I too would like some of the earlier posters to feel comfortable on here. And I would like to say that I value the opinions of both women and men on all subjects including women's sport.
And if society in general was more accepting of transgender people perhaps it would be possible to have a separate category in sport but I think this thread has shown why people may not wish to divulge themselves as transgender. That makes me very sad indeed
Im going to stop posting. I do apologise if ive come across as confrontational. I do hope I haven't offended Vixx as i value him as a friend & knowing him in real life I hope he realises I'm full supportive of him.
I am passionate about female sport & access to fair competition (at all levels) but agree we are just going round in circles so perhaps it is better to close the thread.
We can have all the opinions we want, but none of us here gets to make the important decisions. None of us here (unless some of you lot are more eminent than you're letting on ) even gets a say in who gets to make the important decisions. And it's one of those topics where the more you read around the subject (from all angles, not just the one you want to bolster) the less you know.
I've refrained from posting, but have been following since the beginning and have an idea/request.
Is it possible to leave the issue of personal thought on who is/isn't a woman/female and who can make that determination out of the thread? In the whole thread the thing that has bothered me the most has been the suggestion that trans women are not female and I'm probably not the only one.
I may have completely missed something but don't think it's necessary to agree on or debate that issue/belief/legality in order to debate trans women in sport.
As a slight side-step I was discussing this with MrMegster, who, it’s fair to say is a bit more... errr... old fashioned at times with his views.
In fairness he is accepting of transgender (although not necessarily understanding) and during our conversation he brought up boxing. He asked whether a transgender woman - female - could compete in a female boxing match - where as I understand it aside from m/f the only other destination is weight.
I found this really uncomfortable and am prepared to be shot down over it, but the idea of it doesn’t sit comfortably with me. It should be said that boxing doesn’t sit that well with me at all. It’s not a man hitting a woman thing - I totally accept that a transgender woman is a female in all senses. But I still can’t see how this could be a fair fight.
I know it’s only hypothetical but I thought MrMegster raised an interesting point and that I’d put it out here.
I saw this on twitter today and thought it interesting and relevant to this thread, forgive me if it's been posted before as I haven't been following avidly.
It's illustrates some of the facts around Caster Semenya and indicates why this is a problem, and is clearly explained. My view is that if they are going to enforce a certain testosterone level in her then every person competing in women's sports should be subject to the same tests and rules. It goes deeper and explains why testosterone levels aren't a good measure. Which, by extension, also has implications for trans women.
