57.5 Degrees of Pain
The dad of one of my friends was very big into shinty. I avoided playing for the sake of my teeth.
I also played bridge at school GregP. We and the chess club were the only ones allowed to eat packed lunches inside which was a big perk in Glasgow weather. Had some good games Vs the teachers in the staff room too, though my lungs would have suffered from the thick smoky atmosphere there.

I learned the vestiges of bridge at school but didn't play for long enough to get a grip of the conventions.

Nothing like that at my school. Friends taught me how to play whist, and various other card games but not Bridge. My father taught me to play chess. He always used to win, except when he let me win because otherwise I cried, but when I got fairly well into my teens (by which time I had given up crying) I discovered I could beat him about 50% of the time provided I concentrated throughout.

We had a chess club at school where a current government minister was rather good at chess. He was a bumptious tw*t even at 13.....

The only card game we played at school was flicking football cards, from bubble gum packs, against a wall. The person whose card was closest to the wall got to keep all the cards.

The card game I really liked (because I invariably cleaned up at it) is hardly a card game at all - we called it Concentration, but I've since learned is really Pelmanism (god knows why. was it invented by Mr/s Pelman?)

Spent most of my sixth form playing bridge (plus hockey, tennis & cricket) and even got to the English (GB?) Masters points listings (although not very high up). All stopped when the 4 of us that played went to different unis. Card games generally avoided after that - not many people seemed to appreciate my card counting and asking 'why didn't you play your Q of Hearts on the 4th trick ..' (or whatever)
