Stupid question perhaps but why, as in the discussion above, are gear ratios shown with x (which usually means multiply) and a gear range using a / (which normally means divide and would be a more logical symbol for the ratio, imo)?

Maybe it's a natural language thing, '/' can mean 'or' so might be confusing.

So, 36/34 could be taken to mean the choice of a 36 or a 34 front ring and it could also mean a 36 front and a 34 rear.

36 x 34 just means 36 front and 34 rear.

To slightly modify that: the "/" acts as an item divider in a list. The front list is pretty short (sometimes it's a "list" of one) but the rear list is (increasingly) longer eg 12/13/14 ... 23/25.

The "x" means "crossed with" as in biology notation.

Perhaps.

A logical and extremely plausible answer, Dvorak. Thanks, all.

I have discs on the crosser - which is my go-to bike for everything - and rim brakes on my lightweight road bike. I'd say the braking efficiency is similar on both, but the "feel" on the disc brake is fantastic (might tell you more about the set-up ;-) ) With that and not wearing through rims in a couple of minutes, I'm a disc convert. I'm sure you'll get a balancing view in a moment...

For a road bike Mandymoo?

I run discs on my winter trainer / commuter and they are really very good, especially in the wet. Plus as Jubear says, you don't wear through rims.

Avid and TRP are ones I know and like.

I prefer cable to hydraulic on road, other way around off road.

Yes for a new Road bike - so much choice out there. Am taking hubby to the pub for a liquid lunch before we hit the bike shop tomorrow :-)

Sounds dangerous - particularly if credit cards be involved :)
