Oh, tell me about comedy dumbbells, my left arm just seems on a different planet sometimes.

That describes it perfectly, quimby, but, like Cath, its my right arm that's all over the place.

I'm hoping the amount of pushups I'm doing might even the balance a bit in some areas. We shall see.

The arm all over the place is why I’m working with a PT, my left shoulder is all over the place - so that lifting dumbells the left would actually end up working slightly differemt muscle groups to the right one.

Getting the range of motion back and the right bits ‘firing’ rather than the ‘wrong’ ones is taking some time - but we’re getting there

Possible well enough that I can try swimming again luck

That sounds promising, Rosehip.

I've given up on skull crushers because I don't trust my right hand to keep a good grip on the weight, now it's increased a bit, and not drop it on my head. They are not called skull crushers for nothing. I got scared 😂

I’ve recently started a basic program (Stronglifts 5x5) which returns to the basics. However we are lucky to have a recent gym at home with a barbell and heavy weights.

That's weird, GimmeMincepies - skull crushers are one where I feel my arms are more balanced than things like shoulder press. I do make sure I push the 2 dumbells together, though, on the flat sides; that keeps them more in control.

It’s not my arm, so much as my grip on the dumbbell, quimby. Since I dislocated bones in my hand, I can’t bend my little finger at all and my ring finger only partially, so I don’t feel I have a strong enough grip to cope with the increased weight now. I have visions of dropping the dumbbell onto my face 🫣

"sit ups"

some say just raise off the floor by a couple of inches others say sit up properly to knees

what's the right answer and do they actually benefit core or is it just an out of date exercise that we don't use now we have found the dreaded horrible impossible plank?

It depends on what muscles you are actually using and if you have tension anywhere you shouldn't (am ex Pilates teacher). Best to think of them as curl ups. If you engage your deep abdominals they're useful - but yes you only need to get head and shoulders NO STRAINING off the floor.

Have class in five minutes will be back later to explain more thoroughly if you like.

To quote Jillian Michaels from her 30 day shred video, when doing crunches, "your neck is not invited to this party".

And in case you're wondering about that title, well, I like alliteration and one can be too po-faced about the use of girl/lady/woman.
