I can do very impressive v sits but they're a total CHEAT using my strong hip flexors and momentum!

I am no longer a fan of sit ups, living with someone who can rant on about how bad they are for most people. It’s one of those exercises that very few people can get right, using the ‘right’ muscles, so end up putting lots of unnecessary strain or pressure on other muscles and structures - particularly the lower back.

IMO there are much better ways to train the ‘core’ including plank variations, but also compound lifts like deadlifts, or single leg variations where you need the core to help stabilise.

That would be useful Shark the Herald Angel thanks. I've struggled with the 'core' section of the body pump class I've been doing and went to improve on that.

Anyone else remember hooking your feet under something to make full sit ups feasible?

(Also not a fan of trying to jerk yourself up to 90 degrees using whatever it takes. A few inches off the ground, holding or pulsing to make it harder, is safer and sufficient.)

I remember that, Vrap. Had a little bracket thingy to attach to the bottom of a door! Definitely wouldn't do that now. My back and neck are creaking just at the thought of it!

Roll ups/downs are a nice variation of a full sit-up that can be done with much more control and much more beneficial. (A bit like the current Adriene yoga where she does a slow roll down to lying)

1001 variations on a dead bug are more useful than sit ups imho

Roll outs are my go to abs specific exercise, keeping the hip joint as still as possible.
