Just wanted to add something here about screening - if your medical record has changed your sex to reflect your gender identity, including on the screening database then you won't be called automatically for screening. The GP practice has to take the responsibility for that. We've processed cervical screening for F-M transgender people, whose record has been amended and their result has to be sent out by the practice. The central screening database won't accept a cervical screening result on someone recorded as male.

How would WAVA grading be affected if a trans athlete in, say, the FV50 category ran a world age group record. That would make the record unattainable by female born woman. I assume it would also have a roll down effect on WAVA so whereas I was previously graded at 80% I'd drop to 60% or less? Seems grossly unfair to female born women.

I want to thank Thornton Runner and Vixx for their open and honest accounts and insight into what it can be like for for someone who in this situation.
I do know a male to female athlete in the non elite class, she works really hard for her chosen sport and often wins, she is not open about her background probably because she feels she will be judged and treated differently to other competitors and in her day to day life, this makes me incredibly sad for her, this person who is a friend of a friend has never mentioned her background even to her friends.

Jovi, please consider using the term ‘awarded’ rather than ‘stealing’

No particular reason WAVA should be affected at all; it doesn’t just all automatically update every time a world record is run, there’s moderation and calculation, with updates only appearing every couple of years, and if somebody really knocked 25% off a world record, you can be confident they’d take a close look at that. I realise the number is hyperbole and it’s the world record going or not going that would be the more difficult issue. Testosterone level testing should come into play there.
Vixx, thank you for your posts here. I know three trans women; one was a serious mid pack hobby runner before transitioning after she retired from work, and I don’t think she has run a race since, because there were so many issues, including the speed question. That, though, was a long way from being the biggest worry she had (I know she’d be fine with what I’ve said so far but I won’t go further without her agreement, the rest of what I know is quite personal).
That is clearly a loss for her. I don’t believe that banning trans women from all competition is desirable.
I do think that, at the professional/age group world record level, testosterone monitoring should manage the problem. That’s not the answer for parkrun. Adding more gender categories could be.

Thank you to TR and Vixx for sharing their first-hand experiences. Like everyone, I don’t know what the answers are. But the point I’d like to reinforce is that of respect. TR should not have to make it a plea. It should be a default here. Thank you all for upholding that.

Yes thank you TR and Vixx. Fetch do you have to declare a gender on here?
I did not know that men used to dress as women presumably just in order to win medals. Ye gods. For parkrun at least though there should be a way of competing without having to declare a gender I’d happily run neutral but then I’m never going to win anything
