SusieG 8pm Saturday night, glass of ginger wine in hand, I text Steve to ask if he still had a spare race number for tomorrow. The answer was yes (3 of them!) so I crawled out of bed on a foggy Sunday morning to run the Abbey Dash. Arrived at Park Square, club photo, few laps of the square to warm up (decided conditions were actually pretty run-friendly despite visability (you really don't want to see the miles of Kirkstall Road stretching into the distance anyway!). Headed to the starting pens (what a joke- no one appears to stand in their designated starting time pen!) with several club mates (Chris E, Nick, Alex, Tom, Rob).

Start gun went at 9.30 and we were off at pace. I had decided I would go fast from the start as a change for my normal steady start and warm up into the race... This wasn't a race strategy, mearly a last-minute-standing-in-pens- with-fast-guys-from-club affair! So first 2km was fast, goldfish impression running! Rob was on my shoulder and commented at km1 that we were on for a 39min finish at that pace and that he wasn't sure he could maintain it! I agreed but wanted to continue with the pace for as long as I could maintain it! As it turned out, that was about 5-6km. After that I began pretty knackered and not too great. My pace slowed and lots of people overtook me (including Rob who I could continue to see about 20m ahead). I was very grateful to see the finish line after a pretty unpleasant last 4km (and even more relieved not to vomit on the finish timing mats). it is a fast but unrelenting course and I was longing for hills for a change of pace and some recovery of sorts! All I could think was 'give me 3x the distance and some big hills over this torture any day!'

My time was 44:14 which is a pb but I am dissapointed with it. I thought I'd got significantly faster than last year from an increase in millage/effort, but I think I would need to do some more speed sessions to improve significantly. I did feel slightly better at realising I was 144th women out of over 2500, but I wanted a 43:?? time really.

So the Abbey Dash is still as painful and 'orrible as I remember. I am pleased I tried a new strategy even if it didn't pay off and I crashed in the 2nd half. At least I know what to concentrate on for next race. It also made me realise that racing is good- I don't generally enjoy racing (until afterwards anyway!) but it is good experience and the only way to improve racing performance really is to race. I also realised that I really don't enjoy short, flat road racing (too painful!) and rather the challenges, adventure and unknown of off-road and fell. Unfortunate then that the next scheduled race is the v flat Brass Monkey! At least its longer!

Rigel Brrrr! Cold and foggy run but, despite a few niggles in my left shin and a dull ache in the front of my right ankle, managed to maintain a pretty steady pace and get a PB. :)
