I think 800 is the worst race for that TBH. If you're going for a time, you don't want to be adjusting pace, you need to get out hard and then maintain a gradual slowdown. There should be no midway accelerations (these are extremely costly in an 8) so you really need to trust yourself (or the pacer needs to be spot on!). Unfortunately I trusted the pacer and should have known better.

Longer distances you can make up for slight misjudgments but generally you can look at your watch if necessary early due to the relatively slower pace.

I would not have thought a GPS watch is going to be reliable enough over 100 metre distances to make this a practical proposition. I believe any GPS reading may be up to 10 metres out, so the timings may not be a lot of help.

I don't use the GPS for that, just set it to beep every x seconds, corresponding to how long an even paced run should be hitting every 100m mark - so for a 11 minute flat 3000m, that's a beep every 22s and it's simple enough to see where the 100m marks on the track - similar to what they do in track cycling where the coach moves backwards or forwards from the finish line to indicate to the rider whether they are ahead or behind schedule.

Ah, OK, larkim, makes a lot of sense. Sorry for my misunderstanding!

Won't be a sub 18 attempt, but running a post-work 5k tonight. In an ideal world I'd look for an 18:XX but it's breezy out there and I'm not sure if I can be bothered putting in that much effort!! Though I usually say that and then run eye-balls out...

I did have a rest day yesterday though ;-)

So I'm wondering how many sandbags are contained in that post ;-).

Race well.

Best of luck with it, larkim. Some days, whatever preparation you've done is confounded by weather conditions.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I'm just back from a session of 1km reps on a nice flat back road I use sometimes. After cruising downwind and slogging upwind I can sympathise with larkim. Time to find a north - south road for when it's blowing a hoolie from the west.
