Agreed Gobi, mostly if my time is slow I am either enjoying a friendly get together celebrating someone else's run, i.e 50/100 etc or particular event for them, or it is because we are at a new to us run and start right near the back, parkrun to me is just for fun, I do recognise it means much more to others.

In response to Gobi's posts at the top of the previous page:
That is why I would be happy to compete without registering age, gender, physical or mental disability. No distinction = no discrimination.

And if parkrun enforced this thenby definition they discriminate against those of us who want to be judged and compared

You could still judge and compare yourself to others/personal rivals. There would just be an absence of a public classification

What would be the point of parkrun without timing. Me & I suspect most RDs wouldn't spend hours each week with admin/set up/take down of courses just for fun. It would the just be a run/walk in the park so why would you need a start & finisher area or marshalls?

Someone should start a parkrun thread to discuss this

I genuinely can't tell if you're being sarcastic, now.
What's the point of getting together with other people to do something fun that's also good for you if you can't turn it into a competition? Seriously?

There's been some talk about fairness, but fairness is a foreign concept in sport.
I am the son of parents who were totally unsuited to producing an athlete. At primary school I could not get half-way in the 60 yard sprint; at secondary school I mostly took well over 25 minutes to 'run' two miles.
And let's not forget that the UK's successes in the Olympics have mostly come in sports where spending lots of money is the key to victory.
