Mac: I don’t mean that you can run faster by consciously lengthening your stride. More that as you gain fitness your stride gets a little longer and when you do run faster (in my case at a parkrun rather than an easy 5k) the stride is longer on average. Speed gives a longer stride, not the other way round, if that makes sense.

Congrats on your recent 2k Nellers, it takes guts to go again the day after bailing!

Interesting on the stroke length, I'm getting similar to you Nellers - 11.5 - 12m for r20, a little under 10m for r24, and looking at recent TTs I averaged 9.4m for the one minute TT but less than 8m for the 1k 🤔

When I used to run I had quite a long stride for someone who's only 5'8", looking on Garmin connect at my last decent races in 2016 my stride length was 1.48m for the marathon, 1.57m for the HM and 1.62m for 10k, with a cadence of 170. That's when I was 45, pretty sure my stride would have been longer when I was 25!

Back on the Erg after a few days in Northumberland, and I suspect I'm a heavyweight for a few days at least 🤣

My stride length on my run Tuesday was 95cm and I’m 5’10”. Cadence 184 though, on an easy run, so I guess it just different styles.

Yeah I used to have a high loping stride - probably why I no longer have knee cartilage🤣

Nice perseverance on the 2k effort Nellers.

I still haven't done mine, I tore my hamstring playing football 11 days ago and the next day I also tore my serratus anterior doing bench press! Thankfully neither muscles seem to be too involved in the rowing stroke. I've did an easy 2k Monday and a progressive 5k last night (18:42). Might have a crack tomorrow morning.

I watch quite a few of Mark Lewis' videos. He's local to me and I nearly joined that gym a couple of months back, before my current gym offered me two months free to stay on.

My gym have done a couple of rowing competitions for their weekly free PT session leaderboard. I think both times the winning effort was pretty achievable.

That's a lot of metres, Muttley!

I'll try that again:

Be careful with those injuries, Foppotee. Make sure you're not affecting them with what you're doing and making them worse.

And if you're rowing that 5k with a bit of caution because of the injuries (and even if you're not!) that's a bloody good 5k you've knocked out there. I suspect that we'll be rewriting the 2k leaderboard when you get round to testing things.

I did spot WayHand's distance on the log and had a quick peak, Muttley. His profile says he's done a sub-7 2k a couple of years back so it would be nice to see him on here to give us some pointers!

Come on, man. We need all the help we can get!

Thanks Nellers, I don't think the injuries were a limiting factor in the 5k but I started with an easy 1k then 3 steady ones before going harder on last one. I had a bit left in the tank at the end. I think the top 2 times on the leaderboard are safe but I think that 6:58.9 is possible.

Despite feeling pretty leggy on my warm up, I decided to put a 2k TT marker down this morning. Was probably a bit early for such shenanigans but as it’s my first hard effort on the tower a pb was guaranteed.

6:56.7. Went out quite hard with a 1:42:x followed by a pair 1:44:x and 1:45 exactly for the final 500.

It’s the first time I’ve noticed my legs getting tired on this contraption! Probably time to follow a training plan, now I have a benchmark to start from.
