The Highgate entry list are absolutely insane this year. You could easily be forgiven for thinking the B race is actually the european champs! I'm about mid-way seeded in the D race with about 35 runners in each so hopefully will be a sub 31 train on, can't wait but also pretty nervous!

Still on the quest. My second track 5k tonight in 18:34 ... splits 85, 89, 89, 89, 90, 90, 89, 90, 90, 91, 92, 89, 37. More of a "see where I am at" race than anything as training's been rubbish due to an injury. 18 seconds off my PB, pretty pleased.

Does anyone else find they have quite a strong kick at the end of a 5k? I'm not sure if it means I am holding too much back.

_nick, kind of depends where your kick starts, I think. A lot of people can find an extra bit of speed with 400m or so to go, and I don't think it's to do with holding too much back, it's your brain as central governor taking the brakes off because it can see the end.
Slightly disappointing 5K for me last night, 17:30 where I thought 17:15 was on the cards. But really wasn't feeling too well at the start (lingering after-effects of virus and migraine), and there was quite a headwind for the first mile, so I probably shouldn't beat myself up too much. Encouraged that I could do what felt like a bad race and still be only 12 seconds away from a PB. (Still have to run that good race, though).

Maybe a bit of a breakthrough for me last night. I’ve always struggled to get my 10k time equivalent to my 5k, with a best on the road of 38:25 and 37:58 on the track. League race, billed as “about” 10k, out and back along a disused railway so pretty damn flat apart from one new road bridge which was barely noticeable in the first mile but a bloody mountain in the last.
Ran 36:55, and while I measured it at 6.21, most other folks had around 6.15. Either way it was closer to 10k than 6 miles, or so I’m taking it as progress if not a PB. I’ve got a couple of legit 10ks in the next month, and while previously I would have wary of going off at sub-6 m/m now I feel like I can go for it.
Nick I agree with J2R, raising a gallop when you can see the finish is nothing to worry about, while being able to up the pace with say 1km to go is maybe a sign that you let things drift in the middle. Going by your splits last night that doesn't seem to be the case so well ran.

I see that you were at Charnwood last night nick. I did a mile race there at their first open meeting of the year and it’s a great set up with an indoor warm up track alongside the home straight, lovely new track and flash colour results/splits screen by the finish line. It’s a shame that their other meetings this year clash with our summer league or I would have joined you in the 5000 last night.

That's right Uyuni, it was a good night. I was in heat 1 for the slowcoaches. Heat 2 had a really strong field. The winner finished in 14:46, way out in front, but there was a proper bunch race for 2nd place which you don't often see at this level. All the top 8 were sub 16.

Nice running Uyuni, I reckon you've still got the marathon endurance in your legs and you've obviously kept your speed going by your recent PBs!
Nick, I end all races with a kick - whether it's a mile or a marathon. I think it's partly due to muscle type (I reckon I'm made up of more fast twitch than slow twitch muscle fibres) that I can't tire out too early or they become useless, but I'm sure the central governor also has something to do with it.
The key is judging the kick so you are just tying up as you cross the line, rather than sprinting through it (should've started sooner), or really dropping pace before the lane (should've started later)...that is the tough bit - Nice running btw!
