As usual the problem is entirely from the neck up.

Slightly different plan to try to sneak up on my mental state:

I'm going to go again tomorrow by setting up the pace boat from my last successful 2k and just try to beat it by a second or so, then do it again next week, and so on every week or 2 until I explode or I can't beat it any more.

I mean, it's like they said about Kiptum and the marathon, right? If he'd just run each mile a little bit quicker he'd have gone under 2 hours, and if he can run a 2:51 kms surely he could have run 2:50s? ;-)

Well that worked wonders:

Kept the pace boat from September behind me the whole way and took 2 seconds off the season’s best.

Feel a lot more positive after that than I did yesterday (obviously!) and, once again, I feel like there was more in the tank physically. I just need to sort my head out somehow so I can use it!

In a week I've gone from doing my Monday AM session with no shirt and 2 fans to having a wooly hat and thermal on for the warm up! It's 5C out there!

I notice the relatively stable hr in that screenshot -- I'm guessing you were well revved up when you started?

Apparently I make a good heater. 3.7c by the time I’ve done 10 x 45 seconds free rate with 90 sec rests.🥵

The monitor shows the hr at the end of the split rather than the average, Muttley, so it’s not quite as even as it looks there but yes, I’d done a good warm up.

3 min @r16, 2 min @ r18, 1 min @ r20, then steady row with 5 stroke surges on each minute with the intensity of those surges increasing each minute (more or less). 17 minutes total to get things warmed up and ready to go.
