19:44, pace went from a solid 6:05 to 6:55 depending on the direction I was running in despite being an almost pan flat course. I know I'm not firing on all cylinders but that was the hardest sub 20 I've done this year!

Good workout I’m sure lark

I had a very similar experience at a sub-30 5 mile attempt last week. Round a rowing lake so again pan flat but horribly exposed. Manged the required sub 6 m/m for the first mile and a half but then turned into the wind for an unrelenting 2000m and motivation levels flagged somewhat before finishing in around 30:45

On those tough days you just have to grin and bear it, be grateful it wasn't a marathon!

There's a series of three 5 mile races I usually do each summer on Great Yarmouth sea front. It's out and back along a north-south axis, and very often there's a wind there, and you're so exposed, there's no shelter at all. When it's strong, and directly from the north or south, it makes a massive difference to the times.

So I know how this feels. Sounds like you did well under the circumstances, larkim. I usually don't care about race placing and concentrate on trying to get a good time, but I've switched now to focusing on race placing instead when the wind is up.

I can't complain, its the first race I've done in about 18 months where the weather hasn't played ball, I've had a really good run of weather conditions, especially give I don't race very often.

As is my wont, did some strava analysis on it - the 3/4 mile section into the headwind on the last lap comes out at 6:44 pace averaging 176bpm (with 1/3 mile section of that at 6:56 pace averaging 179bpm), the final 1/2 mile section to the finish line was 6:11 pace averaging 172bpm because I backed off a bit and just made sure I stayed ahead of a work colleague.

All good fun!!

Fetch shows you pace for direction you are running in. I always find that easier when the wind is a factor.

So it does Daz, I never saw that before

Our bloody rowing lake is aligned almost perfectly SW-NE so one side is generally straight into the prevailing wind. It’s also in the Trent valley which forms a lovely natural wind tunnel to boot.

For my race last week I managed 5:46 m/m for the 35% of the race heading NE but only 6:15s for the 38% going the other way. Not sure where I lost 45 seconds then, although I don’t remember running 12 m/m for the 2% that was due south, maybe some GPS weirdness there

I'd say Jda's phrase should be modified to just "On those tough days you just have to grin and bear it". In fact trying to embrace the conditions ala Kawauchi is probably the best way forward. Easier said than done though. I'm probably only going to have one attempt at 5000 this year and I'd be annoyed if weather ruined it.

Hard when you turn up looking for a time but running the best you can in the conditions should always be satisfying. Hopefully a good run can be seen via placings.

Difficult to judge on the placings as it's not a club runners run, but 7th overall behind some of the same names as last year, and ahead of a couple of the names that beat me last year (when I ran 19:10) so the comments about running for a place run true.

The wind rose thing I've never really used on Fetch but paints a fair picture for that run. I like the Runalyze website currently, and that grabs the weather conditions for the day from DarkSky (I think) and adds that to the activity record - adds a nice extra touch to the record.
