Jen, I would start my watch when they say go so the time you are pacing is the time that will appear on the results. It might mean you will have to run quicker pace than the time suggests but I think a lot of people will just take their results time as their 5K time (whether they ran further or not)

When I pace I like to tell those around me whether we are ahead or behind target and by how much (eg “10 seconds ahead!”). I do it each km and at half way.

I've been the pace maker at some big events

Start your watch as soon as parkrun starts

Please don't run crazy ahead of target or you will blow people up.

Basically stopping to walk to the line in km 5 is NOT pacing

You can lose 10 seconds or so in the first km due to the start but have 4 more to GENTLY make it up.

Anymore than about 5 seconds too fast in a km is too much.

Remember what is comfy for you is not comfy for the people you are pacing.

Town Moor was where I did my first ever sub 20 min parkrun. I was desperately trying to hang on to the 20 minute pacer, but by the end, he was well clear of me. I was delighted to see 19m45s on my watch at the end. He must have been about 19m 35s but I wasn't complaining!

I've paced 20 mins 4 times this year at Cannock - all between 19.50 and 19.56.

I always tell people my job is to get them to 4k. I encourage the stronger people to then find their own limit and push on while I get the close ones home.

I like that Gobi, will try incorporate it next time I pace. Suspect it works better for faster times and wouldn’t be as effective for say 30 mins.

I've paced 36 mins on this logic. MrsG is a 30 min or so parkrunner :-)

Great advice everybody. We have pacers today at Dinton when I’m RD so I shall impart a few words of wisdom and hopefully it will help. By the way I still need a pacer for 21 and 37 if anyone is free!

When I was trying for a pb the first time I got under 25min (by about 5secs) was with a pacer who paced it brilliantly, the second time I was hanging onto the 25min pacer who finished just infront of me and I finished in 24.30!
