Cheeseman75 I really underestimated this race, very undulating and challenging course. Might hit it again next year, but by god will train better next time.

digiscape Ouch - slight head cold from Friday must have had an effect as I was really struggling by 7 miles at a slower pace than training. Mixture of running/walking from then on so really it's good that I still managed a PB but disappointing to have been so far off target pace after strong training. Just have to try again in future and try avoid all germs in the tapering phase!

edso90 All went pear shaped at 20 and I knew it was coming from around 11. A personal worst so not what I was after in terms of time but need to be fitter if I'm to break 3.30. Maybe Berlin in 3 years....

elio I went out too fast keeping marathon goal pace from beginning. I arrived at half point in 01:42:25 which was nearly two minutes faster than 6 months ago in Brighton. From then on I completely fell apart, due too couple of challenging hills and persistent wind. I developed also an annoying pain in my lower back and shoulders. I run much slower and stopped frequently and run the second half in 02:12. Support was great especially on the Liverpool side of the Mersey, but this course wasn't advertised as hilly...and Sefton park seemed to go on forever..Not to mention the big cock -up of the organisers starting the race 45 minutes later( that never happened to me before..).
Big lesson to be learned for next marathon is to really have a good analysis of the course and pace myself better. Also more hill training..

Steady Fast Desperately want to beat 3.30, would like to be closer to 3.15 if possible but we'll see how the day pans out.

Update - Happy with the time overall. Course much tougher than I'd expected, especially the torturous Sefton Park loops. Lost my head at 25 miles and had to work hard just to finish in the end.

Steve72 Had a nightmare due to bad cramp at mile 21 again! Very frustrating, I really thought I wouldn't suffer with it again this time. Start of the race was delayed by 50 mins which was a right pain. Finally started and some good support along the way, tunnel was tough and the next couple of miles very hard work. Got to mile 20 in 45th position, a little bit slower than I'd planned but the hardest part of the course was out of the way so I was still hopeful of sub-3hr. I thought it would be hard work but was convinced I could up the pace in the last 4 just enough, or if not I'd get quite close anyway and still get a pb. Overtook a few more people but suddenly started to get twinges of cramp in left leg so eased off a little and had a quick stretch. But it got worse and worse. I still felt strong and wasn't struggling but every step felt like I would cramp up badly so had to keep stopping and slowing. Just about managed to compose myself to run the last half mile but it was painful. Great support and got goosebumps as I came out of the tunnel and went round and down James Street.
