My mum used to make a date and walnut cake without the walnuts! Good job too. Walnuts = devils food. Along with sweetcorn and celery.

I read that with my distance contact lens in and thought you said walrus = devil's food.

Just catching up...
Liebfraumilch too! ...which translates as milk of the free woman. Not quite so keen to drink it...

I actually think it's milk of Our Lady (i.e. Mary) which is worse imo

I read that with my distance contact lens in and thought you said walrus = devil's food. Nah! Walrus is lovely, twice cooked like a land shank. Needs a bloody big oven, though.

I'm glad we're moving on to booze from biscuits. Biscuits are my downfall. If they didn't exist I would probably be 2 stones lighter. Or I would have invented biscuits and made my fortune.
Snowballs at Xmas: check. Just advocaat and lemonade, the former having been sat in the "drinks cabinet" (aka a side-cupboard in the sideboard) since the Xmas before and probably the Xmas before that.
Liebfraumilch: check. Horrible sweet sugary stuff that gave German / Alsace wines a bad name.
My dad's drink of choice in pubs was Light & Bitter - half a pint of keg bitter with a bottle of light ale on the side. Rotten stuff. I imagine my dad thought he was getting one over on The Man by getting more than a pint each time: beer glasses did not have pint / half measurement lines back then so the bitter was a half-pint "by eye," sweet-talk the barperson into pouring generously, add a 330ml bottle of light ale = more than a pint for the price of a pint!
My early forays into drinking were lager-shandies in the pub with my dad or the Snowballs / LFM at home. Once my mates and I started drinking in pubs it was mostly bitter - Courage Best or Directors, other brands that I have forgotten - and for some reason there was a mad brief fad for Pernod & blackcurrant. The indelible purple vomit stain from the latter was a permanent feature of my bedroom carpet for a few years...
