Flatlander I hope the marathon went well in spite of the pre race stress NZD don't let one bad sesh put you off. Plenty of time before your 10k Thanks @Torque Steer yes I'm very happy with those split. I do have a shoe cupboard, but always dry my running shoes on the radiator before they go in. Which by the way annoys Mrs OO even more 😉 |

Flatlander
@OO61 3:57:46 in a year when I would have been capable of 3:15, a GFA time, if things had gone well. It wasn't all down to the sherpas' tardiness though. It was not so much a 2 weeks taper but a 6 weeks "crash" due to exhausting hours at work. I went from having done ~50 miles a week (an effort but I had coped well) culminating in a 27 miles cross-country run 7 weeks before the race, to running only 15-20 miles a week with no long runs. The sherpas' main contribution was that my R hamstring started to feel tight after about 5 miles, almost certainly due to standing around in the frost for so long, getting cold and having no warm up. The hamstring gradually got worse, and I got slower and slower. The moral is to make sure your sherpas are extremely reliable! |

Velociraptor
Thanks @Torque Steer I wasn't doing quite the same marathon, I was only doing the fun run. My sherpas only just had time to eat their three course breakfast between doing the heading-out-of-town photo and the last 200m photo. In the two marathons I've done this year (Seville and Belfast) eL Bee! worked out ways of seeing me at multiple points on the route.

I can sympathise there, @Flatlander. Not regarding unreliable sherpas, but I think one of the reasons my run at London last year was a lot worse than my worst expectations was all the standing around getting cold and damp beforehand. By the time I got to Fetchpoint and discovered that eL Bee! had (quite reasonably) thought I'd been joking about wanting a sausage roll I already had half a dozen 14-15 minute miles behind me.

@Torque Steer , I managed to watch a good deal of today's cricket which was arguably England's best day ever in Test cricket away from home. And good to hear that you laced up your shoes. 9, 6, 5 minutes with short walk breaks. Wordle in four. |

Defo lessons to learn Flatlander. At least the lack of training is something you can put right. A sausage roll mid race @Velociraptor , that's....odd. Nice work Alehouse, and hope you enjoyed the cricket. Sorry to hear about the achilles WP. Enjoy today's run. Beach run with my daughter this morning. Home parkrun tomorrow. |

Good to hear of steady improvement @Canute. Finished my last week of super-abbreviated training for my first 10k in 9 years. A 7k on monday. I decided against a longer run - I liked to include over-distance training, but agreed, it would make no difference in this case and only hinder recovery on a taper. 5k on wednesday and a "quick" 3k this morning. I'm re-learning how to vary pace, which is encouraging. Times all heading in the right direction. Temperature has cooled off considerably this week, now only at 23 celsius instead of low 30s! Maybe even some rain on Sunday. I'd love that. |
