And the sticking plaster issue can be avoided by claiming allergy to sticking plasters. I have a genuine allergy to sticking plasters and always get a little bandage instead.

I have previously felt little impact post donation. However, in September, I stupidly ran a half marathon two days after donating. Was absolutely wiped half way through. Awful. Had forgotten about the blood donation until after I finished. So this time it’s taken a few weeks to get back to normal.

Thanks Vélo and Kim, very interesting. I was a bit taken aback when I was told “up to 12 weeks” yesterday.

Knowing what you both know now, what would be your buffer between donation and target race?

I’m not stressing over it (I’ve already donated) just interested and managing my expectations.

eL Bee!
SailorSteve. Although it doesn't apply now, I'd advise delaying until after your target race as your build up will be affected.

Thanks el Bee - lesson learned👍

My next proper targets will be in two years time (my 60th year) so no harm done.

I'd donate up to six weeks out from my target race if it's a marathon and I'm training properly. As close as three weeks to shorter target races.

VR: what are the rules for blood donor events? I'd been timing from initial form to TUC biscuit, but is that like gate times? I believe that reading a newspaper while donating is banned an artificial stimulant to blood pressure?

I think individual event teams amend the rules on the fly, Peregrinator. I was surprised to be given the additional challenge of donating with eL Bee sitting beside my couch this time.

Cheers Velo - my next marathon is seven weeks away so it will be good experience for me.

Beware donating too soon after your target event. I failed my iron test....
