I only have very small kettlebells so use dumbbells instead.

Some of you girls are strong 💪 I can't imagine doing an 8 kg pullover 🥴 lt was definitely the exercise I found toughest.

I did think my legs felt strong on my run last night but I know that is all in my imagination 😂

My weights are adjustable but I think I would like a set of the smaller weights too. I honestly never thought I would enjoy this element of training so much and am finding it a little bit addictive.

I have small vinyl dumbells then a pair that you can add weights too but these are very cumbersome really
I also have several kettlebells
I enjoyed the 2 that I have done so far and want to get into them but my head seems to have decided that I am too exhausted and that all will be good once I finish work - I don't even seem to be able to run non stop to/from work like I was

once I finish work my running will reduce (my run commutes give me loads of weekly miles) with my goal just being to hit the 100 a month and 1200+ for the year
my initial big focus is losing weight and improving health so strength and yoga will be in there and Sharkie has my permission to shout at me if I slack :-D

I'm finding it quite addictive too.

But to the gym for me today as I need heavier leg stuff to do. I have an imbalance of muscle in my quads which I'm working on in the gym.

As my main focus is now dance I really don't want 'big' quads. But dancers need (and usually have) very strong legs and I realised its would be silly to not do Caroline's quad specific squat versions.

It was only through sprinting that I stopped hating my legs, I always felt they were too hefty. This was always in my head rather than the reality but years of cycle commuting (and the rest) in central London meant I was quite quad dominant. That disappeared fairly quickly when I started sprinting and I reckon my natural hamstring dominant body type came into its own.

But we need a balance don't we? It's fascinating how much you can alter your body - in a healthy way obvs! It takes commitment but finding that state where you feel confident in what's uniquely right for you (your long term health, lifestyle, your interests, aesthetics even - but they must be your own) can be a positive aim.

That long waffle was really in aid of saying Caroline's heels lifted squats are worth doing! There's plenty that focuses on hammies and glutes, so never fear, me!

Day two done this morning. I had jelly arms in the shower afterwards which might make my gardening plans for today interesting :-) Stuck with 3kg dumbbells all the way through, and swapped the renegade rows for some plank extensions as they were niggling my back. I was grateful for all the previous lateral raises I've done to help my swimming!

Sharkie, there was an interesting discussion about getting 'big' muscles on the Science of Sport podcast a couple of weeks ago - essentially saying it's more, lighter reps that are more likely to build bulk rather than fewer, heavier reps (and I'd put Caroline's sets into that category as it sounds like a lot of us are thinking about heavier weights). That surprised me but the guest was a sports scientist who's been researching this for a long time, and had a lot of evidence to talk through.

EvilPixie it sounds sensible to listen to your body and it looks like you will be much better able to focus on training once you have stopped working.

That is interesting about smaller, lighter reps being more likely to cause bulk CasB

Sounds interesting CasB. I know that it is actually very difficult for women to bulk up without many, many hours training and possible use of ahem 'helpers'. Older women like 71 years me even harder.

Have just realised how bonkers I have been - I've never worried about bulking up because I've always known the above. APART from worrying about getting big quads!

About This Thread

Maintained by Sharkie
Caroline Girvan - tiny but tough, sweet but strong.

Here's a thread rather in the manner of the Shred craze that swept Fetchland some years ago, or perhaps more recently (and less bossily) Adriene's 30 Days of Yoga each year. I found Caroline Girvan via geordiegirl (ta, GG!) and am well impressed with her workouts. I'm currently on Day 27 of her 30 day Iron Series and have STUCK TO IT. Wonders will never cease, I was beginning to despair of the likelihood of me getting any sort...
