I can do press ups quite easily. Apparently it's an exercise for which not being very bendy is a genuine advantage. I also spent a lot of time during one week in 2001 embedding the movement skill in response to the instructor of a Thighs, Bums and Tums class challenging the class to do at least ONE press up the following week.

I could do about three properly when I had a PT in my early 50s. He taught me! But yep, my shoulders are very mobile and another coach (Marlon, remember him?) told me we needed to be VERY careful when we attempted pull-ups/chin ups. It's odd cos I can hang from a bar and lift my legs to a nice right angle and hold. Or at least I 'could' a year or two ago! |

Gemma (last athletics coach) said what I actually did was good form and adequate. And not to fret!

EvilPixie being 'heavier' is emphatically NOT an excuse when it comes to lifting! On the whole the heavier you are the more you can lift. Although I grant you some moves are easier with less bulk. Mountain Climbers are a good example. Perhaps push ups? Not sure!

Oh I totally get weight is not a reason for not lifting but I just thought it was the main reason why I can't for the life of me do press ups maybe it's as much technic as poor upper body then? I will make it a goal!! I never got on with box press-ups but I can do ones leaning against a sink/worksurface maybe start there and lower? |

Pix, Gemma said raised surface and going as deep as you could while holding technique was more useful than. press-ups on knees or whatever.

Press ups can take a bit of working on. Doing incline press ups is one valid way of doing this. Resting on your knees and dipping your upper body up and down isn't a movement that transfers to full press ups (I'm not commenting on whether or not it's a worthwhile activity in itself). I approached it like I approached learning to do handstands and cartwheels and backward rolls as a child. No breaking it down, just invest time and effort in trying to replicate the entire movement. |

that's good to hear as I never could see how box press-ups really worked right off to look at "good press up form" |

The stairs method is good! (As long as you don't live in an ill-advised bungalow*) Start at bottom of stairs with hands on third step up and work your way down. * My 92 year old mum-out-law swears by her three storey house for keeping her fit and active! |
