I'm near the top of age group in some races but it doesn't really help much if you cannot recognise who else out of the middle-aged baldies is in the same age bracket!

Do that Manchester marathon and I'll be impressed. Or the podium 5k races locally (latest winner 14:05).

I did actually win a local half marathon a couple of years ago, much to my astonishment (and no doubt many others'). I kept thinking some youngsters were going to come steaming by after a slow start, but it didn't happen. It was a county championship race, too, which meant that my name and time ended up engraved on a cup - mine was the slowest ever winning time, and that is recorded for posterity :). Realistically, the best I can hope for these days is an age category win, and I do OK with that.

It is always nice to find that the balding middle aged man you've just outrun is actually an M50. Even better learning that the balding middle aged man ahead is an M45!

It is easier getting a good postcode ranking in a rural area, and you'd expect to know who is ahead. I've been 3 for a long time, number one in my area is the fastest man in the region (31-32 min 10k), but I have never worked out who no 2 could be.
