HappyG. I was also advised not to come back for six months due to low iron. TBF, I had run into work that day (about 7miles), but the appointment was late in the afternoon and I thought I'd be okay. The first thing she asked was if I was a runner

Yeah, I have convinced several friends to start donating over the years. And my next marathon (when I decide to do one) will be for charity. Not raising money but getting people to pledge to donate blood (and then to actually go through with it)

That is a brilliant idea, Roberto! Is it part of a campaign or all your idea?

I've never seen it in a campaign. I dont like asking for money for something I do for fun anyway, so thought it would get round that in a way that actually means something to me. But i havent run a marathon in years since i thought of doing it

I like that idea. I too am banned as a recipient (and probably also because I grew up in Africa!). Donated when I was at uni, but was advised by GP to stop because of low iron (never actually failed the test though)

Quick google and it's nothing new but not something I've ever actually seen before. This is from last year: blood.co.uk

Fizz :-)
A question about iron. When I last went to give blood, I was just on the limit, so they wouldn’t take my blood. Assuming there’s nothing actually medically wrong with me, how much ferrous sulphate should I take? (Not that I’m going to necessarily take the advice of “strangers” off the internet over the pharmacist, who said 1 200ug tablet per day, but hopefully V’rap is around . . . .) Also, how much should I expect a pharmacist to know anyway? And given that he’d just issued me with a prescription for Thyroxine, should he have told me not to take the iron within two hours of that? (I read the leaflet carefully) |
