Yes of course even in a marathon you may be able to enjoy racing it in poor conditions but I'd wager most of the time most of us are going for times. At least with a 5k there's probably another opportunity round the corner.

Generally I do struggle to get excited as to whether I'm 10th, 13th, 20th etc, no matter what the distance, I tend to look for top x% at the end. So if someone wants to charge past me in the final 20m I don't put up a fight as there's nothing to be gained. Beating the work colleague last night was an objective though

It makes a difference if one is going for an age group placing, I would say. Hard to get that excited about one's absolute placing in something like the London Marathon, though (unless one is, e.g., Mo Farah, which I'm not).

V45 round here seems to be 80% of the top 10 finishers, and there are some seriously quick V45s so even age group placings don't help me out much!

(Maybe that's a touch of an exaggeration, but I am some way off being near the best V45 around here).

V45 is a tough age group here, too. V55 is a bit easier. You just need to work on your age a bit, larkim

I have been known to hit 88mph, but my car doesn't have a flux capacitor so sadly time travel seems out of the question for now

Jda - 5000m is my marathon, 10000m is an ultra ;-).
It's not absolute placing I'm talking about, it's relative to others. It's how I judge XC.

Funnily enough I am #1 in my postcode M45 (that's for the first three characters of the postcode). It's just that everyone else that runs local races must be from other postcodes!!
