I've donated immediately after my target event several times, but would generally advise that although there shouldn't be an acute drop in your haemoglobin post-race unless you've shed blood, if your target event was something gruelling you would do well to keep all your blood for personal use for the next couple of weeks.

I think my Hb was already on the low side, to be fair. And the event was a 24 hour relay thing.

I’d also leave donating until after target race. I take over the counter iron as I was anaemic a few years ago and banned for donating for a year. So I’ve been ok donating soon after a marathon.

I couldn’t donate after going to Malaysia, gonnae try again soon, although was in Mongolia this Summer.

Might be allowed or not, will find out soon enough. Always seem to have the sniffles anyway.

Peregrinator - for the sake of accuracy of the timing , *we* use the actual time on the machine which, I believe starts pretty much as soon as the needle is in and unclamped, and stops when the "You-are-all-done" alarm sounds.
I always ask them to tell me the time if I can't see it :)

Something only elite blood donors know about! Right, I'm going for a pb at St George's this month under International Association of Blood Donors rules

Yes, I was going to say, make sure you give yourself enough time after a big endurance event for your red blood cell count to recover. A few days after an ultra and my haemoglobin count was too low and I failed. Good work all. :-) G

I am pleased and very relieved to report that I passed the iron test and am waiting to be hooked up as we speak. Phew.

Number 53 done. Not sure if that's 53 pints as I don't know if they count the times I've been refused. Happy anyhow.
