Going back a few pages........ I have Ksryiums and they are great - some rim wear after thousands of miles but still true (kind of) which is impressive given I'm, a bit hefty. I have the ones that came with the bike "elite" - as usual for marketing they are not elite at all, they are the ones with metal spokes - the more expensive ones come with posh carbon spokes and I'm told they are not as comfy. Much as I love my Mavics one of the best bits of kit for price (I think, but then I know very little) are the Ultegra wheels wiggle.co.uk the ££:build quality:weight:reliability seems pretty good. They are 100g heavier than ksryium elites but much cheaper! If you are looking at Mavic Aksiums I'd say the Ultegras look like a good alternative - more than 100g lighter and not much more expensive if you shop around. They probably need attention from the bike shop a few thousand miles before the Mavics so I'd guess the total price of ownership is quite similar. |

Re discs - just as a bit of trivia I'm reliably informed that the Specialized disc bikes (that have different spacing to the general run of disc frames) can be fitted with "standard" disc wheels - this is contrary to a few press articles. It is necessary to change the gear hanger but I'm told they can be upgraded or built up with pretty much any wheelset on the market. I haven't tried but it comes from good source; I doubt it does your chainline any good though.

I ride my CX bike and my son's CX bike when he's not around. Everywhere. MTB's have hydraulic discs, his CX cable disks and my CX has rubbish Cx rim brakes.Road bikes have Chorus rim brakes that I never now ride. If I were in the market for a new road/Cx bike I would be thinking of hydraulic discs as the cable discs are OK but lack the feel of the hydraulics on my mtbs. Just my 2pworth |

Thanks Winded. think I'll leave the Ksyriums on the ally bike and the Ultegras on the carbon fibre then.

I'm not sure that's what I meant - I rank them: Ksryium Ultegra Aksium So assuming the Carbon bike is your best one I might put the Ksryiums on it if you have them and they are in good condition. |

Rather you than me TRO - have a good one. Maybe if you go steady you'll be the only non-crasher and last man standing

Best thing about the Ultegra is it's now easy to adjust the bearings.

Winded: interesting what you have to say about wheels above: I bought a set of Ksyrium Elites a couple of years ago and they totally transformed my Trek, truly superb wheels, however I donated them to my Wilier when I put it together last year. That left me short of a good set of wheels for the Trek, so my choice wobbled between Aksium Elites, Ultegras or Fulcrum 5s. In the end I went for the Aksiums, but actually wish I'd gone for the Ultegras, as you say they're lighter and I think the Aksiums are a bit plain. The Ultegras would have gone with the Trek groupset too!! Can't complain though, I think they'll be bombproof. A lot of cross bikes use Aksiums don't they?
