Gears, help, Old bike was a compact at the front 34 - 50 which I changed to a 52, the cassete from memory was a 12-31 (started life as a 12 -30) new bike then has a 52 - 36 chain set as standard but it's running the 12-31 cassette. So I guess this will mean harder climbing and promote more moving between chain rings. This is not my style as I can't stand on hills and front mech operations are fairly hazardous. I prefer to do most my shizzle on the big ring and sling it onto the wee one for sharper climbs and just spin it out. I've probably answered my own question, put the 34 on instead of the 36, but the alternate is a different cassette, what would the largest cog be on the cassette to make it the same ratio as running a 34 tooth little ring. My wils guess is 32 or 33? Anyone know? Help Thanks |

32 x 30 = 36 x 32 sheldonbrown.com I don't think you can do 52/34 up front as it's too big for the front mech. Nothing to stop you going with a 32 on the rear though to get something very close to your old lowest gear. |

This is another nifty gear calculator. If your teeth aren't in the drop downs, you can slide the sprockets about at will. gear-calculator.com |

Thanks Dvorak, will play later. 34/52 works Ok on the old bike, but I do wonder if it's a bit big?

Can you reasonably get over 52x11 Rich? I'm just wondering if the minimal difference at the other end will be noticeable on all but vertical walls if you have that much force to give.

I would suggest staying with 52/36 on the front (52/34 is a massive drop and the front dérailleur doesn't like it much, and you are much more likely to ship the chain at the most inconvenient moment with it.. And go with the 32/11 on the rear When I'm not running a standard front I tend to use 50/36 (so the change isn't so great) with a 32/11 cassette (on 11 speed shimano) and I find that the 36x32 is fine for cumbrian steeps ridden seated |

I'm exhausted. The 52 11 is a bit big even for me I'm tinking it might be better to go with a bigger 1st on the cassette and try to man up although going to a 12 might be a better idea. Wearing contacts again, sorry for spelling |
