Pretty much everyone has a dress code, eg London Marathon if you want to enter the proper championship. It needs to be sensible and reasonable though. You'll (potentially) have exhibitionists wearing stupid stuff otherwise.

I may have a picture of my match-day trousers somewhere....

London Marathon Championship will be about the club kit. No one cares if a chess player wears jeans.

Yes about wearing jeans, but there has to be some sort of code. There was a case of a grandmaster showing up for a game in swimming trunks a few years ago.
