For Sharkie (again, off the web, so it must be true) The Pelman Institute Pelmanism is the system of scientifically training the mind credited to William Joseph Ennever. He is described in the "New Century Cyclopaedia of Names" Vol 2. as the "English journalist who originated the mnemonic training system known as Pelmanism." ennever.com I think the card game evolved early 1900s from this. |

I also learned to play bridge in the sixth form. I concurrently learned to drive, discovered girls and discos/nightclubs. For some reason I failed my A levels..... Long before that, we used to play shinty as middle school, but on tarmac so the sticks had splintered backs for the most part. They hurt! I recognise the left handed struggles referred to earlier too! Good for bi-directional games like rounders and softball, a right pain for the things where the only equipment was righ handed. By the time we got to High School I was accepted as being rubbish as all normal sports, and I could see "sporty" kids who couldn't normally count beyond 3 suddenly able to perform strategic picking 10 people before they got to the end to ensure they didn't get stuck with me in their team! (Scarred for years, I was.) |

My sister and I had a silly name of our own for pelmanism and I can't remember what it was now, just that our grandmother kept telling us the game was actually called pelmanism, not our silly name.

Yes Kim's game in Brownies and Guides, all sorts of objects on a tray. Pelmanism for cards. Talking of things we did at Brownies, did anyone else make miniature garden on the lids of biscuit tins? My sister and I used to have to take it in turns to have our mother's 'handbag mirror' (small oblong mirror) which made the 'pond'. In less Oldies Stroll Down Memory Lane news, I'm reading Older, Faster, Stronger by Margaret Webb, and by pure coincidence, so is a running friend of mine. This morning after our run we agreed that we've got the 'Older' bit nailed, now we just need to work on the Faster, Stronger bits |

Columba
I've read that, Daisy. The author's "constantly so breathlessly excited" style got a bit tedious after a time. |

Sharkie
Recommened by Bintilicious if I rightly recall. I read it and just the orther day thought I must have another look at it. The author 'is' a touch irritating, I agree with Columba. Some useful info though? |
