Fix It Friday!

12:18pm, 25 Jan 2019
It's Friday, I've fixed stuff (some of which I broke in the first place). It must be Fix It Friday! It's been a good week for getting stuck in - I have a nice list to share with you.

1) First up is a new calculator, in response to a request (I can't remember who asked, so sorry - it's been busy). Rather than putting your race time in, and getting a WAVA/age grade out, you put the WAVA in, and it tells you what times you need to run. It saves fiddling about :-) Try it here:

fetcheveryone.com/training-calculators-reversewava.php

2) Following on from that, I decided to tidy up Training > Calculators. I've grouped them into categories. Not much more to say about this, other than to ask you to leave a comment if there's a calculator you'd like to see added: fetcheveryone.com/training-calculators.php

3) Tackling a few Fitbit woes. Several of you have new Fitbits for Christmas, and have been pleased to discover that you can now import your Fitbit training entries to the site. BUT we've discovered some issues. Elsie Too's swims generate TCX files, but those TCX files have virtually nowt in them, so they're as good as useless. And when RunnyBunny imports a TCX manually, her heart rate data is there, but when she uses our importer, it's not there. I investigated this, because I thought maybe there was something wrong with our importer - but the data is simply NOT THERE. I've contacted Fitbit about both these issues, and am awaiting a response.

3b) In a similar vein, I'm also trying to get some reassurances from Suunto about our importing options, in light of some recent announcements they've made about a new platform, and the retirement of an old one. Fingers crossed for a response soon.

4) Our race database is huge and awesome. That's nothing new. Every month, the 'Visit Event Website' links on our race listings are followed over 10,000 times. But there are also a few companies that list LOTS of races with us. And I discovered that one of them (let's call them TrickyCorp) was selling a service to race organisers. Part of what they do is deliver traffic to the event website. TrickyCorp list the races with us, but when you click 'Visit Event Website', it first goes to the TrickyCorp website, and from there on to the event website. TrickyCorp get to say that they've generated XYZ views, and presumably use it to justify their fees. So.... (sorry Sharkie) I put together a little snippet of code that follows the link, grabs the end destination, and uses that instead. I think event organisers need to know that their traffic comes from us. And we don't charge for listings.

5) A few users (including McG) reported that 'Next Race' on the Race Portfolio page was only picking up straightforward 'distance run' races. So triathlons, duathlons, timed races, swims, bikes etc were not getting a chance. That should be fixed now. Your Race Portfolio: fetcheveryone.com/raceportfolio.php

6) Member of the Month. A few months back I put the voting, nominating and questioning reminders into notifications. Various people have reported that they've accidentally closed the notification, and couldn't then find a suitable link. So now, collected MOTM wisdom (including the last 12 interviews) can now be found at fetcheveryone.com/motm - it shows a link to voting from 1st to 7th, and link to question page from 8th to 14th. The nominations are open all month. Have you nominated someone yet?

7) Race Portfolio (again). Dvorak asked if WAVA data could be made available on smartphones when you put your phone on its side (landscape view). There are an increasing number of places on the site where flipping to landscape view gives you a wee bit more detail. I first saw this on the BBC Sport website. When they publish league tables, the mobile ones always look super simple, but if you flip your phone, it gives you extra stuff, like goal difference. Great use of smartphone tech :-)

8) I've added a box where you can enter your height on the weight page - and it'll automatically calculate your BMI based on your most recent weight data. I've also thought about whether to give you the option to turn on a notification, that would then pop up every day/week/month to remind you to record your weight. Thoughts? Anyway, here's the weight page: fetcheveryone.com/weight.php

That seems like a good place to end it this week :-) I hope you have a good one. Don't forget to tune into the podcast - find out how here: fetcheveryone.com/podcast

I'm back to playing fetchpoint (yay) but when you click on a bug/flower/etc the information box comes up with the top left corner located at the centre of the item. This means that you can't see what terrain lies beneath the 'quarter past to half past' quadrant of the 80m circle. Please can the boxes be offset a little?
Also, it'd be great to have the option of a satellite view again on fetchpoint; I can only navigate my routes by seeing field edges, which don't show on the map (and footpaths on the map are 'patchy' at best..!)

Fix It Friday

1:57pm, 18 Jan 2019
...is back (just about)!

December is one of those months where I tell myself in advance that I'll be able to get lots done, because you'll all be busy enjoying the calendar. This year I had every intention of writing a book about Fetch. Current word count = 0.

Not only that, but a bit of a break over Christmas means that I come back to tottering piles of stuff :-) So the first half of January has been largely about having a bit of a square up behind the scenes. Of course, I did put together the Trader game, and have recorded a podcast, so it's not all been sweeping up :-)

Here are a few little nuggets that you might have missed, to tide you over 'til next week:

1) Who Squares Wins - now has a "Take A Break" button, for anyone wanting to sit out a week's worth of matches. It's fun to play, but everyone needs a break every once in a while.

2) When adding a race listing, there's a new surface that just says "tarmac". 'Cos I was asked, ok? :-)

3) I've updated the parkrun review page, so that you can see the other reviews now: fetcheveryone.com/parkrun.php - and you can also put a placename or postcode to look in different places.

4) When you upload an image to a route, or user profile, you can zoom/crop/rotate. A minor adjustment to the speed of the zooming will hopefully make it a little bit easier to adjust.

5) It was impossible to add a club with an apostrophe.

6) There's a lovely golden background on user profiles where the user is supporting the site. Oooh! Here's yours - is it shiny? ;-) fetcheveryone.com/userprofile.php

Having dealt with the biggest of the tottering piles, I hope that next week's FIF will be a bit more interesting :-)

Feel free to leave your comments. If you have any site issues, click the 'Help' button at the top of every page, and send me a feedback. It's really helpful for me to be able to keep all the requests in one place. AND if you want to make MULTIPLE requests, please do so in SEPARATE feedbacks. I don't like replying to half a message, so I often won't until I'm able to tackle the whole thing - which means you're left hanging. Much easier to pick off the easy stuff in separate chunks.

Have a great weekend :-) Don't forget to tune in to the podcast: fetcheveryone.com/podcast :-)

Fetch Chaos

9:15pm, 15 Jan 2019
We did some Fetch meetups last Saturday. It was lovely to see a bunch of Fetchies all together :-) But bringing people together always results in more stuff happening. Here are two things that I know of:

1) Katie and Helegant ended up going swimming in the river :-)

2) Badger gave me a great idea for a bit of stats/analysis nerdery. There's a stat (covered in an old Fetch article) that shows that there's a cut-off point, somewhere between 3hr30 and 4hrs. Below it, 3hr marathoners train at an average pace that's slower than their race pace, but above it, 5hr marathoners train quicker than they end up achieving on race day. And the question is... how much of that is down to 'blowing up on race day'. Looking at my own data, my average pace in the three months pre-Abingdon was 9:40. I ran at 9:40 for about the first 20 miles. I ended up with a 10:07 pace marathon. So I trained faster than I got. Expect me to go quiet for a day or two whilst I get the numbers together on that, on a grand scale :-)

What bits of chaos have meetings with Fetchies led you to?

  • Those stats make sense. I think you will also find faster but less experienced marathoners train faster but maybe not quite at marathon pace. Running slower than race pace imo is key to a good outcome. There are targetted faster miles in there though.

    9:59pm, 15th Jan 2019
  • On the whole, the longer the run, the slower I run it. I’ve done two marathons but I haven’t ‘raced’ them as such. It’s not a matter of blowing up, just running at a sensible pace I can sustain.

Berlin Half Marathon Festive Fetch Calendar Winner
Our first-pick winner from the Festive Fetch Calendar has unfortunately had to pull out. But that does mean that if we're extremely quick, we can draw a new winner. Just to clarify what's on offer, Sports Tours International are offering you race entry plus three nights' accommodation for the Generali Berlin Half Marathon on 7 April 2019 for two people (flights not included).

Because we're two weeks on, it's entirely possible that folks who entered will no longer be able to do it. So what I'll do is to pick five names at random, and the first one on the list will have first refusal, and so on, until we hopefully find someone. The names in order are:

NEW WINNER: chewitt
FIRST RESERVE: LazyDaisy
SECOND RESERVE: Sunbed Athlete
THIRD RESERVE: Bazoaxe
FOURTH RESERVE: Hobbitbean

I will get in touch with chewitt, and we'll take it from there.

My week of running

2:19pm, 12 Jan 2019
Monday
Nowt.

Tuesday
A nice tour of the sewerage works, abattoir and football ground (aka the unholy trinity) with Katie. Gentle pace for me.

Wednesday
Nowt.

Thursday
I haven't done any speedwork in ages, so in order to jump start / trick myself, I ran a couple of miles, then did a "seedling tempo" run of ten minutes, just to remind myself of what it was like. Pace was 7:46/mile. I intended to jog a mile or so after that, but I've got my "going to the toilet" all wrong this week (read on, dear reader), and so I mainly just walked carefully home. But I was still pleased to get an idea of what speedwork felt like.

Friday
Building up my long run. I headed up the Erewash Canal, which is something I've done dozens of times before - but this time I was keen to check out a little side path. I'd always assumed that it led to a little wooded area populated by young offenders on dirt bikes (having seen a couple go that way before). But having consulted the map, I discovered it led on to something called 'The Nutbrook Trail'. Despite the first half mile being through a recycling plant (a rather smelly one), it soon turned into a nice leafy path. There was a little bridge going over the top of the path with its middle entirely missing - which always intrigues me. The trail itself follows the former Nutbrook canal from the Erewash Canal up to Shipley. On the way back, my toilet scheduling brought me to a couple of awkward standstills (I'll leave you to imagine the detail), and so whilst the running itself was not uncomfortable, I was very pleased to get home. #clenchy

Here's the run, in case you want a look: fetcheveryone.com/t-15813479 - I'll see if I can get a bit further along the trail next time. Nutbrook City Limits?

Saturday
a first chance of the year to get a benchmark for my 5k time, and to meet up with some Fetchies. I fancy seeing whether a focus on 5k and 10k this year might help me get close to my best times. The 5k best of 21:31 is now 10 years old, although I've been close, with 21:37 a few years back.

Luckily I was in a better place, toilet-wise :-) But when I started running, I realised that I'd put my stomach muscles through the mill the previous day - and they're still a little sore now. On the plus side, at least it means I have stomach muscles - it was in some doubt over Christmas.

It was my first run at Great Denham parkrun, but I was familiar with the paths. The start was a little bit slower than I was hoping for due to starting too far back (because I didn't really know where the start line was), but I think that helped ensure I didn't go off like a loon. I'm super-pleased with the pacing (7:36, 7:29, 7:29) and would like to retain that consistency as I (hopefully) improve.

Here's the run: fetcheveryone.com/t-15817729

Afterwards, we herded ourselves together for some photos:

then decamped to Wine Legs and Binks' house for some coffee and cake, and a game of Super Mario Bros with Elsie Too junior :-)

Tomorrow
We're aiming to do a long dog walk, which starts and ends at a dog-friendly pub :-)

Reading the blogs, it's been a sad week - the tragic loss of KinkyS's dad, and Derpy Tup's cancer news. There's no way round it - sometimes things just totally suck. It all serves as a reminder to all of us never take anything for granted, and to be grateful for what we have. Keep fighting, Fetchies.

Naming and faming - this week :-)

12:57pm, 7 Jan 2019
A big shout out to all the following Fetchies who have taken out new voluntary subscriptions this week, or else renewed their annual contribution:

rucksack
dillthedog
Billy Whiz
The Tinselator
D2
Adamantt
fuzzyduck79
DTs
lin50
choccy
DrDan
BS
tinebeest
wendyjames
Heinzster
LeighM

All these Fetchies get a shiny gold background on their user profiles, and the warm and fuzzy knowledge that they are supporting the site. Their help means that we can pay for servers, software, and all the necessary Marmite on toast I need to give me the power to look after you all. Unlike other websites, nothing is locked behind a paywall - so by donating, you're also helping other runners to find their way to us.

If you've been planning on taking out a voluntary subscription, now would be great. Here's the info you need:

  • Would it be interesting / appropriate (?) to see a counter (maybe not a full list) of Fetch subscribers - annual / one-off vs. monthly etc? Really just to get a flavour for the "health" of the subscribed community? Obviously without monetary values or anything. Just a thunk. When it's growing it would feel positive and when it's not, it might be a good hurry up for getting a few more folk to join in? :-) GG

Naming and faming :-)

4:20pm, 2 Jan 2019
We picked up some new Fetch monthly subscribers today, plus an annual donation, and a renewal of an annual donation. So I'd just like to say thank you to:

millicent
cu-jimmy
Jovi Runner
awd70
Mave
JuanHubseeth
Tomski

You all join the list of wonderful Fetchies who support what we do. And I've adjusted user profiles of all our donators to highlight their awesomeness.

Without that support, we would not be here. Thank you everyone!

If you're able to spare the price of a pint each month to keep our wheels turning, here's a bit of info on how to do that: fetcheveryone.com/invite.php
