I've not bothered to look at updating the firmware since I got my machine nearly 2 years ago. I figure that it's not broken so why fix it. Or should I? |

Thanks Jef, and well done on the 8x500 improvement, looking forward to see what you can do on your next 2k although I'm sure it will wait another week if you've not been well, I've had the lurgy too this week 🙄 Re batteries I bought my current erg new in Feb 2021 and had to change the batteries in the summer, so they lasted about 2.5 years. My firmware updated via Ergdata these days. |

I didn’t realise ergdata could update firmware ? I’ll check that out.

Yep, when there's a firmware update now it comes through as an app update and flags up next time you connect to the PM5. There was one a couple of weeks back.

Thanks re the 2k TT, it is my first attempt as I am new to all this rowing lark. Nice 8 x 500 and 5k times Craggy/Jef. I'd never heard of the Pete Plan, Muttley, I looked it up and started it today. Averaged 1:42.9 for the 8 x 500 and I was thinking about 1:42/3 so happy enough with that after a week of almost no exercise, away in Wales. |

You're welcome Foppotee. I used to do the PP years ago when I was more interested in improving my times, but it's too much for me now. These days I'm into fitness paddling and turning the legs over in between runs. Incidentally, if you look under Useful Links in the box up there on the right you'll find a shedload of info and training plans. I added another one this morning, the RowAlong site. I'm about to complete week 12 of the Beginners PP, which is about as far as I can go without getting bored. It's a brilliant resource but 24 weeks is too long for me and like the full-fat PP it's designed for performance improvement. I'll likely explore RowAlong for some variety. |

I did actually watch a couple of those row along videos last week, I can't imagine actually rowing along to it in the gym though! 5 x 1,500m today, do the rest of you normally get up to speed first during the rest interval or do you start each interval from stationary? I noticed today that the average pace took quite a long time to normalise to what I was actually holding due to the slow start so for the last couple I got moving before the rest interval finished. Also having re-read the plan notes, I realised it was not a complete rest interval so I did a gentle 500m in the rest period which really helped bump up the volume in today's 5 x 1,500m, I wasn't sure about the pacing as I have not done a 5k so ended up at 1:50 pace or 1:49s with the two flying starts. I held the pace for all 5 so I think I got it about right. |

Re: rest intervals it depends what the session is as to what I do in the rests. The more intense the effort, the more likely I am to stop completely and sometimes even get off the rower and move about. Either way, though, I'm almost always rolling slowly into the start of each interval rather than starting from a dead stop. I'll usually then do 3 or 4 harder strokes to get the flywheel spinning before settling into the rate/pace/effort level for the rest of the piece. That, generally, gets the average pace down to what I want pretty quickly and doesn't usually cause a particular fatigue issue. |

I've done a few Rowalong sessions but I only actually "row along" with him if it's a complex workout with the timings. He does one, for example, which is 40 second hard efforts with 20 second rests, a couple of minutes break and repeat. Too much faff programming the PM for that. Otherwise I just do the workout with my usual soundtrack. I've got to the end of week 12 of the Beginners PP, halfway, 24 weeks is too much for me so time for a change. I'll probably go with a RowAlong plan now. Not sure which one or just do a lucky dip each day. I like his overall approach but UT1 rows seem to be missing from his repertoire, dunno why. |

@foppotee Paul's law gives a good prediction of target paces based on a known result (click on Paul's Law - right hand tab on the link below). Based on your recent 2k it predicts a pace of 1:50.61 for 5k, so your pace on the 1500m reps was spot on. It can become a little skewed depending on whether you're more power based or endurance based, for example I'm more endurance based after years of distance running, so I manage to beat the predicted paces of the 10k, HM etc but struggle to hit the paces of the sprints. machars.net |
