I imagine gymnasts are very good at pull ups and it certainly doesn't favour the biggest strongest athlete. Power/ Strength to weight is a middle ground.

You'll see the same thing in the weight category for Olympic lifting that can lift the highest percentage of body weight I believe.

I had my first session with new PT on Thursday - I'll do the prescribed sessions and video sets to stick on the app for him to see, then our face to face sessions will focus on anything he or I think need a bit of work, going by how the previous sessions have gone.

We worked on low handle trap bar deadlifts (feel very weird, like squatting a deadlift!) and pendlay rows. I've always done rows quite strict to work the back, but he wants these to be explosive and really use the legs first of all - ended up doing 3 sets of 3 at 70kg! For rows! 😮

It felt a bit wrong and 'cheaty' quimby, but ultimately I see what he's getting at (being explosive at ripping a sandbag or atlas stone from the floor).

There's a whole new world of difficulty in lifting objects that don't have handy barbells attached. My PT pointed out I was now deadlifting her weight, but I don't fancy my chances of actually picking her up unless someone attached handles to her. 🤣

I follow someone on instagram (American PT) who was talking about warm up sets vs working sets.
This made me think that I'm doing too much lower weights and should aim to do fewer sets and reps but heavier
given I am normally short of time I'm not sure how best to approach this.

Typically I would do 3 sets
1 lighter set and 2 heavier
all of 10-15 reps
he was saying that the working sets should be 8-10 reps to near failure (so a proper rest)
would I be better doing 1 warm up set with my heavier weight then 2 sets at a higher weight but less weights?

Once I can do 10 reps I increase the weight. You can still be effective at much less reps but heavier, especially with the bigger muscle groups. But it’s also quite good to mix it up.

The group PT sessions I did were great for increasing my confidence to use heavier weights, and also free weights/barbells. Good form essential of course.
