OR* 750,000 - depending on whether the game told you your first guess was too high or too low. Basically, you keep dividing the available numbers by 2. And 1000000/(2^20) < 1, so 20 guesses should do it.

This bit of maths plays out in the stats. This graph shows the distribution of guesses, and around 20 guesses is the most popular outcome.

In theory, you can introduce an element of luck into your search to try and beat the magic 20. Instead of 500,000 as your first guess, you go with 333,333. If you get lucky at this point, the goal number is lower, and you've reduced the options to a third, rather than a half. Of course, if you get unlucky, you're still left with two thirds. If your nerve and your luck hold using this approach, you can hope for a win in 13 guesses, because 1000000/(3^13) < 1. But it's like predicting a coin toss 13 times in a row. Captaincy material :-)

You could be braver still, and instead of 500,000, go with 250,000. Now you're dividing by 4 each time, and you only need to guess right 10 times. But this time, someone's weighted the coin, and not in your favour.

And besides all that, it's a nice way to decide your route each day, to stockpile digits. Have a go at it here: fetcheveryone.com/rundle.php

I do try to nibble the edges. eg on that first guess, 500,000 is half way, but 2 **19 is 524,288, so you can choose anywhere between 475,712 and 524,888 to reduce the gap without losing anything, and vary the numbers. With a similar stragegy all the way down.

In case you missed it

10:13am, 7 Feb 2025
Yesterday, I tried deploying a new ad system, which you won't have seen if you donate to the site.

The reason for the change was to see if there was a better way than the Google Ads that I've used on the site for a decade or so. When the site came back to me at the end of 2016, the Google Ads were a key part of believing that it was possible. I've just looked back at 2017, and in that first month of independence, the ads made £1294 in a month. In January 2025, the ads made £60.85.

It's the way things are going. With every day that passes, there is ever more internet, and therefore the value of displaying an ad must fall.

Occasionally I get an email from a company that curates ads. This time it was Snack Media. They "monetise sports and entertainment content on behalf of the world's most premium and progressive publishers & rights holders". That's me, obvs :-)

I put it live yesterday. And it clearly needs a bit of fine tuning :-) I had messages from a few very unhappy people over the course of the day. I came back for a look at the site on my mobile after cricket nets last night*, and could see the problem(s). Firstly, the ad at the top of the page took up about 50% of the height of the mobile screen. And the 'sticky' ad at the bottom took up about 30%. So with the normal Fetch menu taking up about 10%, that meant there was a sliver about 10% of the height of the screen for the actual content. On the forum, you could see maybe two or three thread titles! On top of that, the ads were all fairly violently animated, and the page was jumping around like a F*r*ge† in a frying pan.

I switched it off again, and have contacted my new associates with feedback. I've told them I understand that ads compete for attention, but that there is a balance to be struck, and this isn't it. So they might come back - but they might not.

What this definitely ISN'T, is me asking anyone who already subscribes to donate more. Please don't. Nor is it me pressurising anyone who doesn't donate to do so. Do it if you're comfortable with it, and for no other reason. But I am trying to highlight the fact that there's a balancing act, that I do listen to feedback, and that I try to get it right for you.

*I have a slightly purple bit on my finger where I tried to stop a ball that flew back over the bowlers. But nothing too bad, certainly not @Nicholls595 standard. And overall, it's going well.

†A frog might be a simpler metaphor, but I like frogs.

This year's virtual challenges

5:33pm, 5 Feb 2025
Just a quick one before my tea...

As usual, we'll do our virtual challenge this year, running from the day the clocks go forward, until the day they go back.

We are lucky enough to already have a running/walking route sorted. But would anyone fancy working out a route for our swimmers and cyclists?

The ideal route will offer some decent StreetView imagery, with some checkpoints along the way. These don't *have* to be particularly noteworthy - just towns or cities or water features to aim at. The swim last year was 48 miles, and the bike ride was 1480ish.

Leave a comment if you're interested :-)

Comments

  • I was going to suggest London - Edinburgh - London as the audax is running this year (Aug) but it’s not long enough. How about the Wild Atlantic Way, it’s 2100km, 2020 was 1368 miles

    6:54pm, 5th Feb 2025
  • I was just off checking the Wild Atlantic Way and came back to see MsG had beaten me to it. The website splits it into 14 stages so that could be handy for checkpoints.
    HowFar?
    7:03pm, 5th Feb 2025
  • The Wild Atlantic Way ends (or starts, I suppose) in Kinsale, Co. Cork. The river Bandon enters the sea at Kinsale and is about 45 miles long, I think, if you wanted the swimming and bike route to end in the same place.
    HowFar?
    7:30pm, 5th Feb 2025
  • Alternatively, Turin to Madrid - the same start/end as Vuelta a España (which also finishes in September) visiting some of the stages along the way and perhaps (some Tour de France locations along the way)

Training Targets - Now With Time Option

3:47pm, 4 Feb 2025
Last week I updated the Training Targets page to make it a bit simpler. Now I've made it more complicated :-)

You can, if you wish, also add a time goal for the year, to track the total volume of training you do. This covers your accumulated efforts across all training in your log. Click the 'Hours' tab to set one up:

fetcheveryone.com/training-targets.php

And a few of you sounded a bit sad that the graph with all the overlaid lines had gone, so I've added an 'All' option, which shows all the distance targets you've chosen.

And that's it really. Have a spiffing afternoon.
