I can't knit without a pattern. I admire greatly anyone who can design one that works. I do occasionally ad lib and adjust as I go.

Drawing is a skill, it needs to be practiced regularly if you want to improve, you need to recapture the joy of doing it without caring about the end result, like when you weee a child, it’s not or shouldn’t be about producing a perfect photo likeness of what you see. Sorry, Encouraging people to make art because it’s fun and good for you is one of my ‘things’ |

I need a pattern too, I hate having to pull knitting apart once it's done.

I struggle with learning crochet, a few years ago Silvershadow showed me how, of course I didn’t carry on and have forgotten again! I am on holiday this week so I bought hook and yarn with me to have another attempt, this afternoon is perfect weather for it, it’s chucking it down and windy, going to look on YouTube for a simple guide, unless anyone here has a suggested video?

Not sure on YouTube, I usually recommend Attic24 website but think she’s mainly photos. Just watch out for the US vs UK terminology with crochet (eg UK dc = US sc, and UK tc = UK dc. |

jelly thanks for saying that about drawing. When I retired, I kept buying bits of 'equipment', (the local art shop has frequent sales), and now have a drawer full of colouring pencils, oil pastels, watercolours, and oodles of plain paper, but have yet to psych myself up to make a mark on paper. I used to love drawing, but wasn't good enough to do art at school. And then work life took over, and I haven't yet given myself permission to just sit and draw. |

Kittenheels Kath sounds like me! I bought stuff when teaching to help with stress but gave it all away to a student!

If it had been just a few months ago I could have supplied you all with art equipment in slightly damaged packaging at bargainous prices. Tink worked in Keswick Pencil Museum for a while. She started to do some drawing herself. She's not bad, but not in "give up the day job" territory.

Even in art classes they often start with ‘mark making’, just drawing what you feel with whatever you feel. Helps you get a feel for what you’re using and start to develop a style or ideas. (my daughter is doing an art degree). There’s no right or wrong and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but you do have to start!
